To make a 24/7 YouTube livestream of original kids’ stories with FFmpeg, prepare a continuous program, create an eligible YouTube livestream, and use FFmpeg to send the media to YouTube over RTMPS. The command-line loop can repeat files, but it cannot keep a broadcast online by itself: the FFmpeg process, host, power, network, and YouTube ingest must remain available.
What you need before you start
- An adult-operated YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming for eligible channels. YouTube’s livestreaming help explains eligibility and setup.
- Original story video and audio, plus permission to broadcast every included element: music, illustrations, fonts, sound effects, and other assets. An original script does not automatically clear third-party material.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay on and connected. No particular physical product is required; a local machine and paid remote hosting are deployment choices, each with its own costs and reliability trade-offs.
- A stable internet connection with enough upstream capacity for the chosen output, and a YouTube stream key kept private.
Review the full program and playlist before going live. Check for silent gaps, abrupt transitions, broken files, and any material you do not have rights to use. YouTube says livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Choose and prepare the program
Use a single file or a playlist
A single, finished video is the simplest source. For multiple stories, prepare one continuous file or build a playlist that FFmpeg can read in sequence. The exact playlist method depends on your media formats and workflow; the example below uses one input file, which FFmpeg repeats indefinitely. If separate story files are used, test their order and transitions in the complete program before broadcasting.
Check the audience setting
In YouTube Live Control Room, set the audience designation accurately. If the stream is made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. These are platform restrictions, not a reason by themselves that a children’s story stream cannot be broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on content made for kids.

Create the YouTube livestream and get the ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream and select encoder delivery.
- Set the title, description, visibility, and audience designation for the actual content.
- In the stream settings, copy the current server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Use the exact values displayed for that broadcast; do not rely on a URL or key copied from a public example.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: do not place it in screenshots, public repositories, shared command transcripts, or other public material. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
Google documents RTMPS as YouTube’s secure RTMP ingest method: “RTMPS is a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” The protocol, valid YouTube ingest endpoint, application path, and key must all be correct; connections use port 443. Consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation for protocol details.
Start with an FFmpeg loop
This is a starting template, not a tested command for every file, FFmpeg build, or machine. Replace the input filename and the YouTube RTMPS destination with the exact values appropriate to your media and Live Control Room. Keep the real key out of shell history and logs where possible.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "stories.mp4" -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_VALID_YOUTUBE_INGEST_PATH/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-stream_loop -1 makes FFmpeg loop the input indefinitely. -re reads the file at its native frame rate, pacing file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as possible. These are input-side options, so they appear before -i. FFmpeg documents this behavior in its command-line manual; real-time pacing is useful for streaming, but should not be applied at a low rate to an actual live capture device.
The -c copy option asks FFmpeg to pass through the existing audio and video without re-encoding. It is suitable only when the source streams and container/output combination work for YouTube’s current requirements. If the source is incompatible, use explicit encoding settings instead; the right codec, mapping, output frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio layout depend on the source and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before fixing those values in a production command. Do not assume a single example bitrate or resolution fits every stream.

If the source needs re-encoding
Inspect the file first and choose video and audio encoders and settings that match the source and YouTube’s current requirements. Re-encoding consumes processing capacity; the load varies with resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, and filters. If the source already has compatible streams, stream-copying avoids that encoding work. There is no universally suitable server specification without knowing the source and chosen settings.
Keep the broadcast available
An infinite input loop only handles reaching the end of a file. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a failed host, or fix an internet outage. A genuine 24/7 operation needs plans for both the media process and the infrastructure carrying it.

Local machine or remote host
| Deployment | What you maintain | Main continuity concern | Cost and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local computer | You keep the computer, FFmpeg process, power, and network available. | Power, home internet, sleep settings, or a local failure can stop delivery. | No hosting fee is implied, but electricity and equipment are yours; media and keys remain under your direct control. |
| Remote VPS or cloud host | You maintain the FFmpeg process and server configuration; the hosting provider supplies the remote environment. | Server, provider, network, or process failures still need detection and recovery. | Hosting may incur an ongoing fee; compare that with local power and equipment costs, and consider where media and keys are stored. |
Whichever option you choose, arrange process supervision, logs and alerts, sufficient network capacity, and a clear restart or backup plan. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options to attempt recovery after temporary output failures, but this is one resilience mechanism, not an uptime guarantee. See the FFmpeg formats and muxer documentation.

Start FFmpeg and check Live Control Room for an incoming signal before making the broadcast public. Confirm that audio and video play correctly, the loop returns to the beginning, and the stream remains stable through a full cycle. Keep an eye on FFmpeg’s output and host/network monitoring after launch.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming signal | Incorrect RTMPS endpoint, application path, stream key, or port access. | Compare the destination with the current Live Control Room details, confirm the key is current, and ensure outbound connections can use port 443. |
| FFmpeg exits at the end of the story | The loop option is missing, misspelled, or placed after the input. | Use -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i input option. |
| Playback is too fast or timing is wrong | File input is not paced for real-time output. | For file-based streaming, place -re before -i. Do not use this low-rate pacing approach for a real-time capture device. |
| YouTube rejects the stream or playback has no sound/video | Source codecs, stream mapping, audio layout, or output settings may not meet current ingest requirements. | Inspect the source and compare the command with YouTube’s current encoder guidance; re-encode only when necessary. |
| The stream stops after running successfully | FFmpeg, the host, power, network, or YouTube ingest may have failed. | Check process logs and host/connectivity alerts, restart or switch to the planned backup, and investigate any temporary output error. A loop alone cannot recover every failure. |
Or let it run in the cloud
