Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS after a reboot or user sign-in, then ask OBS to start streaming. That can restore a lofi stream after some interruptions, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: launching OBS, sending a healthy encoder feed, and making the YouTube broadcast live are separate steps.
What Task Scheduler can—and cannot—restart
Task Scheduler can run OBS at system startup or user logon, and it can retry a task Windows considers failed. That is process-level recovery, not stream-health monitoring: OBS may remain open even when its connection to YouTube has stopped working.
There are three states to verify separately:
- OBS is running: Windows has launched the encoder application.
- The encoder feed is running: OBS is sending video and audio to YouTube.
- The YouTube broadcast is live: the stream is available according to the stream’s settings and Live Control Room state.
Microsoft documents startup and logon triggers, but those triggers do not establish that OBS reconnects successfully or that viewers can see a live broadcast. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings affect whether starting or stopping the encoder starts or ends the broadcast. Verify them for the particular stream in Live Control Room; reused stream settings carry these choices forward. Microsoft’s trigger documentation and YouTube’s live-stream settings describe the relevant controls.
Prepare the YouTube stream and OBS
- Enable live streaming if needed. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it has not streamed before. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Create or select the stream, set its visibility, and choose the intended Auto-start and Auto-stop behavior in Live Control Room.
- Get the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube Help says to enter the URL and key into the encoder to start streaming. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream settings and its encoder setup instructions.
- Configure OBS manually first. In OBS, configure the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and key in the stream settings. Check the scene, lofi media source, audio, and encoder settings. Start streaming manually and confirm that OBS reports an active connection and YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream. Do not automate an untested setup.
- Check the broadcast start behavior. Starting the encoder does not necessarily mean a scheduled event or broadcast is already live. Depending on stream settings, a scheduled stream may also require starting the event in Live Control Room. Confirm the intended behavior there before relying on unattended startup.
Test OBS’s start-streaming argument
An OBS forum contributor recommends appending --startstreaming to the OBS executable target so OBS begins streaming when launched. This is community advice from March 2024, not a guarantee from Microsoft or YouTube and not official current OBS documentation. Validate it with the OBS version, profile, and scene collection you actually use before creating a scheduled task. The forum discussion also describes the risk that a PC may start before network equipment after a power outage. Read the OBS forum discussion.

- Find the OBS executable used by the profile you configured. A typical installation places it under
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe, but use the actual path on your computer. - Test launching that executable with
--startstreamingafter it. For example, in a shortcut’s Target field, the form is"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. If OBS opens but does not start the intended stream, stop and resolve the profile, argument, or version issue before scheduling it. - Confirm the stream in both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. A successful application launch alone is not a successful stream.
Create the Windows Task Scheduler task
Use an At startup trigger when OBS should be launched as Windows starts. Use At log on when OBS needs the logged-in user’s interactive desktop session or profile. Microsoft’s schtasks /create supports both /sc onstart and /sc onlogon; the selected trigger changes when Windows launches OBS, not whether the YouTube ingest is ready.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task.
- On General, give the task a recognizable name, such as
OBS YouTube Lofi Stream. Choose the security option appropriate to the OBS profile and session you tested. If OBS needs the interactive user session, schedule it for that user’s logon rather than assuming a startup task will behave identically. - On Triggers, choose New and select At startup or At log on. A logon trigger waits for the selected user to sign in; a startup trigger runs in response to Windows boot.
- On Actions, choose New > Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path of the OBS executable. Put the validated
--startstreamingargument in Add arguments, not in the executable path. If your tested OBS setup needs a particular working directory, specify it in Start in. - Save the task and use Task Scheduler’s Run command to test the action. Confirm that OBS launches with the expected profile and that the feed reaches YouTube.
Microsoft also documents creating a startup task from the command line. For example, this pattern launches an executable at startup: schtasks /create /tn "OBS YouTube Lofi Stream" /sc onstart /tr ""C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming". Adjust the executable path and quoting for your installation, and verify the task’s action and result in Task Scheduler. The command schedules an application launch; it does not certify stream health. See Microsoft’s schtasks /create reference.

Set limited retries and account for late networking
In the task’s Settings tab, enable the option to restart the task if it fails, then set both a retry interval and a finite number of restart attempts. Microsoft’s restart behavior requires both values. Treat this as a limited policy for task failure; it will not restart OBS merely because the video feed has frozen or disconnected while the OBS process remains running. See Microsoft’s Task Scheduler restart settings.
Power restoration, Windows startup, user sign-in, network equipment booting, internet availability, YouTube ingest, and the stream’s broadcast settings are separate dependencies. If OBS starts before the router or network connection is ready, its first connection attempt may fail. There is no universally correct delay established for every setup. Test your actual boot sequence; if networking is consistently late, consider a delayed trigger or a separate retry or health-check mechanism. A task retry that only responds to task failure is not a substitute for a monitor that checks whether OBS is still sending a healthy feed.

Test the complete recovery path
- Reboot Windows. Check whether the configured trigger launches OBS and whether OBS uses the intended scene, media, and stream settings.
- Close OBS deliberately. Run the task again and verify the launch and encoder-start behavior. This tests the task action, not recovery from every possible stream failure.
- Test a delayed network connection. Where practical, check whether OBS connects when network equipment or internet access becomes available after Windows starts. Adjust the launch approach only after observing the behavior of your own setup.
- Verify both ends. Confirm the encoder status in OBS and the incoming preview or live state in YouTube Live Control Room. A visible OBS window or a task marked successful is not proof the broadcast is live.
- Check archive expectations separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast must be split at 12 hours or that a restart preserves the same watch page. See YouTube’s encoder help.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS opens, but streaming does not start: The command-line argument may not work as expected with your OBS version or configuration, or the task may be launching a different installation/profile. Test the exact executable and argument manually, then inspect the task action.
- OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube does not show the expected live broadcast: Check the stream URL and key, incoming preview, scheduled-event state, and Auto-start/Auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder and making the broadcast live are distinct states.
- The first connection after a power outage fails: The network may not be ready when OBS starts. Test boot order and consider a delayed trigger or separate retry mechanism rather than assuming a task-failure retry detects a failed encoder connection.
- The task is marked successful while viewers see a stalled or offline stream: Task Scheduler has established that its action ran, not that a healthy video feed continues. Use a separate stream-health monitoring or recovery method if that failure mode must be detected.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in OBS. Do not share task exports, screenshots, or scripts containing the credential.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded lofi stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube only. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
