OBS can reconnect a supported stream output after a connection drop, but that does not restart OBS when the application crashes—and looping a playlist does not guarantee that it will reopen at the same track and timestamp. For a more resilient 24/7 lofi stream, configure OBS’s reconnect setting for transient disconnects, use a looping VLC playlist, set up an operating-system-level way to relaunch OBS after a crash, and test what happens to playback and the YouTube broadcast after a restart.
First, separate the three failures
“Resume the stream” can mean several different things. Treat them as separate requirements, because the recovery for one does not automatically solve the others:
- Encoder connection drops while OBS stays open: OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting can retry an output that supports reconnecting.
- OBS exits or crashes: reconnect cannot help while the application is no longer running. An external supervisor or operating-system restart mechanism is needed to launch OBS again.
- Playlist state after OBS restarts: OBS’s VLC Video source can loop a playlist, but its documentation does not promise restoration of the previous item or playback timestamp after a process crash.
These are distinct outcomes: getting OBS back online is not the same as continuing the same YouTube broadcast, and neither proves that the playlist resumes at the exact point where it stopped.
Set up OBS to recover from a dropped connection
For a transient network or output interruption where OBS remains running, open OBS and go to Settings > Advanced > Network. Enable Automatically Reconnect, then review the retry delay and maximum retries. The exact labels or placement can vary by OBS release. OBS describes reconnect controls for outputs that support them; this feature retries the output rather than restarting a crashed OBS process. See the OBS streaming connection troubleshooting guide and OBS output reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a stable network connection where possible and avoid treating a high retry count as a crash-recovery plan. If OBS itself terminates, no in-app retry loop is running.
Build a looping lofi playlist with VLC Video
Install the matching VLC version
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the architecture: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear among available sources, confirm that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
Add and configure the playlist
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lofi stream.
- In the Sources panel, click + and select VLC Video Source. Create a new source or choose an existing one.
- In the source properties, add the media files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist for continuous rotation. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want a predictable ordered sequence.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior intentionally, then confirm that it is visible in the scene used for streaming. A playlist source that is hidden or absent from the active scene will not provide the intended video.
- Start a local or private test and watch the transition from the last playlist item back to the first.
OBS documents playlist looping and visibility behavior for this source, not checkpointing of the current item and timestamp after an application crash. Looping means the playlist cycles; it should not be interpreted as a saved playback position. See the OBS media sources guide.

Restart OBS after a process crash
To handle OBS terminating, configure an external process supervisor or an operating-system scheduled task to launch OBS again if it exits. This is an implementation approach, not a built-in OBS crash-recovery feature. Exact steps depend on the operating system and how you start your stream, so test the restart mechanism in your own environment rather than assuming a generic setting will restore the full session.
- Have the restart launch the intended OBS installation and, where your setup uses them, the correct profile and scene collection.
- Check that the streaming scene is selected, the VLC Video source is present and visible, and the output begins after OBS starts.
- Make sure the machine itself remains powered on and connected. A supervisor cannot restart software if the computer is off or unavailable.
- Do not assume that relaunching OBS restores the previous VLC playlist item or timestamp. Check the actual first item and timecode after every controlled restart.
If the precise point of continuation matters, use a playback arrangement that saves its current item and time, or add a restart workflow that persists that state and restores it. The OBS and YouTube documentation cited here does not establish a built-in VLC playlist checkpoint-and-restore option.
Check the YouTube event and stream key after restart
YouTube’s stream key is the credential and address the encoder uses to send a feed. YouTube Help describes stream keys this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Custom stream keys can be reused; YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls can start or stop a stream when enabled. Those controls help with the encoder workflow, but they do not document playlist-state recovery or guarantee that the same broadcast remains available after every crash. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

After OBS relaunches, check the relevant live control room or event to see whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and whether the intended broadcast is still in the expected state. A reusable key does not, by itself, prove that a particular live event will continue or that playback will resume at the earlier timestamp.
Compare recovery approaches by what they actually recover
| Approach | Network or output drop | OBS process crash | Same playlist item and timestamp | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Automatic Reconnect | Retries a supported output while OBS is running | No; it does not relaunch OBS | Not established | Disconnect the network while OBS remains open; check that output retries as configured |
| VLC Video playlist loop | Does not itself reconnect the output | Does not itself relaunch OBS | No crash-position restoration guarantee is documented | Confirm ordered playback, loop transition, source visibility, and playback after OBS restarts |
| External process supervisor or scheduled restart | Depends on the OBS reconnect/output setup | Can relaunch OBS if the computer and supervisor remain available and are configured correctly | Not guaranteed by relaunching OBS | Terminate OBS deliberately; check relaunch, output, YouTube event state, playlist item, and timecode |
| Playback setup that persists state | Depends on the encoder and network recovery design | Can be designed to restore saved playback state | Only if the chosen setup actually saves and restores it; verify in a crash test | Record the item and time before a controlled crash, then compare after recovery |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream | Does not depend on your OBS process staying open | Do not assume it restores an OBS playlist checkpoint; it plays uploaded videos or a playlist | Test the uploaded playlist and YouTube stream workflow you intend to use |
Run a controlled failure test before relying on the stream
Test privately or through a non-public workflow appropriate for your channel. Change one failure at a time so you can tell which mechanism is working.
- Baseline: start the stream and note the current playlist item, approximate timestamp, OBS scene, and YouTube event state.
- Connection test: interrupt the network while OBS stays open. Confirm whether Automatic Reconnect retries and whether YouTube receives the feed again.
- Crash test: terminate OBS deliberately. Confirm whether the external restart mechanism launches the expected OBS setup and whether output resumes.
- Playback check: record the first playlist item and timestamp after relaunch. Compare them with the pre-crash notes; do not infer exact resumption from the stream appearing online.
- YouTube check: inspect the event or live control room after recovery. Verify whether the feed is attached to the broadcast you intended to continue.
- Repeat: run the tests more than once, including a restart at a different playlist position, before treating the setup as dependable.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
OBS reconnects from a brief drop but does not return after a crash
Automatic Reconnect only applies while OBS is running. Add and test an external supervisor or scheduled restart, and verify the computer stays powered and connected.

VLC Video Source is missing
Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC for the source to appear.
The playlist starts at a different item or time
Looping is not a documented playback checkpoint. If exact continuation is required, use a playback arrangement that persists state or implement a workflow that saves and restores it; then test it after terminating OBS.
OBS returns but YouTube does not show the expected broadcast
Check the stream key and the YouTube event or control-room state. A reusable key and auto-start/auto-stop may help manage encoder start and stop, but YouTube does not promise that every crash will preserve the same broadcast.
