VLC must be installed, and OBS must stay open with the stream running; this setup does not automatically scan nested folders or add new files for you.
What you need to know before starting
- OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. OBS says its VLC Video source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Audio files you have permission to broadcast. OBS lists formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV in its Media Sources guide.
- A visual source for the scene, such as a still image. OBS scenes combine sources in the stream output; its Sources Guide explains how sources contribute to a scene.
- A YouTube channel with live-stream access. Check YouTube Studio for current eligibility, restrictions, and access before planning a long broadcast; current requirements and interface steps are not established here.
“24/7” is the intended schedule, not an uptime guarantee. Google’s API documentation recognizes a 24/7 broadcast use case, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted service from your computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Make one playlist from music in multiple folders
1. Gather the tracks you intend to use
Decide which files should play and in what order. The documented workflow is to add the intended files to the playlist; OBS documentation does not establish recursive folder import, automatic monitoring for new files, or separate rotation by folder. Treat the playlist as a curated list of tracks, not a live link to your folder structure.
2. Add a VLC Video source in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene for the broadcast, or create a new scene.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. Install VLC first if that source is unavailable. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Open the source’s properties and add the desired audio files from each folder to its playlist. Check the list to confirm the intended tracks are present and ordered correctly.
- Turn on Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the last playlist item.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for fixed sequence playback. Enable it if you want randomized playback instead.
OBS also has a native Media Source that can loop a single local media file. For a multi-file playlist, the documented VLC Video source is the direct fit. See OBS Media Sources.

Build the broadcast scene and connect YouTube
Give the stream a visual
Add a still image or another visual source to the OBS scene alongside the music source, and make sure it is visible in the output. The cited materials do not establish YouTube’s current acceptance of an audio-only stream, so do not assume that a blank video output will be accepted.
Send OBS output to your YouTube broadcast
Create or select a live broadcast in YouTube Studio and configure OBS to send its output to that broadcast using YouTube’s current stream setup. Interface labels can change, so follow the options displayed in your current YouTube Studio and OBS versions rather than relying on an assumed menu path. At the technical level, Google distinguishes the broadcast from the incoming audio/video feed: the broadcast is a liveBroadcast, while the feed is a liveStream. See Google’s broadcast and stream overview and LiveStreams documentation.

Your playlist is a sequence of songs, not multiple audio tracks sent to YouTube simultaneously. Google’s ingest guidance says a feed containing multiple audio streams must contain only one audio stream. Keep that distinction in mind if configuring audio in your encoder: one encoded audio stream can carry the current song as the playlist advances.
Test playback before leaving it unattended
- Play the scene in OBS and confirm the intended tracks are audible.
- Check that the visual source appears in the output and remains present as the playlist advances.
- Confirm the YouTube preview receives both audio and video before starting or scheduling an extended broadcast.
- Let the playlist reach its end, if practical, and verify that Loop Playlist returns playback to the beginning.
- Check that the track sequence behaves as intended with Shuffle Playlist on or off.
These are setup checks, not a guarantee of round-the-clock operation. A local OBS stream depends on the running computer, OBS, the files remaining available, and the network connection.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream risks
Use recordings and compositions you have permission to broadcast. Buying a track or being able to play it personally does not, on its own, establish permission to rebroadcast it. For legal questions about a particular catalog, consult the relevant rights holders or a qualified professional.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the content continues. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm channel allowlisting with the rights owner before relying on licensed tracks in a long broadcast. YouTube also distinguishes live matching from claims after a stream: if you choose to archive the broadcast, Content ID claims may be made after it ends.

Some tracks do not appear or play
Check that each intended file was added to the VLC source playlist and that its format is one OBS lists as supported, such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV. Do not assume OBS imported every nested folder; add and verify the files you want individually in the playlist.
The playlist stops at the end
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. If tracks play in an unexpected order, check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
YouTube interrupts the broadcast
Check YouTube Studio notifications and the copyright status of the content. YouTube live matching can interrupt a stream, including for licensed material when the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner. Resolve the rights or allowlisting issue rather than repeatedly restarting the same flagged content.
