The loop handles playback; it does not guarantee the broadcast will stay online. In a do-it-yourself setup, your computer, power and internet connection must keep working, and you must monitor the stream and have a recovery plan.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel is eligible to go live before building the broadcast. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Eligibility and feature availability can change, so confirm the status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room when you prepare to launch.
- Decide whether the stream should replay one compiled lesson video or cycle through individual lessons.
- Make sure you have the rights to stream and archive every lesson, image, diagram, animation, music track and other included material in the territories where it may be viewed.
- Plan who will monitor the broadcast and what you will do if OBS, the computer, power, internet or YouTube connection fails.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights. A lesson being educational, publicly available or already uploaded elsewhere does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it.
Choose how to arrange the lessons

OBS supports looping a Media Source and looping a playlist. Those options control playback, not broadcast uptime. The best format depends on how often you expect to update lessons and how you want topic changes to appear; OBS does not assess which format is more effective for teaching.

Set up a looping stream in OBS
- Prepare the lesson media. Export or collect the recordings you are authorized to use. OBS supports common video formats, including MP4. Play each file locally first to check its picture, audio, opening and ending.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create a scene for the continuous lesson stream. Add a Media Source for a single compiled video, or add the lesson files using the playlist workflow available in the Media Source controls.
- Enable the correct loop. For one long video, open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For multiple lesson files, use a playlist and enable Loop Playlist, so playback restarts after the final item. Preview the scene and check that audio tracks and transitions behave as intended.
- Set up the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Choose the encoder workflow, then enter the stream details YouTube provides into OBS. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
- Configure and preview the encoder. Use the current encoder guidance shown by YouTube for the stream you created. Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit your lesson source and the channel’s intended presentation, and use the matching current YouTube-recommended bitrate and keyframe settings rather than copying a preset from an unrelated setup. The available guidance here does not establish a single bitrate, resolution, frame rate or keyframe interval for every lesson stream.
- Test before publishing. Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the signal, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check the watch page on your channel and on a mobile device. Listen for audio problems and watch for a stable picture before making the stream public. If you use a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Keep an eye on the YouTube stream and OBS output. If the picture freezes, audio disappears, a lesson ends unexpectedly or the broadcast disconnects, identify whether playback, the encoder, the computer or the connection failed before restarting or switching to your recovery plan.
Keep the DIY stream online
With OBS running on your own computer, the broadcast depends on that computer, the encoder, power and upstream internet connection. YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom of 20%. Its Help guidance warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A wired connection may be a practical choice where available, but YouTube does not require Ethernet or say it prevents outages.
- Check that upload capacity remains available while other people and devices use the network.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping or shutting down during the broadcast, and ensure OBS remains open with the correct scene and stream selected.
- Arrange someone to monitor the channel and respond to a disconnect, encoder crash, power interruption or failed lesson file.
- Do not assume a loop means an encoder session can run indefinitely. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a guaranteed maximum broadcast duration or indefinite uptime for one encoder session.
YouTube supports encoder workflows and recommends software encoders for some use cases and professional-grade hardware encoders for higher production value. It does not prescribe one universal choice for a recorded science-lesson stream. Compare options by cost, supported YouTube ingestion protocol, reliability, monitoring and recovery options, and whether you can maintain the setup.

Protect lesson rights and understand monetization
Confirm permission for all material in both the live broadcast and any archive. This includes third-party footage, images, music and other content inside a lesson, not just the spoken instruction. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers represent and warrant that they have “all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world.” Use the copyright safety checklist to organize your checks; it is not a substitute for obtaining the rights you need.
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its policy page records a July 15, 2025 clarification and renaming of “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content,” and warns against content that appears template-produced or delivers little creative, educational or other viewer value. It also says reused material needs meaningful original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. Replaying recordings is not, by itself, a guarantee of monetization approval or disapproval: make the authorship and distinct instructional value of the lessons clear, and do not promise viewers or stakeholders that the stream will earn revenue. Eligible channels may have ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships, but YouTube does not guarantee ad delivery.
