You can run the encoder on a computer with OBS, or use a cloud service such as StreamNeo so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Test the whole setup and arrange monitoring before sharing the stream with students.
Plan the stream around students’ needs
First choose what viewers will see and hear. The format affects the material you need, whether a microphone is useful, and how much chat moderation the stream requires.
- Silent study ambience: A calm visual and quiet, rights-cleared background audio—or no music—can accompany independent study. A microphone is unnecessary if you will not speak.
- Pomodoro timer: Add readable work and break intervals. Check that the timer remains legible on a phone and does not obscure the study scene.
- Prerecorded guidance: Use recordings you made or have permission to stream. Decide whether they should repeat as part of the loop.
- Live study-with-me: Plan when you will be present, what you will say, and who will moderate chat when you are away. A microphone is useful for a speaking host, but expensive equipment is not required to start.
Keep the picture readable and unobtrusive for long sessions. Avoid promising that watching a stream will improve exam results: a stream is a study environment, not a substitute for revision or instruction.
Clear rights for every item in the loop
Use original content or get permission that covers repeated playback, livestream use, and any archive. The rights need to cover the stream’s territory and include music where applicable. Keep permission records. A song or video being available online does not mean it is cleared for a 24/7 broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder and, if the content remains, interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have a licence, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including music rights in live and archived content, on the provider. Check your channel and activate livestreaming in advance
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until exam week. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Prepare the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or schedule it for a time students can find it. Add a clear title and description, and choose the appropriate visibility and audience settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. YouTube calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Consider enabling DVR in the stream settings so students can pause and resume. Scheduling can give viewers a watch page to find and share before the stream starts.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder using the server URL and stream key. When the encoder begins sending content, YouTube creates a watch page. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview in Live Control Room before starting it. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full.
Choose how to keep the stream running
There are two broad approaches: operate an encoder yourself or use a cloud service for continuous prerecorded playback. The choice is about who has to maintain the computer and connection; neither approach removes the need to check stream health and rights notices.

YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source software and Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded video. That does not establish an uptime guarantee or rank either service’s reliability. Test your chosen setup and decide who will notice an outage, a copyright warning, or a chat problem. For current platform guidance, see YouTube’s encoder software information.
Do-it-yourself with OBS
- Install OBS from its official source and open it. Create a scene for the study stream, then add the video or other sources you intend to broadcast. Configure a playlist or playback method to repeat the material, and test that the loop actually restarts as expected.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from Live Control Room, or use the server URL and key if your encoder setup calls for them. Do not display or share the key.
- Open Settings > Output and set a stable bitrate appropriate to your available upload capacity. Under Settings > Video, choose a resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can sustain.
- In Settings > Output, use H.264, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval where those controls are available. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use it when your encoder offers it.
- Start sending the stream from OBS. In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream-health messages. Start the scheduled broadcast there after the preview appears.
- Watch the stream from a separate device or browser, check the audio and picture, and confirm the video continues through a full loop. Assign someone to monitor continuity and notices during the broadcast.
OBS labels and available controls can vary by version. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is the reference for its current connection and setup flow.

Set a bitrate that the connection can sustain
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include the following figures for these specific resolution and frame-rate combinations. They are platform recommendations, not guarantees of quality on your connection.

A mostly static study scene does not automatically need the highest resolution. Choose settings that remain stable on your actual connection, and test at the time and location you expect to stream. Leave enough upload capacity for normal fluctuations rather than treating your advertised maximum as guaranteed capacity. YouTube recommends testing representative video and audio before going live, monitoring stream health, using constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, and preferring RTMPS. Schedule and label it clearly
Schedule the stream when possible so students can find its watch page ahead of time. State whether it is silent ambience, a timer, or a hosted session, and make the intended audience and schedule easy to understand. For board season, do not treat “Indian board exams” as one shared timetable: dates differ by board, class, subject, and year. Check the current official date sheet for the intended board and cohort before putting dates in the title or description. CBSE’s 2026 examinations were scheduled to begin on 17 February 2026, a past date that should not be reused as a future-season schedule; that date does not apply to other boards.
Set expectations for chat and continuity
- Decide who checks chat, removes inappropriate posts, and responds to practical questions. If nobody can moderate continuously, say when chat is monitored.
- Assign someone to check stream health and copyright notices. A live stream should not be treated as unattended merely because the video is prerecorded.
- Tell viewers what to do if the stream drops, such as returning to the channel’s scheduled watch page. Do not promise uninterrupted service unless you can substantiate it.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Livestreaming is not available: Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube server URL and that the stream key matches the stream you created. Keep the key private while checking it.
- Stream health reports instability: Reduce bitrate or output resolution, check the actual upload connection, and test again. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for an unstable network.
- Video or audio stops when the loop reaches its end: Test a complete playback cycle before launch, verify the playlist or repeat setting, and confirm audio is not accidentally muted or routed to the wrong source.
- Stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Remove the matched material and use only content you own or have permission to broadcast. If licensed content is matched, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a licence does not itself guarantee the system will recognize it.
- The scheduled stream does not start: Check the preview in Live Control Room and start the broadcast there after the encoder feed arrives. Verify that the event is scheduled for the intended time and visibility.
- The stream runs beyond 12 hours: YouTube’s automatic archive handling applies to streams under 12 hours. Plan separately for longer sessions if you need a complete recording.
Costs and exam-season timing
OBS is listed by YouTube as free software, but a computer and a connection that can run continuously are still part of a self-hosted setup. Cloud options shift the continuous playback work away from your home computer; compare their current plan terms directly, because YouTube’s listing of a service does not establish its price or reliability.
