Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can configure Windows to launch OBS after a restart and ask it to start streaming, but that does not guarantee the church’s YouTube broadcast will resume for viewers. Schedule or prepare the correct event in YouTube Studio, set its encoder auto-start behavior deliberately, and rehearse the full recovery path—including checking that the event is actually live.
What automatic recovery can—and cannot—do
The practical do-it-yourself setup is Windows startup plus OBS’s --startstreaming option. If the intended YouTube event is configured for encoder auto-start, OBS sending video may also start the viewer-facing broadcast. These are separate states: OBS opening or reporting that it is streaming is not proof that viewers can watch the correct event.
YouTube’s help documents scheduled streams, stream keys, and encoder auto-start and auto-stop. It does not promise that a PC reboot will resume the same broadcast automatically. Treat this setup as an attempt to relaunch and reconnect, not a guarantee of seamless continuation, the same URL, or recovery from every power or network failure.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast
Schedule or select the correct event
- In YouTube Studio, schedule the church service broadcast or prepare the relevant stream. A scheduled stream can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can choose “Notify me.”
- Confirm which event the encoder is meant to use. A stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed; treat the key like a password and do not publish or share it unnecessarily.
- Choose the event’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” With auto-start enabled, starting the encoder can make the scheduled event live; without it, a separate go-live action may be needed.
If you create a new event using YouTube Studio’s “Reuse settings,” YouTube says those selections are copied to the new stream. Check the settings for the event you will actually use rather than assuming every broadcast is configured identically. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Set OBS to start streaming after Windows starts
Use a Startup-folder shortcut
- Locate the OBS shortcut or executable used by the church PC.
- Open the shortcut’s properties and append
--startstreamingafter the executable in the Target field. Preserve the existing executable path and any existing arguments; place a space before the new option. - Put the configured shortcut in the Windows Startup folder for the account that should run OBS. A community-documented alternative is to use Task Scheduler to start OBS at sign-in or system startup.
- Restart the PC as a test. Confirm OBS launches and attempts to stream, then verify in YouTube Studio that the intended event—not merely an encoder connection—is live to viewers.
The --startstreaming startup recipe comes from OBS community guidance, not an official guarantee that every OBS and YouTube configuration will recover unattended. For scheduled streams, OBS’s guide explains that YouTube auto-start determines whether starting OBS streaming also makes the event live for viewers. See OBS: Streaming with XSplit Broadcaster for the scheduled-stream behavior described in the guide.
Account for network startup timing
A PC can launch OBS before its router or internet connection is ready. If OBS makes its first connection attempt too early, automatic reconnect may not be enough. A delayed or connectivity-aware scheduled task may help, but there is no universal delay established here; the appropriate approach depends on the church’s PC and network. Test it on that actual setup rather than choosing an arbitrary wait time.

Reduce the chance of an update restart during worship
- Set Windows active hours to cover setup, the service, and teardown. Active hours reduce automatic restarts during the hours the device is used; they do not replace installing updates.
- Install updates and perform planned restarts outside that window, then verify the stream setup before the next service.
- Windows may try to restart when the device is not in use, and you can schedule a restart. Microsoft’s guidance also makes clear that a restart is needed to finish installing an update: “To finish installing an update, your device will need to restart.”
- Do not rely on pausing updates indefinitely. Pauses are temporary, and updates eventually need to be installed.
Microsoft documents additional controls through Group Policy, MDM, and some registry policies for managed Windows environments. Several restart policies are marked legacy or inapplicable to Windows 11, so check the documented operating-system applicability before using an older policy recipe. See Microsoft: Manage device restarts after updates and Microsoft: Windows Update FAQ.
Rehearse the full recovery, including the volunteer handoff
- Use the church’s real PC, YouTube account, scheduled-event workflow, network, audio devices, and video sources.
- Perform a planned restart and let the configured startup method run. Check whether OBS opens, whether it connects, and whether it is sending the intended audio and video.
- In YouTube Studio, verify that the correct event is live to viewers. Do not infer viewer-facing success from OBS alone.
- Write down the manual recovery steps for a volunteer: where to check the event, how to start the encoder, and whom to contact if the broadcast does not go live. The official YouTube guidance does not assure that a reboot resumes the same broadcast, and user reports differ on what happens after a stopped or disconnected stream.
Common failure points and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts, but OBS does not open. | The shortcut or scheduled task is not configured for the account or startup trigger being used. | Check the Startup-folder shortcut or Task Scheduler trigger and test after a restart under the church’s normal sign-in conditions. |
| OBS opens, but does not connect to YouTube. | The internet connection may not be ready when OBS launches, or the connection attempt may have failed. | Check network readiness and OBS’s connection status. Test a delayed or connectivity-aware launch on the actual network if needed. |
| OBS is sending data, but the event is not live to viewers. | The event’s auto-start setting may be off, or the broadcast may require a separate go-live action. | Check the selected event and its auto-start setting in YouTube Studio; confirm viewer-facing live status. |
| The wrong event is live, or no expected event appears. | The encoder may be connected to a different prepared event or stream key. | Verify the intended event and its stream configuration before the service. Keep the stream key private. |
| The stream stopped during a restart and does not continue as expected. | YouTube does not guarantee automatic resumption of the same broadcast after a reboot; behavior can depend on the event state and configuration. | Check the event in YouTube Studio and use the church’s rehearsed manual recovery path rather than assuming the old broadcast will resume. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to avoid depending on the church PC restarting and reconnecting, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the church; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start a free day.
