Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo make a commercial video, decide who it is for, what it should persuade them to do, and where it will appear; then script, shoot, edit, and review it for that placement. The strongest process starts with a clear offer and one main message—not an expensive camera. This guide walks through the full workflow, from brief to release, including YouTube-oriented production notes and the advertising checks that matter.
1. Write a brief before you film
A one-page brief keeps the production focused and gives everyone a shared definition of a finished video. Record:
- Audience: Who should recognize themselves in the video? Be specific about their need, interest, or situation.
- Objective and offer: What should the commercial communicate or promote?
- Main message: What is the one idea viewers should remember?
- Viewer action: What should they do next—visit a page, learn more, or take another concrete step?
- Placement: Where will the video run, and in what formats or aspect ratios?
- Required elements: List brand assets, legal language, permissions, and any product details that must appear.
- Success measure: Choose a measure that fits this campaign and placement. There is no universal metric or budget that suits every commercial.
Decide the destination early: it affects framing, pacing, graphics, and export settings. If the video will appear in multiple placements, plan those versions rather than assuming one crop will work everywhere.
2. Develop the concept and script
Build around one benefit
Shape a short, easy-to-follow story around a benefit the intended audience can understand. Open with a striking image, a relevant problem, a question, or a demonstration. Make the product or service clear, weave in the brand naturally, and finish with one specific call to action.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the opening earn attention
For YouTube ads, Google’s production guide recommends considering two or more shots in the first five seconds. Treat this as a creative suggestion for that platform, not a guaranteed performance formula. The same guide prints the figure that 95% of YouTube videos have sound on; the publication year is not stated in the accessed guide, and the figure is not independently validated here. In practice, make the story understandable with sound, while ensuring that key visuals and text still make sense to viewers who watch muted.
Substantiate objective claims before scripting them
Do not build an objective promise into the script unless you have a reasonable basis for it before the ad runs. The FTC explains that the evidence needed depends on the claim; health and safety claims generally call for competent and reliable scientific evidence. See the FTC’s advertising FAQ for small businesses. These are U.S. materials; obligations can differ by jurisdiction and product type.
3. Plan the shoot
Turn the script into a shot list and schedule. Planning saves time on set and makes it less likely that the edit will be missing a product close-up, clean line delivery, or usable ending.

Prepare people, place, and permissions
- Confirm talent, location access, filming permissions, props, and wardrobe.
- Decide whether dialogue, voiceover, natural sound, or a combination will carry the message.
- Check that the background, wardrobe, and props contrast enough for the subject and product to read clearly.
- Plan lighting so faces, product details, and any essential on-screen text are visible.
- Identify any backup for a location, key prop, or time-sensitive setup.
List the shots the edit needs
Include the core action, product or service in use, brand references, close-ups, and B-roll that can cover edits. Plan a clean take of the key message and call to action, plus alternate takes where time allows. Google’s guide recommends tight product and talent shots, early audio, good lighting, and extra footage for alternate cuts. These are production recommendations, not promises of ad performance.

4. Capture usable picture and sound
Record the main story beats first, then gather the details that will make the edit work. Check focus, exposure, framing, and legibility on set—especially for a small phone screen. Keep important faces and text where they will survive the crops needed for the intended placement.
- Film the product or service being used, not only static shots of it.
- Capture close-ups, B-roll, brand details, and any demonstration needed to understand the offer.
- Record the call to action clearly, with alternate delivery if practical.
- Capture clean dialogue or voiceover and useful natural sound; listen for noise before moving on.
- Review critical takes while the set is still available, so missing coverage can be recorded.
A video camera is central to filming, but the right equipment depends on the brief. Lighting and audio equipment may matter more than buying a particular camera model; no single model, crew size, or budget is necessary for every commercial.

5. Edit for the destination
Choose one clear narrative, remove confusing or redundant material, and make sure the story delivers what the opening promises. Balance dialogue and music so speech remains understandable, use readable titles, and end on the next step named in the brief.
Make and check the required versions
Export for the placements actually in scope. Google’s YouTube-oriented guide says 16:9, vertical, and square video are possible, and recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. It lists example bitrates of 35–45 Mbps for 4K 30 SDR and 8 Mbps for 1080p 30 SDR. These are recommendations in that guide, not universal settings for every platform or delivery situation; check the current requirements for the planned placement before export.
Keep critical text and faces within safe areas, and inspect each crop rather than relying on an automatic reframing. Review the rough cut on a mobile device or in Google Ads Preview, as the guide suggests. Confirm that the opening, offer, brand, and CTA are still clear at the size and aspect ratio viewers will see.

6. Review claims, endorsements, and disclosures
Watch and read the complete finished ad as a viewer would. Review spoken claims, text, visuals, demonstrations, testimonials, and what the edit leaves out. The FTC says advertising claims must be truthful and substantiated, and that advertisers should have a reasonable basis for objective claims before running an ad. Its guidance is U.S.-specific; rules may vary by jurisdiction, industry, and product. For specialized or high-risk claims, obtain qualified review before release. See the FTC’s advertising and marketing guidance.
Endorsements and paid promotion
If a video includes an endorsement or paid promotion, make any necessary disclosure clear and understandable. The FTC’s Disclosures 101 says an endorsement disclosure should appear in the video itself, not only in its description. Viewers may miss an audio-only or visual-only notice, so using both can improve notice. The disclosure should be close to the claim it qualifies and presented so viewers can see and understand it.
YouTube also provides a paid-promotion declaration workflow for paid placements, endorsements, sponsorships, and other commercial relationships. Use the applicable setting described in YouTube’s paid-promotion help. A platform label may not meet every legal disclosure obligation; requirements depend on context and jurisdiction.

7. Publish, check, and learn
Publish the version prepared for the selected placement. Verify the destination, links, and call to action, then assess the campaign against the goal in the brief. If comparing alternate openings or CTAs, change a manageable number of elements and interpret the outcome in light of the audience and placement. Google’s guide recommends capturing varied close-ups to enable creative A/B testing on YouTube, but it does not establish a universal test duration or performance benchmark.
