For other languages, more control, or a caption workflow independent of speech recognition, configure embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or send captions through compatible software using YouTube’s caption-ingestion workflow. Test captions in the live stream, then caption the saved video separately: live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends.
Choose a live-caption method that fits your stream
YouTube documents two routes for captions during a live stream: automatic speech recognition for eligible streams, and captions supplied by an encoder or compatible caption software. The right choice depends on channel eligibility, language, latency, the caption workflow you can operate continuously, and how you will caption the archive.

For either route, confirm captions in an actual viewer session. A setting shown in Studio is not proof that captions are appearing correctly to viewers.
Set up YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s documented automatic live-caption path is for English and normal-latency streams, and the feature may not be enabled for every channel. Configure it for the individual stream rather than assuming a channel-wide toggle applies.

- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Start the stream and check from a viewer session that captions appear and are synchronized with the speech.
Automatic captions are not human-verified transcripts. YouTube identifies mispronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages as possible causes of recognition problems. For a podcast, use clear speech, reduce cross-talk and distracting background audio, and pay particular attention to names and specialist terms when reviewing the archive captions.
Supply captions from an encoder or caption software
If automatic captions are unavailable or do not suit the show, YouTube documents embedded captions and a separate HTTP ingestion workflow. You need compatible caption output or software; check current compatibility, language support, service terms, and availability with the relevant provider before relying on it for an always-on broadcast.

Embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio and turn on Closed captions.
- Select Embedded 608/708 as the caption source.
- Configure the encoder to provide EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, either from a supported file format or in real time.
- Test the output in the live stream. YouTube says it currently supports one caption track for embedded 608/708.
Send captions over HTTP
- Enable closed captions for the event in YouTube’s live workflow.
- Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Enter that URL in compatible caption software or your caption provider’s workflow, following its instructions.
- Test that captions reach the live stream and remain synchronized. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed.
YouTube’s live-caption requirements guidance lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as examples. These are examples named by YouTube, not endorsements or guarantees of suitability for a continuous stream. Confirm current versions, compatibility, language support, availability, and provider terms directly. The guidance for the described HTTP event workflow recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay; account for that delay in the show’s timing and viewer experience.
Keep captions meaningful and accessible
Captions should convey more than a sequence of recognized words. W3C guidance says captions identify speakers and significant non-speech audio as well as dialogue. For a podcast, that may mean identifying which host is speaking and representing meaningful laughter, music, or other audio cues. A speech-recognition transcript alone may omit these details.

W3C WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.4, Captions (Live), is Level AA and states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” W3C’s prerecorded-caption guidance also identifies omitted dialogue or important sound effects as a failure example. Whether a legal obligation applies depends on the publisher, jurisdiction, and context; these standards do not determine that question by themselves. Caption the saved video after the live stream
Live and archive captions are separate jobs. YouTube says live automatic captions will not remain on the video after the stream ends; it generates a new caption track for the video later, and that track may differ from the live captions.

- After each broadcast segment or recording is available, open it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the generated caption track rather than assuming the live captions carried over.
- Correct errors, add captions manually, or upload a caption file as needed.
- Review speaker identification and meaningful non-speech audio as well as spoken words.

Troubleshoot common caption problems
No automatic-caption option appears
The feature may not be available to the channel, or the stream may not meet the documented language and latency conditions. Check the stream’s latency and language settings, then confirm current availability in YouTube Studio. If the option remains unavailable, use a compatible supplied-caption workflow.
Captions are missing, inaccurate, or out of sync
For automatic captions, check that they are enabled on the individual stream and that the language is English. Improve speech clarity, reduce background noise and overlapping speech, and verify the result in a viewer session. For supplied captions, check encoder output or the caption software’s connection to the correct stream entry point and ingestion URL, then test synchronization.
Captions stop after a stream reconnects
YouTube’s guidance does not promise that caption continuity survives every restart in an always-on setup. Check whether the encoder re-establishes embedded captions or whether the caption software reconnects to the active stream entry point. Test the exact restart and recovery behavior before relying on it for an uninterrupted program.
The archive has no captions or different captions
That can be expected: live automatic captions do not remain on the finished video, and YouTube generates a separate VOD caption track that may differ. Open the recording in Studio, wait for its caption track, then review, edit, upload, or manually add captions as needed.
