You can broadcast recorded church services as a continuous or scheduled YouTube Live stream by sending each recording through an encoder connected to YouTube Studio. Set the output to 1920 × 1080, choose a bitrate that matches the codec and frame rate, test the full audio-and-video chain, and monitor stream health while live. For dependable replays, plan broadcasts to end before 12 hours and keep local copies.
Choose how the stream will run
“Continuous” can mean one long broadcast or a series of scheduled broadcasts. A computer running encoder software can feed recorded services to YouTube; a dedicated hardware encoder is another option if unattended scheduling matters. You do not need to buy hardware to use the general workflow below.
- Computer encoder: Load the recording as a media source and send it to YouTube Live. The computer and its internet connection must remain available for the broadcast.
- Dedicated hardware: YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and says its optional PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Check current availability and compatibility before purchasing.
- Cloud playback: StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping uploaded videos running on YouTube from the cloud; its setup is covered below.
Set 1080p encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain them.
| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
For a typical recorded service, 30 fps is a sensible starting point unless the source footage or production calls for 60 fps. Match the frame rate to the recording where practical. YouTube’s encoder settings page recommends CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS ingest, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. For stereo audio, its listed setting is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use 1920 × 1080 output and select a bitrate your upload connection can maintain steadily. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health; choosing a higher number than the connection can sustain can lead to unstable delivery.
Create and connect the YouTube Live broadcast
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule the stream, then set its title, privacy, and other event details intentionally.
- Connect the encoder: If the encoder offers YouTube sign-in or a YouTube destination, follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it unnecessarily, or show it on screen.
- Load the service recording: Add the file as the encoder’s media source. Configure 1920 × 1080 resolution and the chosen frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview: Start sending the feed, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Go live and monitor: For a scheduled event workflow, start the event from Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Watch stream health and respond to warnings such as low bitrate, missing audio, or insufficient video ingestion. YouTube describes stream diagnostics in its LiveStreams API documentation.
Test the recording before viewers arrive
Test a representative section, not only a still frame or silent opening. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check:

- The upload connection sustains the selected bitrate and Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming feed.
- The stream’s privacy and event details are correct for the intended audience.
Keep an independent local copy if retaining a complete recording matters. A YouTube replay should not be your only archive.
Plan around YouTube’s replay and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a reliable replay is important for recurring all-day programming, divide it into planned broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and preserve the source files locally. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup.

DVR lets viewers pause and resume during a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams; viewers cannot seek back to before the stream began. Consider this when deciding whether one long rolling broadcast serves your congregation better than separate scheduled services. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Confirm music and recording rights
Church services may include songs, readings, or other material owned by someone else. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights holder. If the stream is archived, a Content ID claim may also be made after it ends.

Before broadcasting, confirm that the church’s permissions cover both livestreaming and any archived replay, and check whether a rights holder requires channel allowlisting. The applicable permissions depend on the material and circumstances; this is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. See YouTube’s copyright guidance and livestream terms.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Low-bitrate or unstable stream warning | The connection cannot consistently carry the selected bitrate, or the encoder output is fluctuating. | Check upload capacity and encoder output; reduce bitrate if needed, then test again before the broadcast. |
| Missing audio | The wrong audio source or output format is selected, or the recording has no usable audio track. | Check the media source’s audio track, encoder audio routing, and the Live Control Room preview. |
| Insufficient video ingestion | The encoder is not delivering enough video data or its feed has stalled. | Check the encoder is running, the media is playing, and the connection and stream health are stable. |
| No incoming feed | The encoder is stopped or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. | Confirm the destination settings in the encoder against the current Live Control Room details; keep the stream key private. |
| Broadcast interrupted after music begins | A third-party content match or rights restriction may be affecting the stream. | Review YouTube’s notice and confirm livestream and replay rights, including any allowlisting requirement, with the rights holder. |
| Expected replay is unavailable | The broadcast exceeded 12 hours or an archive was otherwise not captured. | Use planned broadcasts shorter than 12 hours when relying on automatic archiving, and retain local recordings. |
