To make a custom Roblox head, create the model in a 3D program such as Blender or Maya, import it into Roblox Studio, and configure it with Avatar Setup. A simple head for a character in your own game may only need suitable geometry; a dynamic avatar head also needs facial features and a rig for expressions. The right workflow depends on where you plan to use it.
Choose what kind of Roblox head you’re making
“A head in Roblox” can mean a part of a character in an experience, a custom avatar head, or a dynamic head that moves with facial expressions. These goals have different requirements. If you intend to publish an avatar asset, Roblox’s Avatar Setup documentation distinguishes between the Platform Avatar preset, which has stricter requirements, and the Development Avatar preset, which is less restrictive. Neither preset guarantees that an asset will be accepted for Marketplace publication.
| Goal | What to make | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Head for a character in your experience | Head geometry suited to that character and game | A full dynamic-head workflow may not be necessary. |
| Custom avatar head | A head model configured for the intended Avatar Setup preset | Meet the applicable technical requirements before attempting to publish. |
| Dynamic avatar head | Head geometry, facial features, and a rig for facial movement | Test expressions and any accessories that should move with the face. |
Make the model and decide whether it needs facial animation
Roblox’s dynamic-head tutorial describes creating or modifying a model in a third-party program such as Blender or Maya, then exporting it to Studio. The workflow assumes familiarity with modeling, UV mapping, rigging, animation, and character setup in your 3D program.
For a simple character head
Build the head shape your in-game character needs. If it does not need animated expressions, you may not need the facial rig and features required for a dynamic head. Whether it can function as an avatar-ready character depends on Roblox’s character specifications and the setup you choose.

For a dynamic head
Plan the face as an animated asset, not just a sculpt. Roblox’s guide calls out distinct facial components, including eyes, upper and lower teeth, and a tongue. If the mouth should open, separate the lip vertices so they can move. The head also needs an internal rig to drive facial deformations, as well as an outer cage for the face and layered accessories.
Import the head into Studio and configure it
Roblox’s 3D Importer documentation says the Importer can bring models made in tools such as Blender or Maya into Studio, including models with textures, rigging, skinning, and animation data. Review any warnings and errors rather than assuming a successful import means the asset is fully configured.

- Gold Series Roblox Neverland Lagoon: Crown Collector
- Export your model from your 3D program in a format supported by Studio.
- In Roblox Studio, open the Importer and import the model. Check the reported warnings and errors, and fix issues in the source model when needed.
- Open Avatar Setup and use the preset appropriate to your goal. Inspect the model and complete the available configuration steps.
- For a dynamic head, inspect the face and animation behavior. Roblox’s dynamic-head testing guide describes using the generated
FaceControlsinstance to pose or animate the face.
Check the head, expressions, and accessories
Use Avatar Setup’s available inspection tools to check the face, accessories, and animation behavior. For a dynamic head, test poses that open and close the mouth and move facial features; look for geometry that breaks or moves incorrectly. If you attach hair, eyebrows, glasses, or facial hair, check that each accessory stays aligned and deforms appropriately when the face moves. Roblox explains that accessories for animatable heads should be designed to deform with expressions in its face accessories documentation.
If you are making a character body as well as a head, Roblox says Avatar Setup can partition a supported single-mesh character body into the 15 body parts required for an avatar character body. That does not remove the need to meet the relevant character specifications; see Roblox’s character specifications.

What to do if the setup does not work
- Importer reports warnings or errors: Review the messages and correct problems in the model or its export settings before continuing.
- The face does not animate: Confirm that the head includes the geometry and rig required for facial movement, then use Avatar Setup and inspect the generated
FaceControls. - An accessory shifts or clips during expressions: Adjust its fit and deformation behavior in the 3D model, then reimport and test again.
- You are building a game character, not a Marketplace asset: You may not need the full dynamic-head setup. If you do want an avatar-ready character, check the applicable character specifications and Avatar Setup preset.
