If your radio stream sounds steady at its source but changes level in YouTube, first check YouTube’s playback settings before altering your station’s processing. YouTube can apply viewer-side audio enhancements, including Stable volume, and they are not available on every video. If the level also shifts in your station feed, measure and correct the signal upstream: integrated loudness, loudness range and true peak describe different aspects of consistency.
First find where the volume change happens
Compare the station’s signal with what you hear in YouTube at matched listening levels. Monitor the station output before and after its processing or encoder, then compare that output with YouTube playback. If the change is present in the station output, investigate the source material and processing chain. If it appears only in YouTube, inspect player and channel enhancement settings before changing the station’s sound.
YouTube says audio enhancements may include automatic volume-level and sound-mix adjustments, Stable volume to reduce differences between quiet and loud sections, and Voice boost to reduce background sound and highlight speech. These enhancements are not applied to every video. Channel owners can manage whether enhancements apply to future uploads in YouTube Studio; that setting does not affect ads or videos already uploaded, and viewer accessibility settings may take precedence in some cases. YouTube’s audio enhancements help page describes their availability and controls.
Check the viewer’s player settings
Stable volume is on by default for videos where the feature is available, according to YouTube Help. It is not available for every video and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos. Viewers can toggle it in the player settings. Voice boost is also unavailable for some videos; when it is on, Stable volume turns off. Compare the same passage with the relevant settings enabled and disabled where the controls are available.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the channel setting separately
If you have channel access, review the audio-enhancement setting in YouTube Studio as well as the player’s controls. Changing the channel setting concerns future uploads; it does not change ads or videos already uploaded. Do not assume that a level difference heard in a viewer’s player proves that your encoder output or source level changed.
What to measure in the station signal
Use a loudness meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak. Integrated loudness helps describe the overall programme level; loudness range helps show how much the programme varies; true peak helps identify peaks that may be missed by ordinary sample-peak readings. These measurements answer different questions, so a peak reading alone cannot establish that a whole programme sounds consistently loud.

The European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128, version 5.0 (November 2023), recommends an average programme loudness of -23 LUFS and use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is an EBU broadcast recommendation, not a universal YouTube target. EBU’s TECH 3401, version 2.0 (November 2023) addresses adopting loudness normalization and level control across radio production and distribution workflows, including metering, FM, internet streaming, DAB and media players.
Streaming and broadcast delivery should not automatically be forced to one target. The EBU’s R 128 Supplement 2, version 3 (November 2023) describes a loudness-based levelling approach for streaming and notes that streaming platforms typically use a higher target loudness level than broadcast loudness standards. The cited YouTube guidance does not provide a universal numeric mastering target for YouTube playback.

Choose file normalization or live correction
For recorded programmes
Where the programme is assembled from files, measure and align those files and their transitions before transmission. Check voice, music, jingles, adverts and other programme elements as a sequence, not just as isolated peaks. File-based correction lets you inspect the material before it goes live; preserve deliberate changes in loudness and dynamics rather than flattening every contrast.
For a live feed
When file-based normalization is not available, real-time loudness correction can reduce level drift. The Audio Engineering Society’s guidance on loudness normalization and level control describes real-time hardware and software as options for live content. Because a live processor cannot predict upcoming programme material, it may override an intentional loudness change. AES gives a typical analysis period of 30 seconds to two minutes as a balance between controlling average loudness and preserving natural dynamics; longer integration times tend to sound more natural and produce fewer audible artifacts.

If the processor applies gain, use appropriate peak limiting after that gain and verify the output with a true-peak meter. An audio compressor or limiter can be part of real-time level control, but it does not replace loudness measurement or careful setup. No particular model is established as suitable for every station.
A practical setup and listening check
- Measure the full programme. Read integrated loudness and true peak, and keep loudness range in view when preserving dynamics matters. Use EBU R 128 as a broadcast reference where appropriate to your station and market, not as a YouTube-specific target.
- Locate the point of change. Compare the source, the signal after station processing or encoding, and YouTube playback at matched listening levels. If only the player differs, check Stable volume, Voice boost and the channel enhancement setting before changing upstream processing.
- Align upstream elements. Check levels across voice, music, jingles, adverts and transitions. For a live feed, apply correction conservatively so that an intentional change in programme dynamics is not mistaken for an error.
- Control peaks after gain. Set suitable peak control in the signal chain and verify the result with a true-peak meter.
- Listen in context. Compare representative speech, music and transitions at matched playback volume. Check that correction has not caused pumping or removed contrast that the programme is meant to have.
Troubleshooting volume changes
| What you hear | Likely place to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The level changes in the station output as well as YouTube. | Source files, transitions, live mixing and station processing. | Measure integrated loudness and true peak through the chain; align inconsistent elements and use live correction cautiously. |
| The station output is steady, but YouTube playback sounds different. | YouTube player settings and channel audio-enhancement controls. | Check Stable volume and Voice boost where available, and review the channel enhancement setting if you have access. Do not treat playback-side changes as proof that the station output changed. |
| Voice changes relative to background sound. | Voice boost availability and state. | Check whether Voice boost is active. When it is on, Stable volume turns off. |
| Correction makes the programme pump or sound unnaturally flat. | Real-time correction strength and analysis period. | Reduce aggressive correction and reassess the analysis period. Longer integration times generally sound more natural, though they respond less quickly to changes. |
| Average loudness is controlled, but peaks remain a concern. | Peak control after any applied gain. | Use appropriate limiting and verify true peak separately; average loudness and peak safety are distinct measures. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the radio programme is made from uploaded recordings and you want a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
