For a simple starter build, connect two repeaters in a loop with redstone dust, then start the loop with a brief pulse. The exact behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock, so treat the placement and timing below as a basic design rather than a guaranteed recipe for every version.
How a repeater clock works
In a repeater clock, a signal travels around a closed path of repeaters and redstone dust. Each repeater sends power forward and adds a delay. That delay makes the signal arrive in pulses instead of remaining a single continuous input. The output can power a lamp or another redstone component.
Repeaters are directional: each transmits toward the front, and Microsoft’s Bedrock guide says a repeater powers the dust or component directly in front of it. Check the guide’s Guide to Redstone for its Bedrock-specific explanation of repeater behavior.
The same guide, labeled for Minecraft Bedrock stable and last updated September 19, 2023, describes game time as 20 ticks per second and redstone signals as 10 ticks per second. Those figures are Bedrock documentation context, not a promise that every clock design has identical timing in Java and Bedrock.

What you need
Gather materials in the game; no real-world purchase is needed. The exact quantity depends on the layout and the edition’s available crafting rules. The cited crafting reference lists these ingredients:
- Repeater: redstone torches, redstone dust, and stone.
- Comparator: redstone torches, Nether quartz, and stone. A comparator is not required for the basic repeater loop, but is used in some hopper clocks.
- Redstone dust: to connect the repeaters and carry the signal through the loop.
See the community-maintained redstone crafting reference for the listed recipes; its page notes a last edit of October 17, 2024.

Build a basic repeater loop
This top-down sketch shows the signal path, not a version-specific block-by-block blueprint. Repeater arrows show the direction power travels; dust joins the path between them.

Connect the path so the output returns to the input side.
Arrange the repeaters so each points toward the next part of the loop, then connect their ends with dust to form a closed path. The essential check is that every repeater faces along the route rather than away from it. A lamp beside a powered section is a convenient, harmless way to observe whether the circuit is cycling.

Start the circuit with a brief pulse
A repeater loop needs an initial signal to begin cycling. The startup pulse must be brief: if the input stays on too long, repeaters can remain powered and the loop may stop behaving as intended. The Minecraft Wiki’s community-maintained clock reference describes a one-tick starting pulse for its simplest repeater clock and warns that a longer pulse can leave repeaters powered. Its startup methods are design notes, not a guarantee for every edition or version.
Because exact starter placement can be version-sensitive, avoid treating a torch or lever arrangement as universal. Apply a momentary pulse appropriate to your edition, then check that the signal begins moving around the loop rather than holding the repeaters on. If it locks on, break and rebuild the loop before trying again with a shorter pulse.

Set the clock’s pace
Increase or decrease the repeater delay to change how quickly the signal travels around the loop. The more delay in the path, the slower the cycle; a shorter delay produces faster pulses. Choose a pace for the component you are powering instead of assuming one cadence suits every machine. The Bedrock guide explains repeater delay and how repeater settings affect a pulse, but its timing descriptions should not be generalized across editions without checking the version you play.
Troubleshoot a repeater clock
- No signal moves: Check that each repeater points toward the next section and that dust or components actually connect the path into a loop.
- The loop stays powered: The startup input may have lasted too long. Break and rebuild the circuit, then use a shorter pulse.
- The output behaves differently from an example: Verify whether the instructions match Java or Bedrock and your game version; do not assume all clock designs share the same timing.
- The machine is too fast or too slow: Adjust repeater delay and observe the output again. The desired pace depends on what the circuit controls.
When a hopper clock is a better fit
For a slower or adjustable timer, consider a hopper clock. In a common looped design, items move between hoppers and a comparator detects the items to provide an output; changing the hopper arrangement or item count changes the cycle. Another design delays output by alternately emptying hoppers. The community-maintained hopper tutorial describes these approaches and notes that hopper clocks use more iron than a basic repeater circuit. Their exact behavior and build details depend on the design and edition.
