To make a thumbnail from a video, save a clear still frame, optionally crop or design it, then upload it in the platform’s thumbnail controls. For YouTube, choose a sharp frame that represents the video, match the image to the destination—16:9 for standard videos or 9:16 for Shorts—and check the current upload limits before exporting.
1. Choose and save a frame
Open the video in an editor or player that lets you inspect individual frames. Scrub to a moment that is sharp and immediately conveys the subject. A representative frame is a better starting point than one that misleads viewers about what the video contains.
Save the still at the highest useful resolution available from the source. If you use Adobe Premiere, open the clip or sequence, move the playhead to the frame you want, and choose Export Frame in the Source or Program Monitor. Set a filename, image format, and destination, then select OK. The Export Frame icon is not shown by default; add it through Button Editor if needed. Adobe also describes using Export mode for high-quality still formats such as DPX, TIFF, TRG, and PNG. See Adobe’s Premiere instructions, updated January 21, 2026.
If you are using another editor, look for a command such as “Export frame,” “Save frame,” or “Snapshot.” The goal is a still-image file, not a screenshot of the player interface.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Optional: crop or add design
You can upload the extracted frame as-is. For a more intentional layout, open it in an image editor and crop to the destination ratio; adjust brightness or contrast if needed, and add a short headline only if it remains legible at small display sizes. Canva’s documented workflow lets you upload a video snapshot, add text or design elements, adjust the image, and download a JPEG or PNG. This is an optional finishing step, not a requirement for extracting the frame: Canva’s thumbnail maker.
3. Upload the image to YouTube
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content, then open the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select your image. You can also choose one of YouTube’s suggested options when available.
- Save the change and allow time for it to appear.
YouTube requires a verified account to upload custom thumbnails. Shorts have separate controls and availability can vary by account and rollout; check the controls shown for your own video rather than assuming every account has the same upload option. YouTube Help says Shorts custom thumbnail uploads are available through YouTube Studio on a computer and require account verification. A July 24, 2026 YouTube announcement described expanded custom-thumbnail options for YouTube Partner Program creators, three suggested Shorts frames on desktop, and the ability to pick a frame in the YouTube app on mobile. It also said full custom uploads would expand to more creators over time. See YouTube Help and the YouTube Team’s July 24, 2026 update.

4. Match the image to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends the following dimensions and aspect ratios. Its listed file-size limits differ by device, so export to the limit for the device you will use to upload.
| Destination | Recommended dimensions | Aspect ratio | Minimum or file-size guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | Minimum width 640 pixels; maximum 2 MB for mobile uploads or 50 MB for desktop uploads |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Minimum height 640 pixels; maximum 2 MB for mobile uploads or 50 MB for desktop uploads |
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as supported image formats. Consult YouTube’s thumbnail guidance for current requirements. Canva’s own FAQ gives different guidance—1280 × 720, minimum width 640 pixels, 16:9, and a 2 MB maximum—so use YouTube’s current instructions for YouTube upload compliance, particularly when device limits matter.

Check the crop before uploading
For vertical videos, YouTube warns that a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. The YouTube Data API documentation also explains that when an uploaded custom thumbnail does not match required dimensions, YouTube resizes it without changing its aspect ratio, which can leave black bars. Check the crop and proportions yourself rather than relying on resizing: YouTube Data API thumbnail documentation, updated June 1, 2026 UTC.
5. Keep the thumbnail accurate and compliant
Choose an image that reflects the video and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube Help identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as reasons a thumbnail may be rejected and a strike issued. If a thumbnail is rejected, review the policy and replace the image rather than repeatedly uploading the same one. The applicable rules are listed in YouTube Help.

A thumbnail can make the topic clearer, but no frame, font, or design formula guarantees more clicks. Treat it as an accurate preview, not a promise of performance.

- Already editing in Premiere: Export the selected frame directly, then upload it. This avoids an extra extraction tool.
- Need text or layout adjustments: Use an image editor such as Canva after saving the frame. The design tool is for finishing; YouTube’s own requirements determine upload fit.
- Posting a Short: Start with a vertical 9:16 image and check which thumbnail controls are available in your Studio or mobile app, since Shorts options are changing.
