This can resume a configured YouTube stream, but it is not a complete recovery system: OBS may try before the internet is ready, and starting OBS does not guarantee that YouTube has made a scheduled broadcast public.
What this setup can—and cannot—recover
OBS Project documents --startstreaming as a way to “Automatically start streaming.” It starts streaming from the OBS configuration that opens; it does not wait for Windows, your router, or your internet connection to become ready. OBS also has an automatic reconnect option for a lost connection after OBS has started. The documentation does not promise that this setting will recover a failed first connection attempt.
- Can help with: launching OBS and initiating the configured stream after Windows restarts, and reconnecting after some connection drops once OBS is running.
- Does not establish: detection and repair of a crashed OBS process, frozen camera, dead router, unavailable internet service, or YouTube-side problem.
These are separate jobs: Windows must launch OBS, OBS must reach YouTube, and the YouTube broadcast must be in the intended live mode. Test all three rather than assuming that one setting covers the entire chain.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before automating startup
1. Check the intended YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, select or create the encoder stream you want OBS to send to. Review its stream settings and keep its stream URL and stream key available for OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: it is the credential the encoder uses to send a feed that YouTube will accept. Check the stream’s live controls in Studio, including auto-start and auto-stop. Those controls let the encoder start or stop streaming, but do not assume that every scheduled broadcast becomes publicly live as soon as OBS sends data. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions include waiting for the Live Control Room preview and clicking Go live. Confirm whether your particular stream is meant to start automatically or still requires that Studio action.
2. Confirm the OBS configuration
In OBS, verify the YouTube service or server URL, stream key, profile, and scene collection you intend to use. Open Settings → Advanced and review the automatic reconnect setting. OBS’s overview guide covers stream configuration and reconnect options: OBS Studio Quickstart.

Make sure the intended scene is usable without manual intervention—for example, that any media source is configured to play as expected and that no startup prompt blocks OBS. The launch parameter starts the configured setup; it does not select a different profile or fix an incomplete scene.
Make Windows launch OBS and start streaming
- Find the OBS executable. Locate
obs64.exein your OBS installation folder. The exact folder can vary by installation. - Add the launch parameter. Create or edit a shortcut or automated Windows launch for OBS so the executable path is followed by
--startstreaming. The parameter tells OBS to begin streaming when it launches. OBS documents the parameter on its Launch Parameters page. - Set the working directory. For an automated launch, set the working directory to the folder that contains
obs64.exe. OBS specifically calls out this requirement for automated Windows launches; omitting it can make a launch behave differently than expected. - Arrange the Windows startup trigger. Use the Windows mechanism you prefer to launch that configured shortcut or executable after a restart. If you use a scheduled launch, configure its trigger and timing to suit your setup. The exact Task Scheduler dialog steps and labels vary and are not established here; the essential OBS settings are the executable, the
--startstreamingargument, and the working directory.
The parameter initiates a stream attempt immediately when OBS opens. It is not an “wait until online” option. If a PC starts before its router or internet service, OBS may attempt to connect too soon. Consider a delayed launch or a retry mechanism that checks connectivity, but treat that as an additional Windows-side configuration to validate—not a feature provided by the OBS parameter itself. Test a full restart before relying on it
- Save the OBS configuration and confirm YouTube Studio is showing the intended stream.
- Restart Windows under controlled conditions and allow the configured startup action to run.
- Confirm OBS opens with the correct profile and scene collection, then check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming stream and preview.
- Verify whether YouTube requires you to click Go live for this stream. Do not treat an incoming encoder feed as proof that the public broadcast is live.
- Repeat a test with the network unavailable when OBS launches, if you need recovery after router or internet delays. Check whether OBS reconnects later; if it does not, adjust startup timing or add a tested retry mechanism.
OBS recommends testing settings before streaming, and YouTube’s encoder setup depends on confirming the feed in Live Control Room. A restart test is more useful than merely checking that OBS appears in the startup list.
Troubleshoot when OBS opens but YouTube does not resume
- OBS does not open: Check the executable path and the Windows startup action. For automated launches, confirm that the working directory points to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - OBS opens but does not start streaming: Confirm that
--startstreamingis attached to the OBS launch, and that OBS has the intended profile, stream service/server URL, and stream key. - The first connection fails after a reboot: The router or internet connection may not have been ready when OBS launched. A one-time launch parameter does not wait for connectivity; try a delayed launch or a retry mechanism and test it under the same conditions.
- OBS says it is streaming, but Studio has no healthy feed: Check the encoder output and errors in OBS, confirm the selected YouTube stream and key, and test outbound internet connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder software, output health, and connectivity: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
- The preview appears but viewers cannot see the broadcast: Check the stream’s YouTube Studio workflow. A scheduled stream may still require you to wait for the preview and select Go live; encoder transmission and public broadcast status are not always the same step.
- The stream drops after it was running: Review OBS’s automatic reconnect setting under Settings → Advanced, along with encoder errors and network stability. Reconnect is not a guarantee against every failure or a substitute for restarting a crashed OBS process.
YouTube also recommends updating third-party encoder software, checking encoder errors or CPU load, and testing outbound connectivity when a stream is not working.

Power interruptions and the limits of a PC-based setup
A UPS for the PC and network equipment may help keep them powered through a brief interruption, but it does not restore an internet-service outage, configure OBS, or guarantee that streaming resumes correctly after a reboot. Choose capacity for your actual connected load and needs; no particular runtime or size is established here.
