YouTube cannot restart OBS after it crashes. Recovery needs two separate pieces: YouTube must be configured to accept the encoder when it reconnects, and something on the computer must relaunch OBS. Then you must verify that OBS reconnects with the right scene, audio, and stream key. YouTube’s Auto-start setting handles the first part—not the second.
What happens when OBS crashes?
OBS is the encoder sending audio and video to YouTube. If its process exits, the feed stops. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can let the broadcast begin when an encoder starts sending again, but it does not watch your computer or reopen OBS. You need a separate host-side restart mechanism or a person to relaunch the encoder.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key connects the encoder to your broadcast, so keep it private. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains stream keys and the Auto-start and Auto-stop controls; its encoder setup instructions explain entering the key and server URL.
Set YouTube up to accept the returning encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the intended stream configuration or event.
- Copy the stream key and server URL shown for that stream, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube uses the key to identify and accept the encoder feed. If you use a reusable key, make sure it is the one assigned to this workflow.
- Enable Auto-start if you want YouTube to begin when OBS sends video. Auto-stop controls whether the broadcast stops when streaming ends from the encoder. These settings govern YouTube’s response to encoder signals; they do not restart an OBS process.
- If the key is reset, replace it in OBS. A stale key can prevent the restarted encoder from connecting. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also advises replacing the encoder’s key if a third-party encoder reports a startup error.
Configure OBS to relaunch separately
Use an appropriate host-side supervisor, operating-system task or service, or an operator to reopen OBS when its process exits. The exact setup depends on whether the machine runs Windows, macOS, or Linux and on the installed OBS version; the YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a universal OBS watchdog recipe, so do not assume one setting works across systems.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A process restart alone is not enough. OBS must reopen the intended profile and scene, have access to the video and audio sources, and connect to YouTube with valid credentials. If OBS launches into a different scene, loses a media file, or cannot reach the network, the process may be running while the broadcast remains unusable.
Test the whole recovery path before relying on it
- Run a controlled test stream. Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast if appropriate for your channel. Check the preview and confirm the expected image and sound.
- Check the connection and stream health. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream health. Its live-streaming tips also describe testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
- Simulate an OBS failure in a safe window. Deliberately stop or terminate OBS, then verify that the host-side mechanism reopens it. This forced-restart sequence is a practical test recommendation, not a YouTube-documented OBS watchdog procedure.
- Verify the return in both places. Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing watch page. Confirm that video and audio return, that YouTube receives the new signal, and that no manual confirmation is needed for your intended setup.
- Test event endings separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish what happens in every case for a longer, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so test your event lifecycle and archive expectations rather than assuming one event continues indefinitely.
Protect the stream from network interruptions
OBS can be healthy while a weak or interrupted internet connection breaks its feed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond the bitrate used for the stream and notes that connectivity interruptions can disrupt streaming. This headroom can help with network variation; it cannot recover OBS when the process has stopped. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
- OBS did not reopen: The host-side relaunch mechanism may not be configured for process exits, may require an operator, or may be failing. Check the operating system and supervisor logs; YouTube cannot relaunch OBS.
- OBS reopened, but YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS has the right server URL and stream key, that the connection is available, and that the selected scene includes working sources. If the key was reset, update it in OBS.
- YouTube receives a signal, but the broadcast does not start as intended: Review Auto-start and the selected Live Control Room stream or event. Auto-start changes YouTube’s response to an incoming encoder signal; it does not guarantee OBS launched correctly.
- The preview returns without usable sound or picture: Inspect the active OBS scene and its audio and video sources. A successful process launch does not prove those sources are present or functioning.
- The stream drops again despite OBS running: Check network stability and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% headroom over the streaming bitrate.
- The event or archive behaves differently than expected: Review the event’s lifecycle and test it separately. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not settle every 24/7 event case.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your bhajan stream uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or microphone, a cloud service is a different option from restarting OBS on a home computer. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
