Before you set up the loop
Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its guidance also states that livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable livestreaming well ahead of your planned start. Requirements and Studio controls can change; check your channel’s current eligibility in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance explains eligibility.
Confirm you have the necessary rights
Use videos and audio you created or have permission to livestream and archive. A video being viewable on YouTube does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights, including relevant music rights, and to follow Community Guidelines and applicable rules. Read YouTube’s livestream terms before using other creators’ material.
Choose the right OBS source
For one video: Media Source
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene where you want the loop.
- In the Sources box, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local video file, then enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm the video and its audio play as expected. OBS documents this source and its loop setting in Media Sources (documentation dated January 11, 2022).
For several videos: VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear.
- In OBS, select + in Sources and add VLC Video.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check that playback moves through the files in the intended order and repeats.
Use Media Source for a single file; use VLC Video when you want a series of local files to play in sequence. OBS’s source documentation describes both options and the VLC requirement: OBS Media Sources.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service, or use the custom server option if needed, and enter the URL and key in their respective fields.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube treats it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
- For a scheduled stream, start streaming from OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview. When prompted in Studio, select Go Live.
YouTube’s encoder guide describes the stream key as the information that connects the encoder to the stream. Do not share it or publish a screenshot that reveals it.
Set stream quality and test before announcing
Use stable encoder settings
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate according to your upload capacity and a speed test rather than selecting the highest quality automatically. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and bitrate guidance are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check the stream from both creator and viewer sides
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for picture, motion, and audio before going public.
- Check stream health and resolve warnings before sending viewers to the stream.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and confirm it loads and plays; check playback on a phone as well.
- Listen for suitable audio levels and verify that the loop transitions as intended.

Plan stream boundaries and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise of uninterrupted operation for an indefinite broadcast, nor a guarantee that a longer stream will be archived in the same way. For a long-running study channel, plan deliberate stream boundaries and check current Studio behavior if you rely on a replay. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending the stream and the under-12-hour archive guidance: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
