Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To stream several local videos on YouTube as one live broadcast, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: install VLC, add your files to its playlist, choose the playback order and looping behavior, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Test the preview and audio before going live. OBS documents playlist playback, but not automatic importing of every file in a folder or automatic ending of the YouTube broadcast when the playlist finishes.
Before you set up the stream
- Check live-stream access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Confirm your rights. Make sure you have permission to stream both the video and audio in every file. Having a local copy does not by itself establish livestream rights; YouTube also expects streams to follow its platform rules.
- Keep the computer and connection available. With this OBS method, your computer runs the playlist and sends it to YouTube. The setup therefore depends on the computer and internet connection remaining stable for the broadcast.
Set up a folder’s videos as an OBS playlist
Install VLC and add the playlist source
- Install VLC media player. OBS’s VLC Video source guide says VLC is needed on Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so OBS can use it.
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the videos. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. If that source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Open the source’s playlist controls and add the local video files you want to broadcast. Add them in the order you want them to play. The documented workflow is to add files to the playlist; do not assume OBS will automatically import every file from a folder.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized order rather than the playlist order. The labels or layout may vary by OBS/VLC version.
OBS’s VLC Video Source guide documents playlist playback and these controls. It does not establish that finishing a playlist automatically ends a YouTube broadcast.
Check the picture and sound in OBS
- Make sure the VLC source is visible in the scene preview and is not covered by another source.
- Play a representative file and check that its audio reaches the OBS mixer. If it does not, check the source and audio routing before connecting to YouTube.
- If files differ in dimensions, orientation, or audio level, inspect more than the first item. A playlist can expose problems that a single-file test will not.
Create a YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or schedule one. Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted visibility based on who should be able to find or view it.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, video, or public chat.
- In OBS streaming settings, select a YouTube service preset if one is available, or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the expected video and audio arrive before starting a scheduled public broadcast; for a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
Test the full path and monitor the stream
Test the complete setup before the real broadcast: playlist playback, audio, OBS output, YouTube preview, and stream health. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total bitrate. That margin is a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s streaming tips and stream health guidance.
- Check that the first video begins as expected and that audio is present.
- If you are testing a long playlist, check a transition between files as well as playback from the first item.
- Leave the computer and internet connection running for the full broadcast. Keep an eye on Live Control Room for warnings or a missing preview.
End the broadcast deliberately
When you want the stream to finish, stop the encoder in OBS and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as appropriate. Do not rely on the playlist ending to stop YouTube Live: the documented OBS source guide explains loop and shuffle controls, but does not document automatic broadcast termination. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its encoder setup page for the current operational details.

Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not available as an OBS source | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the Sources menu again. |
| The playlist plays on the computer, but YouTube has no preview | OBS is not connected with the correct server URL and stream key, or the encoder has not started. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room into OBS, start streaming, and wait for the preview. Keep the key private. |
| Video arrives but audio does not | The source’s audio is not reaching OBS’s output mix, or the file itself has no expected audio. | Test playback in OBS, inspect the audio mixer and routing, and verify the file’s audio before going live. |
| The broadcast stops or becomes unstable | The computer or upload connection may not be sustaining the encoder output. | Check YouTube stream health and connection stability. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over total bitrate. |
| The stream keeps going after the last video | Playlist completion is not documented as a command to end YouTube Live. | Stop OBS streaming and end the broadcast in Live Control Room when you want it to finish. |
