Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a video in OBS without playback simply ending on a blank output, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the file, enable Loop, and keep the source visible in the scene you stream. Before going live, watch the OBS preview through the end-to-start transition, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. This setup makes the file repeat; it cannot guarantee that every computer, file, or YouTube playback condition will be free of black frames.
Set up a single video to loop in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will be sent to YouTube. Add the video as a Media Source and select the local file in its properties.
- Enable Loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS describes this option as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes. The separate Restart playback when source becomes active setting restarts playback when the source becomes visible; it does not make the file loop. See OBS Media Sources.
- Make the source visible and frame it. Check that the source is enabled in the scene and fits the canvas. A hidden source, the wrong scene, or an unsuitable transform can make the preview look blank even if the file is set to loop.
- Check playback before streaming. Watch the OBS preview long enough to see the file reach its end and begin again. Confirm that the picture moves and that any intended audio is present. This is a practical check, not a guarantee against every possible transition problem.
OBS also documents Show nothing when playback ends; that option can hide a source once it completes, so it is not a substitute for enabling Loop.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For multiple videos, add an OBS VLC Video source, build the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. This source requires VLC to be installed. It is a different setup from a single-file Media Source; check the playlist and its transitions in OBS before sending the output to YouTube. OBS documents both source types and their properties in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube and verify the live output
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion and recommends matching encoder settings to the available upload connection. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup guide.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the YouTube preview and confirm it shows the moving video rather than a blank frame.
- When the preview is correct, start the live event in Live Control Room if required by the selected stream setup. During the broadcast, monitor stream health, audio and video, and check the public watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring before and during an event; see its live-stream tips.
- To end the broadcast, follow the Live Control Room controls and stop sending content from OBS. YouTube’s encoder guide says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
For encoder guidance on quality settings, consult YouTube’s encoder settings. Use settings appropriate for your upload connection and test them before going live; do not assume a particular bitrate or resolution is right for every connection.

Find where the black screen appears
Check the same output in sequence: OBS preview, YouTube Live Control Room preview, then the public watch page. Where the image disappears helps narrow down the problem. YouTube’s help guidance recommends checking the preview and stream health, but does not establish one universal cause or fix for every blank output.
OBS preview is blank
- Confirm that the selected file is the intended video and that the Media Source is visible in the active scene.
- Check the source’s fit or transform and playback position. Confirm the file has video and, if needed, audio.
- Verify Loop is enabled. If the source is set to show nothing when playback ends, disable that behavior if you want the source to remain visible; it does not itself repeat the file.
- For a playlist source, confirm VLC is installed and the expected playlist items are present.
OBS preview works, but YouTube preview is blank
- Verify OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream and that the server URL and current stream key are correct.
- Check the encoder connection and YouTube stream health. If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its guidance says copying the current stream key into the encoder may be necessary.
- Review YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and reconnect only after confirming the correct stream details.
YouTube preview works, but viewers see a blank screen
- Confirm the intended scene and video are still being sent from OBS.
- Check the public watch page and a mobile device, and monitor audio, video, and stream health while live.
- If the issue persists, use YouTube’s stream diagnostics rather than assuming the loop setting is the cause; the official help pages do not promise uninterrupted playback in every viewing condition.
Plan around long-stream limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If an archive or rewind matters, do not assume a stream exceeding that duration will provide it; check the current DVR guidance and encoder setup information.
