YouTube Studio schedules and manages the live event; OBS (or another encoder) creates the program viewers see. YouTube’s event scheduler does not rotate your encoder’s scenes.
How scene rotation works
Think of the broadcast as two connected jobs. YouTube Studio creates and manages the event, while an encoder such as OBS composes and sends the video and audio feed. In OBS, a scene is a prepared layout assembled from sources—such as a camera, a captured application window, an image, or text. Make one scene for the product demo and another for the customer tutorial, then switch the active scene during the show.
For a demo scene, make the product or demonstration area prominent. For a tutorial, prioritize the instruction viewers need to follow, such as the relevant software window or a clear view of the process. Add a presenter camera or labels only when they help explain the segment.
Set up the scenes and switching in OBS
- Create the demo scene. In OBS, add a scene and give it a recognizable name, such as “Product demo.” Add the relevant source: for a software demo, capture the specific application window or display; for a physical product, add a camera source. Include images or text only if they clarify what is being shown.
- Create the tutorial scene. Add a second scene, such as “Customer tutorial,” and include the tutorial screen, presenter camera, and any useful graphics. Check that the important on-screen instructions are easy to read at the stream’s output size.
- Choose a transition. Use a Cut for an immediate change or a Fade for a gradual one. OBS offers scene transitions; a straightforward choice is usually easiest for viewers to follow.
- Choose how to change scenes. During a host-led show, click the next scene in OBS or assign scene-specific hotkeys and use them when the segment is ready. If you want to check the next layout before viewers see it, enable Studio Mode: it lets you prepare a scene in preview and then send it live.
- Rehearse the whole change. Test the scene sequence with the actual windows, camera, graphics, and sound you plan to use. Confirm that the captured window is the right one and that switching scenes does not leave viewers looking at an unintended screen.
Schedule and connect the YouTube event
- Confirm eligibility. YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio before setting a date.
- Schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to schedule the event. The upcoming event page can be shared, and viewers can set reminders.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if that integration is available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it is the credential used to let the encoder send a feed to your event. Do not show it in a screen capture or share it publicly.
- Start early and check the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and verify the video, audio, and scene changes before going live.
- Start and monitor the event. When the preview is ready, start the event from Live Control Room. During the broadcast, watch for audio or video quality problems. YouTube also recommends checking that viewers can reach the event from the channel and watch pages and on mobile devices.
- End the event. End the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Manual changes or timed rotation?
| Approach | Fits best when | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual scene changes | Demo length may change, viewers may ask questions, or the host needs to respond to what is happening. | An attentive operator must click the next scene or use its hotkey at the right moment. OBS documents scene controls, hotkeys, transitions, and Studio Mode. |
| Automated switching | Segments follow a repeatable, fixed-duration sequence. | The official YouTube and OBS guides cited here do not establish a native YouTube Studio timer for rotating encoder scenes. Treat any plug-in or external automation as a separate tool, verify its current compatibility, and rehearse a recovery plan before relying on it live. |
Do not confuse scheduling the YouTube event with scheduling scene changes: the event scheduler makes the broadcast page available, but the encoder controls the outgoing program feed.

Audio and equipment that may help
Scene rotation is a software and production workflow; buying a microphone or camera does not add scene switching. YouTube lists microphones, webcams, and headphones as typical equipment for casual streams, while more advanced setups can use multiple microphones and cameras, mixers, or hardware encoders. A USB microphone is an optional choice if the host needs a dedicated narration input, not a requirement for rotating scenes. No particular camera, capture card, lighting kit, controller, or hardware encoder is necessary just to switch between these two layouts.
Before you go live
- Both scenes show the intended sources, and captured windows do not expose private information.
- Hotkeys or scene controls work as expected, and the chosen transition looks right in the live preview.
- Speech and demonstration audio are audible, and scene changes do not unexpectedly mute or obscure them.
- The stream key is private, and the correct scheduled event is selected.
- The Live Control Room preview appears before you start the event; the event is reachable from channel and watch pages and on mobile.
- Your demo materials are suitable for public streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming setup does not replace checking that you have permission to show music, software, customer information, or other material in the broadcast.
Troubleshooting scene changes and the live feed
- The scene changes in OBS but not in the YouTube preview: Confirm the encoder is connected to the intended event and that the Live Control Room preview has received the feed. Wait for the preview before starting the event.
- The wrong window or a blank area appears: Recheck the window or display capture source in that scene and rehearse with the application open in the same arrangement you will use live.
- A hotkey does not switch scenes: Confirm the shortcut is assigned to the intended scene in OBS and test it before the broadcast. Keep the scene-selection controls available as a fallback.
- Viewers see a layout before it is ready: Use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene in preview, then transition it to the live program.
- No preview arrives: Check that OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and that the scheduled event is the one selected in Live Control Room. Keep the key private while checking it.
- Audio or video quality becomes poor: Monitor the Live Control Room during the stream, check the encoder’s active sources and audio input, and test those elements in advance. YouTube recommends ongoing audio and video monitoring.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a product-demo or tutorial show that you want to keep playing as a pre-recorded loop, StreamNeo is a different workflow from live scene switching: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not switch a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, the uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
