You can use a Mac mini and a software encoder such as OBS Studio to send a product-demo playlist to YouTube Live. The Mac plays and encodes the video; YouTube receives it over a secure stream connection and delivers the broadcast. The key limitation is that a local setup depends on the Mac, encoder, power and internet connection continuing to work. This guide shows how to prepare the workflow and what to verify before relying on it unattended.
How the setup works
The signal path is product demo files or a playlist → encoder running on the Mac mini → YouTube Live ingestion → the broadcast watch page. YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts video for streaming. For a prerecorded playlist, the encoder must play the prepared media as its output; a camera or microphone is not inherently required.
A Mac mini is the local host, not the streaming service: if the computer, encoder process, internet connection or power stops, the feed can be interrupted. The exact playlist-loop method depends on the software and version you choose, so verify that behavior in the current encoder before leaving the stream unattended.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring the Mac
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-streaming activation, as noted in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules before using product footage, music, trailers or other third-party material. Permission to show a game or product in a recording does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast it.
Prepare the Mac mini and demo playlist
Choose the stream target before choosing settings
Decide the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then confirm that the particular Mac mini and encoder can sustain that output during a long run. Organize and validate the media
- Keep the demo files in a stable location accessible to the encoder. If you move or rename a file after building the playlist, check that the encoder still finds it.
- Confirm that each clip plays from beginning to end and that the playlist order and intended loop behavior are correct.
- Decide whether gaps, transitions or repeated clips are acceptable for the channel. The exact controls vary by encoder; verify them in the software you install rather than assuming OBS or another encoder has a particular loop mode.
- Check that the footage and any included audio are appropriate for a public, continuous YouTube broadcast and that you have the necessary rights.
Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and verify the channel. Complete any YouTube eligibility steps and wait for activation if this is the channel’s first live stream.
- Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the current YouTube interface to create the event or configure the live broadcast that viewers will watch. A scheduled broadcast and an encoder sending data are related but distinct: sending data does not by itself prove the broadcast is live to viewers.
- Copy the stream destination and key from YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions provide a server URL and stream key to enter in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public screenshot or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure the encoder’s YouTube connection. Use the destination and key supplied for the broadcast. Prefer the secure RTMPS endpoint when YouTube supplies it. Google documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies the valid endpoint, application path, port 443 and hostname authentication requirements in its RTMPS ingestion documentation. Do not substitute a guessed server address or port.
- Start the encoder, then check YouTube. Confirm that YouTube receives a healthy incoming signal and that the broadcast has actually started before sharing the watch page. Watch the output long enough to catch missing media, unexpected pauses or a playlist that fails to advance.
Using OBS Studio on a Mac
OBS Studio is a candidate software encoder for this local workflow. YouTube lists Mac streaming applications, and the OBS Project has published a guide to YouTube scheduled-broadcast controls. That guide was last updated October 8, 2021, so its detailed screen labels may not match the current OBS or YouTube interface. Use the current versions and confirm each control on your own setup rather than following old screenshots blindly.
In OBS, build the output from the product-demo media using the media source or playlist workflow supported by the version you have installed, then connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast using the current integration or the stream URL and key YouTube provides. Test whether the playlist advances and repeats as intended. The available documentation does not establish a single current, exact OBS click path or a universal playlist-loop setting for every version.

Scheduled broadcast auto-start and auto-stop
The OBS Project guide explains that auto-start can take a scheduled broadcast live when encoder data begins. It also warns that auto-stop ends the broadcast when the encoder stops. That distinction matters if you want a broadcast to remain available through a brief encoder interruption: ending the broadcast automatically may prevent the same broadcast from resuming as intended. Confirm current OBS and YouTube behavior with a controlled interruption before relying on reconnects.
Keep the stream running: what a local Mac can and cannot guarantee
A local Mac mini avoids a separate cloud encoder, but it does not remove local failure points. A power cut, internet outage, encoder crash, media path change or computer restart can interrupt the feed. The available platform documentation describes continuous-broadcast concepts, but does not establish that a particular Mac mini configuration will recover from those events automatically.

- Run a long-duration test on the exact Mac, macOS version, OBS version and media library you intend to use.
- Test what viewers see when the network drops briefly and when the encoder process stops. Check whether YouTube keeps the broadcast open or ends it under the settings you selected.
- Verify that the playlist resumes correctly after a restart, and that the media remains available at the same file paths.
- Monitor the first unattended periods instead of assuming that a successful short test proves continuous reliability.
Alternatives to a local Mac mini
If your priority is not having a computer run at home, a cloud service is one option; standalone streaming hardware is another. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video and AJA HELO Plus as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media without a computer. The YouTube directory identifies these options but is not a comparative performance test; current pricing, playlist controls and recovery behavior should be checked with each vendor.

Troubleshooting
YouTube does not receive an incoming signal
- Check that the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key copied from the correct YouTube broadcast.
- Make sure the channel is eligible and live streaming has been activated; first activation can take up to 24 hours.
- If using RTMPS, use the endpoint and connection details supplied by YouTube rather than changing the hostname, application path or port by guesswork.
The encoder is sending, but viewers cannot see the broadcast
Receiving encoder data and taking a scheduled broadcast live are separate states. Check the current YouTube Live Control Room status and the broadcast’s start controls, including any configured auto-start behavior.
The broadcast ends after an interruption
Review the encoder’s auto-stop and YouTube broadcast settings. The OBS Project guide warns that auto-stop ends a scheduled broadcast when encoder data stops; test the current behavior before relying on reconnects to continue the same broadcast.

The playlist stalls or starts with missing media
Check that the media files remain at the locations referenced by the encoder, that each clip plays, and that the current version’s playlist or looping control is configured as intended. Restart and repeat the test after any file move, software update or system restart.
Test before treating it as unattended
There is no established Mac mini model, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec or macOS recovery procedure that can be prescribed for every product-demo playlist. Choose the output target, validate it on the intended hardware and software, and test long runs and interruptions before relying on the setup for an always-on channel.
