To keep retro gaming footage live on YouTube around the clock, first capture or record footage you have the right to use, then send it through an encoder such as OBS or use a cloud service to loop an uploaded video. A console capture setup can produce a live feed while the console and computer stay on; a prerecorded loop can keep playing without a person actively playing. Either way, you need an eligible YouTube channel, a stream key, and permission to broadcast the game and audio.
Choose what you mean by an always-on retro gaming stream
There are two different setups that can look similar to viewers but work differently behind the scenes:
- Live console capture: the console produces the video feed, and a computer running an encoder sends it to YouTube. The console, computer, and local connection must remain available while the broadcast runs.
- Looped prerecorded footage: an encoder or cloud service repeatedly plays a recording or playlist as a YouTube live stream. You do not need to leave the game running, but you need to make sure the uploaded material is permitted for broadcast.
If you want to show a game session happening now, use live capture. If you want a channel to keep replaying edited gameplay or other recordings, use a prerecorded loop. A recording of gameplay is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast just because you captured it yourself.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 to enable livestreaming. These are platform rules that can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility requirements before planning a launch. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help; activate it well before your intended start time.

Review the rules for the exact game and audio
A working capture chain does not grant permission to broadcast the game’s visuals, music, or other material included in the footage. Check the publisher’s current guidance for the specific game, and separately consider third-party music or other intellectual property.
- Nintendo games: Nintendo’s guidelines cover livestreams and encourage creative input and commentary. They say simply copying or livestreaming gameplay without the creator’s own creative or editorial input falls outside the guidelines, subject to the stated exception for footage shared through Nintendo system features. Nintendo also says users need the necessary permissions for third-party intellectual property.
- SEGA games: SEGA’s general guidance is for individual users making gameplay videos with legitimate copies of SEGA products. It calls for new elements such as commentary or narration, says third-party intellectual property such as music requires appropriate permission, and limits profit-driven use to its stated platform-partner exception. Product-specific rules take priority if they conflict with the general guidance.
- Other publishers: Do not treat Nintendo’s or SEGA’s terms as permission for another company’s games. Look up that publisher’s applicable rules and any separate rights for music or other included content.
YouTube Help says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If YouTube identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license may not be enough to prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you archive the broadcast, a Content ID claim may also arrive after the stream ends.

Capture console footage in OBS
Choose a compatible capture route
OBS describes two ways to bring console video into a computer: use a compatible capture device as a Video Capture Source, or capture a supported console remote-play app in a computer window. Which route works depends on the console and computer. A capture card is the relevant hardware category for the first route; check compatibility for your particular console, computer, and operating system rather than choosing a model by brand name alone.
For example, OBS says Nintendo Switch systems work with capture devices while docked. The Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it is not compatible with this capture-device path. OBS advises macOS and Linux users to prefer devices that support UVC for operating-system compatibility. A device may also offer HDMI passthrough for a separate display, but whether you need that depends on your setup and the device.

Connect the console and add its video to OBS
- Connect the console’s video output to the compatible capture device, following the device’s input and connection requirements. If your device supports passthrough and you want to play on a separate screen, connect that output as directed by its manufacturer.
- Connect the capture device to the computer. If you are using remote play instead, open the supported remote-play app on the computer.
- In OBS, add the capture device as a Video Capture Source. For remote play, add the app window as a window capture source instead.
- Confirm in OBS that the source displays the game. Check that the captured image is framed correctly and that any audio you intend to broadcast is present in the encoder’s preview or monitoring setup.
- Set OBS’s encoder output to suit the captured source and your connection, then verify the preview before sending the stream. The source material available here establishes YouTube’s server-URL and stream-key workflow, but does not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval. Use the current YouTube encoder recommendations and your capture device’s supported formats rather than treating one numeric preset as suitable for every console and connection.
Keep in mind that a live capture setup is only as continuous as the equipment and connection it depends on. If the console, computer, encoder, power, or network stops, the local setup cannot keep sending that live feed by itself.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube. Enter them in the corresponding streaming fields in OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Start streaming from OBS. Check YouTube’s preview in Live Control Room to confirm that the incoming image and audio are the ones you intend to broadcast.
- Depending on the scheduled-stream workflow, you may also need to press Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Confirm that the control room shows the broadcast as live rather than assuming that starting OBS alone has completed the YouTube launch.
- When ending the broadcast, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as applicable to your workflow.
Loop prerecorded retro footage as a YouTube live stream
If the goal is a repeating channel rather than a live game session, prepare a recording or playlist and use software that can continuously send prerecorded video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder help lists software options for continuous streams, including Gyre, which it describes as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That makes a cloud loop one possible route, not a requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Before scheduling a loop, review the recording and playlist for game footage, music, overlays, and other third-party material. Automation changes how the video is sent; it does not grant rights or bypass YouTube’s live-content scanning. Decide separately how you will handle the archive: YouTube’s cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one indefinitely running broadcast will produce a single complete automatic archive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the approach that fits your setup
| Approach | What it plays | What must stay available | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS with console capture | A live feed from a console through a compatible capture device | The console, computer, encoder, power, and network connection | You want the stream to show a game session happening live |
| OBS with supported remote play | A console remote-play app captured in a computer window | The computer, remote-play setup, encoder, power, and network connection | Your console and computer support the remote-play capture route |
| Cloud loop of uploaded footage | A prerecorded video or playlist | The cloud streaming service and YouTube stream configuration | You want footage to repeat without leaving a local computer running |
For console capture, verify compatibility across the console, capture device, computer, and operating system. For either live capture or looping, decide the intended stream length and archive plan before launch, and check the rights for the actual game and audio rather than relying on the technical setup to resolve them.

Troubleshoot common launch problems
OBS does not show the console
- Check that the console is connected to the capture device’s input and that the device is connected to the computer.
- Confirm that the capture device is compatible with the console and operating system. For macOS or Linux, OBS advises preferring UVC-supporting devices.
- If using a Switch, confirm that it is a docked system; the Switch Lite does not work with this capture-device route.
- If using remote play, check that the console’s supported app is open and that OBS is capturing the correct window.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Check that OBS contains the server URL and stream key copied from the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that OBS has actually started sending the stream and that the control room has received a preview.
- If this is the first time the channel is going live, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours.
- For a scheduled stream, check whether the workflow requires pressing Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
The broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder
YouTube’s live-stream content scanning may have detected third-party material. Review the game, soundtrack, and other content in the feed; confirm that your permission covers the use; and, where applicable, ask the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
The archive is missing part of a long broadcast
YouTube’s cited encoder instructions promise automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. For a longer continuous broadcast, plan a separate recording or archive process and do not rely on one automatic archive covering the entire run.
Or let it run in the cloud

- The first day is free with no card required.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team; the product is the same across plans, which differ by billing length.
