Build for the feeling, not a film replica: choose a quiet setting, make nature shape the island, and lay out a route that reveals small, lived-in places as you walk. A few recurring colors and details will make the design feel coherent without copying a specific scene or suggesting an official collaboration.
Start with a mood, not a movie set
Write a one-sentence brief before placing paths or furniture. For example: “A quiet village tucked between a forest trail and a river.” Pick two or three recurring ideas—woodland paths, water, gardens, or a village at the forest’s edge—and a small palette of colors and materials to tie areas together.
Use Studio Ghibli as a reference for atmosphere and pacing, not as a design formula. Make an original fan island rather than reproducing recognizable characters, logos, or an exact film composition. Nintendo describes Animal Crossing as a place to make friends and “have fun creating a world of your own” (Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series page).
Plan a walk that reveals the island
A memorable island is more than a collection of themed set pieces. Give visitors a route with a beginning, a couple of places to pause, and a destination. Bends, short transitions, and partial views can make the next area feel like a discovery rather than a display seen all at once.

- Mark the arrival point. Decide what visitors should notice first, such as a village lane, a garden, or a view toward the water.
- Sketch the route. Connect the arrival point to one or two pauses and a destination. Let the route pass through different moods, such as a settled area giving way to a quieter trail.
- Test the walk in-game. Follow the route before committing to extensive terraforming. Check whether the transitions feel natural and the destination is easy to find.
Keep the path legible, but resist making every turn reveal a fully furnished scene. A stretch of trees or an open view can give the more detailed places room to stand out.
Let nature set the structure
Use planted areas, water edges, and changes in elevation as the framework for the island. Place buildings and furniture where they seem to belong within that landscape, rather than treating nature as leftover space around a row of attractions.

Vary the view as visitors move: a more open sightline can make a path feel calm, while a bend or a tree-lined edge can create a modest reveal. These are design choices, not required game mechanics. Work with the terrain and tools available in your version of the game.
Make places feel inhabited
Small, purposeful groupings suggest daily life better than filling every open tile. Try a bench beside a path, a garden near a home, or a few objects arranged around a natural stopping place. Each cluster should give a visitor a reason to pause or help explain how the space is used.

Balance detail with breathing room. Trees, flowers, rocks, and water can carry much of a scene; furniture and ground details work best when they have contrast against less crowded areas. If an object blocks the view or makes the route harder to read, remove or reposition it.
Use custom designs as accents
Original custom designs can add signs, subtle ground details, or textile patterns. Repeat a small number of patterns for wayfinding or texture instead of using a different motif in every area. That restraint helps the island feel like one place rather than a collection of unrelated builds.

Nintendo’s March 12, 2026 announcement says its official island’s Custom Designs Portal features original designs and that a Nintendo Switch Online membership enables access to six designs featured in that announcement. That is a specific example of online access, not a requirement for making an original island.

Take one final walk from arrival to destination. Notice where the scene feels cluttered, where the route is unclear, and whether each pause has enough space to be readable. Capture both an overall view and smaller details if you want to show how the layout and its lived-in touches work together.
Nintendo’s Island Tour Creator instructions require a Nintendo Account and specify that only unedited screenshots and videos captured directly on a Switch can be used. Nintendo’s Dream guidance says visitors cannot change the owner’s actual island, but they can take designs displayed in the Custom Designs Portal.
Keep fan designs and sharing within the rules
Do not present a fan island as endorsed by Nintendo or Studio Ghibli. If you plan to sell designs, earn advertising revenue using game content, or otherwise use Animal Crossing content commercially, read Nintendo’s business and organization guidance and its separate game-content sharing guidance first. The business guidance says users may not obtain financial benefit from use of the game, including by selling custom designs or earning advertising revenue with game content; the separate sharing guidance covers gameplay footage and screenshots on appropriate platforms. These documents have different scopes, so neither should be treated as blanket permission for monetized use. Check the live wording before acting.
