How to Make an Animated Background for a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream

Build a loopable animated background for a YouTube music radio stream, play it in OBS, test YouTube settings, and choose a local or cloud setup for continuous operation.

Make a loopable video, add it to an OBS scene as a looping Media Source, then send the scene to YouTube Live using your server URL and stream key. For a 24/7 music radio stream, the visual, audio, computer, and internet connection all need to keep working; a cloud service is an alternative if you want the stream to continue with your computer off.

Plan the background before you animate

First decide what viewers should see while the music plays. A single animated scene is easiest to manage; a playlist of short visual clips adds variety but needs more setup. Choose the aspect ratio and resolution to match your intended YouTube stream, and keep the motion comfortable to watch over long sessions. A slowly drifting scene, gentle waveform, or subtle particle movement can work better as a continuous backdrop than frequent cuts or flashes.

  • Choose a format and frame: Make a 16:9 composition if you want a conventional widescreen YouTube video. Use a consistent resolution and frame rate throughout the project.
  • Design for repetition: If the animation has a clear beginning and end, make the last frame flow naturally into the first. Alternatively, use subtle motion so the restart is less noticeable.
  • Plan the audio: If the background and music need to stay synchronized, render them together into one video file. If you want the music handled separately in OBS, prepare a separate audio source and verify that it loops or continues as intended.
  • Check rights before production: Use music and visual assets whose licenses permit continuous public live streaming. A license to use a track does not necessarily prevent YouTube from interrupting a stream; see the rights section below.

The official OBS and YouTube material cited here explains playback, broadcast, and platform settings, not which animation editor or asset library to use. Pick a tool you know and check the actual license for each asset rather than assuming that a download is cleared for a public 24/7 broadcast.

Make the animation loop cleanly

Create and export the animation in a video editor or motion-graphics application of your choice. Before putting it on air, watch the end-to-start transition several times. A jump in brightness, a sudden change in camera position, or a conspicuous reset can make a loop feel broken even if OBS is playing it correctly.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a music radio stream, also check that the visual is not distracting at the intended viewing size. If you plan to use text such as a station name or “now playing,” leave it in a safe area rather than close to the edges. These are production choices, not YouTube or OBS requirements.

Loop one video in OBS

OBS Media Source plays a local video file and has a Loop option. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; its Loop setting is off by default. The following workflow uses the Media Source documented by the OBS Project. OBS Media Sources.

  1. Open OBS and select the scene you want to use for the radio stream, or create a new scene.
  2. In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name, such as “Animated background.”
  3. In the Media Source properties, select the local video file you exported.
  4. Turn on Loop, then confirm the source properties. If the visual should fill the canvas, resize and position it in the OBS preview. Check for black bars or cropping before going live.
  5. Add your music or combined audio-and-video source as appropriate. Play the scene and confirm that both picture and sound behave as intended when the video reaches its end.
  6. Save the scene collection and test the complete scene before scheduling a long broadcast.

Use an OBS playlist for multiple clips

If you want several visual clips rather than one repeating background, OBS has a VLC Video source that can play a playlist and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

YouTube connects an encoder such as OBS through a server URL and stream key. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then use the connection details in the encoder. The stream key grants access to send video to your channel: keep it private, do not show it in screenshots, and do not share a configuration file that contains it. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream credentials using the available workflow.
  4. Start the stream from OBS when the scene, audio, and YouTube broadcast are ready. Confirm the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room and watch the stream-health indicator.

Do not confuse starting the encoder with publishing the broadcast to viewers: follow the Live Control Room’s status and controls as well as OBS’s status. Exact YouTube Studio labels can vary as its interface changes.

Choose encoder settings and test the actual stream

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current H.264 guidance includes 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. It also recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can sustain the chosen settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for its current recommendations.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Select a setting your computer and upload connection can sustain. Higher quality is not useful if the stream repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.
  • Bitrate: Treat the figures above as platform guidance for the specified H.264 resolution and frame rate, then test your own upload and complete OBS configuration.
  • Keyframes and rate control: Set a two-second keyframe interval and CBR as YouTube recommends; do not exceed a four-second interval.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz stereo as recommended. Listen for clipping, silence, and unexpected gaps, not just whether the OBS meter moves.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS where available in the encoder’s YouTube connection options.

Run a test with audio and visual movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. A static test image or silence may not reveal the same problems as the finished music-and-animation scene.

Clear music and visual rights for a public live stream

YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. Its guidance warns that even licensed content can interrupt a live stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that your music license covers the intended use as a continuous public live stream on YouTube, not merely personal listening or an ordinary uploaded video.
  • Confirm equivalent rights for loop footage, artwork, fonts, and other elements in the visual.
  • If a rights holder licenses third-party content for your stream, ask whether they need to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A copy of a license alone may not prevent automated interruption.
  • Do not assume that crediting an artist or owning a purchased copy grants broadcast rights.

Plan for 24/7 operation

With OBS on a local computer, the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. That can suit a creator who wants direct control and can maintain the setup. For unattended operation, a cloud continuous-stream service is another approach; YouTube’s encoder guide lists services including Gyre and Upstream, but their current capabilities, prices, terms, and support should be checked with those providers. The reviewed official material does not establish that one approach has better uptime than another.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The background stops at the end of the file The Media Source Loop option is off. Open the source properties and enable Loop; the OBS setting is off by default.
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu VLC is not installed or available to OBS. Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and check the source list again.
YouTube receives no encoder signal The stream key or server URL may not match the selected YouTube stream, or the encoder is not sending. Check the Live Control Room stream details and OBS connection settings. Keep the key private while doing so.
Stream health reports unstable video or dropped frames The chosen bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may be too demanding for the available upload connection or computer. Test the actual scene, check the upload connection, and reduce settings to a sustainable configuration using YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Audio is absent, distorted, or out of sync The audio source, encoding settings, or combined render may not match the scene. Monitor the complete test stream, check the source and OBS audio meters, and verify the recommended audio format and sample rate.
The stream is interrupted despite having a music license YouTube may detect third-party material and the rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel. Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting and review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

For an interrupted stream, check both OBS’s encoder status and the YouTube Live Control Room before restarting. If YouTube identifies a copyright match, resolve the rights issue rather than repeatedly relaunching the same material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same animation for every broadcast?

Yes, provided you have the necessary rights for each use and the loop remains suitable for the stream. A single looping Media Source is the simplest OBS setup.

Does OBS create the animation for me?

No. Create or source the animated video separately; OBS is used here to play and broadcast it.

Can a cloud stream service clear copyright claims?

No. Hosting or looping a video does not grant music or visual rights, and YouTube may still scan the live stream.
