Whether FFmpeg can reconnect depends on which side of the connection failed. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for HTTP connections it reads; those options do not establish automatic recovery for an RTMP stream it publishes. If an RTMP publishing process exits after an internet drop, a supervisor can relaunch it—but that is a restart, not a guarantee of gapless continuation.
First identify what FFmpeg is connecting to
Look at the command’s input and output separately. FFmpeg might be reading a bhajan recording from a local file, pulling an HTTP stream, or publishing audio to an RTMP destination. The reconnect options discussed below belong to the HTTP protocol. They are relevant when the failing connection is an HTTP input, not a general-purpose fix for every network connection in an FFmpeg command.
- HTTP input: FFmpeg reads audio or another stream from an HTTP URL. HTTP reconnect options may apply to that input.
- RTMP output: FFmpeg publishes to an RTMP server. The HTTP reconnect options do not promise to restore this publishing connection.
- Both: If a command reads from one network source and publishes to another, determine which connection failed; the recovery approach may differ for each side.
The FFmpeg project’s protocol documentation shows an RTMP publishing example, ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. It demonstrates real-time publishing syntax, not reconnection after an outage.
When HTTP reconnect options apply
For an HTTP input, consult the HTTP protocol options supported by your installed FFmpeg version. The official documentation describes these controls:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
reconnectreconnects automatically after disconnection before EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection. The FFmpeg documentation says this is useful for “live / endless streams”; this is specifically an HTTP option.reconnect_on_network_errorretries for TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment.reconnect_on_http_errorselects HTTP status codes or classes, such as4xxor5xx, that should trigger retries.reconnect_streamedallows reconnects on streamed, non-seekable resources.reconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retriesandreconnect_delay_total_maxcan bound retry delays, retry count and total retry time.
These options concern HTTP connections. Do not add them to an RTMP publishing output and assume that they will recover it. The appropriate option availability and behavior can depend on your FFmpeg version and build.
Recovering an RTMP publishing process
If an RTMP output fails and FFmpeg exits, an external supervisor or restart loop can start the command again. This may restore publishing if the network is back and the destination accepts a new connection, but it does not ensure that the bhajan stream resumes at the exact point where it stopped.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- A finite local recording may start from its beginning when the command restarts unless your workflow manages playback position.
- A live or otherwise continuing input may behave differently from a finite file when FFmpeg is relaunched.
- The receiving service may accept a new connection, reject it, or require the stream session to be restarted. The FFmpeg protocol documentation does not establish how a particular provider handles this.
Use a process manager appropriate to your operating system and hosting environment, and test it with the actual input and destination. Avoid treating an untested restart as gapless recovery.
Check the FFmpeg build and distinguish a timeout from a retry
List the protocols supported by the installed tools with ffmpeg -protocols. FFmpeg notes that available protocols depend on build configuration. Confirm the local version and build before relying on an option documented for a different installation.

The rw_timeout option sets the maximum time, in microseconds, to wait for network read or write operations. It can help bound a wait that appears stuck, but it is a timeout—not a reconnect policy. It does not relaunch FFmpeg or ensure that a destination session can be resumed. See the FFmpeg project’s protocol documentation for this option and protocol build support.
Troubleshoot the drop in a reliable order
- Inspect the full command. Mark the input URL and protocol, then the output URL and protocol. Establish whether FFmpeg is reading HTTP, publishing RTMP, or doing both.
- Check the local installation. Record the FFmpeg version and build, then run
ffmpeg -protocolsto see which protocols are available. - For a failing HTTP input, consult the HTTP options for that installed version and choose retry limits appropriate to how long the stream should keep trying.
- For a failing RTMP output, have a supervisor relaunch FFmpeg if it exits. Verify whether the input restarts at the beginning or can continue from the needed position, and test whether the destination accepts the new connection.
- Capture the error logs. Distinguish DNS or connection failures, timeouts, authentication rejection and destination-side session rejection. These symptoms point to different causes; the general protocol documentation cannot diagnose a specific provider’s behavior.
A reliable, setup-specific supervisor configuration requires the current command, FFmpeg version, operating system or host, input type and destination service. Those details determine whether the input should restart, seek or continue from a live source.
