FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has no documented option to skip a playlist entry when opening it fails. The reliable workaround is to check the playlist first, omit missing or unreadable files, and give FFmpeg a filtered concat script. If a file exists but FFmpeg cannot parse it, add a probe check before building the final script.
Why FFmpeg does not skip a failed playlist entry
The concat demuxer reads a script containing file entries and directives, then demuxes those files in sequence as if their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps between entries. Its documented options are safe, auto_convert, and segment_time_metadata; none is documented as “skip this entry if it cannot be opened.” Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed in your environment, since the official documentation is a rolling reference: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
That means skipping must happen before FFmpeg consumes the concat script. Generate a new script from the source playlist after checking each file, rather than passing every original row through and expecting the demuxer to recover.
Build a filtered concat playlist

Read the original playlist in the same environment where FFmpeg will run. Resolve each entry to the path it will actually use, including any relative path base.

Check that the path exists and is readable by the process running FFmpeg. Omit entries that are missing or inaccessible, and record the reason so you can correct the source playlist later if needed.

If “opens” means FFmpeg can parse the media—not just that the file can be read—run a probe or preflight operation for each candidate and omit entries whose probe fails. This is a workflow recommendation, not a concat-demuxer skip feature.

Write a fresh concat script containing only entries that passed your checks, using the concat demuxer’s required script syntax and paths suitable for your invocation.

Run FFmpeg against that filtered script. If the run still fails, inspect the remaining files for stream incompatibilities or inaccurate duration information rather than assuming the open check guarantees a valid sequence.

What filtering will not fix
A readable, parseable file can still be incompatible with the other entries. The FFmpeg documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” A preflight that only checks whether a file opens does not establish that the playlist meets this requirement. The documentation also warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. See the concat demuxer requirements and options.
Do not confuse the concat options

auto_convertis not a general repair or skip switch. The documentation describes its current conversion as adding the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter for H.264 streams in MP4, particularly useful when resolutions change. -
The concat protocol treats resources as one byte stream and applies only to formats that support file-level concatenation. It is not a mechanism for skipping a failed playlist item. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes its scope.

The concat filter joins decoded streams in a filter graph; the FFmpeg FAQ identifies it for cases where re-encoding is needed. The FAQ distinguishes it from the demuxer and protocol: FFmpeg concatenation FAQ.

Which concatenation method fits?

Troubleshoot a playlist that still stops or glitches

“No such file” or permission errors: verify the path as seen by the FFmpeg process, not just in your file manager. Check the working directory for relative paths and the account’s read permissions, then regenerate the filtered script.

The file exists but fails during probing: exclude it from the generated script and investigate whether the file is damaged, incomplete, or in a format the installed FFmpeg cannot parse.

The file opens, but concat reports stream errors: compare stream layout, codecs, and time bases among the retained files. The demuxer requires matching streams; remove incompatible entries or choose a workflow suited to them.

Playback develops timestamp artifacts: check the duration information used by the concat demuxer. Its documentation warns that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts.

A path is rejected as unsafe: review the path syntax and the
safesetting. Use-safe 0only when you understand the implications of accepting paths that the default safety check rejects; it does not bypass file-open failures.
