First identify which connection failed. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can help restore an HTTP input, but they do not reconnect an RTMP output to YouTube. For a temporary output failure, FFmpeg documents recovery through its FIFO pseudo-muxer. That can attempt to resume sending, but it is not a guarantee that the same YouTube live event will continue or that every packet will be preserved.
Choose the recovery method for the failed connection
An FFmpeg live pipeline can lose its source input or its connection to YouTube. The relevant retry mechanism depends on which side failed:
| Failure | Relevant method | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is reading an HTTP source and that connection drops | HTTP protocol reconnect options | Reconnecting the HTTP input, subject to the source being available again. These options do not fix a separate RTMP output failure. FFmpeg protocol documentation |
| FFmpeg cannot write its RTMP output to YouTube | FIFO pseudo-muxer output recovery | Attempting recovery from a temporary output failure while processing continues at real-time rate. Recovery timing and buffering affect what reaches the server. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation |
Check FFmpeg’s log at the point of failure: messages about reading the input point toward the source side; write or output errors point toward the YouTube connection. Do not add HTTP input flags as a substitute for RTMP output recovery.
Reconnect an HTTP input
When the source itself is HTTP, FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol supports options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed, as well as retry delay and limit controls. Use the protocol documentation for the exact options and semantics supported by your installed build: FFmpeg protocol options.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The documentation describes reconnect_at_eof this way: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” That behavior concerns an HTTP input reaching EOF; it does not make an RTMP output reconnect to YouTube.
Attempt recovery on an RTMP output
For temporary failures writing to an RTMP server, FFmpeg documents wrapping the output in the FIFO pseudo-muxer. Its example enables attempt_recovery and sets recovery_wait_time to one second:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY
This adapts FFmpeg’s documentation example; it is not a tested command for every input, encoder, FFmpeg build, or YouTube configuration. Replace INPUT with your media source and use the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. The sample URL illustrates the destination format, so copy the actual server URL provided for your stream rather than assuming it is correct for every account or setup.
Check that your build supports the FIFO options
- Run
ffmpeg -h muxer=fifoon the machine that will stream. - Confirm that the output lists the FIFO muxer and the options you intend to use, including
attempt_recoveryandrecovery_wait_time. - Test the full command with your actual input and YouTube setup before relying on it for a live event.
drop_pkts_on_overflow is part of the documented example, but it also signals a trade-off: if the FIFO buffer overflows, packets can be dropped. Do not treat the recovery settings as a promise that all media from an outage will be delivered.

Set and verify the YouTube destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and get the current Live server URL and stream key for the event.
- Enter both values in the FFmpeg output destination. YouTube says returning users may be able to load previous settings, including the key; verify that the values in use are current. YouTube encoder setup
- If YouTube reports that the key is invalid, obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube stream key troubleshooting
Test recovery before an important stream
- Start a private or otherwise safe test stream using the same FFmpeg build, input, output settings, and YouTube workflow you plan to use.
- Briefly interrupt the network connection intentionally. Watch FFmpeg’s log to see whether it reports a read-side input problem or a write-side output failure.
- Check Live Control Room as well as the FFmpeg log. Note whether the same live event resumes or whether you need to start another event.
- Repeat only as needed to understand how your exact setup behaves; the reviewed official documentation does not establish a universal outage duration after which a YouTube session will resume.
YouTube recommends selecting a stream quality that fits the available connection, testing upload bitrate, testing with audio and motion representative of the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and messages while live. These checks can help diagnose or reduce connection and configuration problems, but they do not guarantee that a stream will resume after every outage. YouTube live encoder settings and stream health
Troubleshoot the common failure cases
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an HTTP read or input error | The input protocol and whether the source is available again | Review the HTTP reconnect options and source availability. Do not expect those options to repair an RTMP output. |
| FFmpeg reports an RTMP write or output error | The output destination, network path, and FIFO muxer support in the installed build | Check the current YouTube URL and key, then test the FIFO recovery configuration. |
| YouTube reports an invalid key | The stream key currently configured in FFmpeg | Get a replacement in Live Control Room and update the encoder, following YouTube’s key troubleshooting instructions. |
| The connection is unstable or stream health shows problems | Upload capacity and whether the test matches the stream’s real audio and motion | Choose a quality suited to the connection, test upload bitrate, and monitor stream health and messages as YouTube recommends. YouTube stream health guidance |
| The stream does not resume after a long interruption | What FFmpeg logged and whether Live Control Room still shows the event as active | There is no documented universal recovery threshold for arbitrary outage lengths. Use the test results for your exact setup to determine whether you must start a new event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube without depending on the FFmpeg machine or home connection, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer can be off; the service automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
