FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags do not make an RTMP or RTMPS output to YouTube reconnect. They apply to HTTP input connections. To recover a YouTube stream, first identify which connection failed; then use the right remedy: HTTP retries for a supported HTTP input, a supervisor to restart an FFmpeg process that exits, or a rehearsed backup encoder for higher-availability streaming.
First identify which connection failed
A live FFmpeg workflow has distinct failure points: the source FFmpeg reads, the FFmpeg process itself, the network path, and the output connection to YouTube’s ingest server. A retry setting that helps one layer does not automatically fix another.
- HTTP source input failed: HTTP protocol reconnect options may help FFmpeg reconnect to that input.
- FFmpeg exited: A service manager or wrapper can start a new process, but cannot guarantee a seamless stream.
- YouTube ingest output failed: Do not assume HTTP reconnect options retry an RTMP(S) output. Use the current YouTube settings, investigate the failure, and consider a tested backup encoder.
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect flags as HTTP options. Treat reading from an HTTP URL and publishing to YouTube over RTMP(S) as separate connections and protocols.
Why FFmpeg’s reconnect flags do not fix RTMP output
Options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error are documented for HTTP. They address HTTP input behavior, including disconnects and certain connection errors; they are not a general RTMP(S) output retry switch. Adding them to a command that publishes to YouTube does not, on the available documentation, make that output reconnect.

For an HTTP input, check the options supported by your installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http and consult the current FFmpeg documentation. Flags and defaults can vary by FFmpeg version and build. Do not copy an HTTP retry recipe into the output portion of an RTMP(S) command and expect it to recover YouTube publishing.
Check YouTube’s stream URL, key, and ingest settings
- Copy the current credentials. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as credential-like information that directs and authorizes the feed. Keep it secret: do not publish it in examples, screenshots, or logs. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Verify the output protocol. Use the protocol and destination YouTube provides for the selected ingest setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming; do not substitute a different protocol without configuring it in YouTube and confirming your encoder supports it.
- Check encoding against YouTube’s current table. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and resolution-specific bitrate recommendations. Use its table for the resolution and codec you actually send rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Use the recommended rate and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) video encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Confirm the settings in your encoder and check the live health indicators and messages.
If YouTube reports a key-related encoder start error, follow its stream settings troubleshooting guidance to obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Never expose a real key while troubleshooting.

Use a supervisor when FFmpeg exits
If FFmpeg terminates after an output failure, a process supervisor or wrapper can detect the exit and launch the command again. This is process recovery, not a native RTMP retry feature: a restart may interrupt the broadcast, and it does not prove that YouTube will keep the live event continuous or that every frame will be preserved.
Use the current YouTube URL and key and a complete encoding command that you have already validated. The following is only a schematic showing the destination shape; it is not a tested command or full encoding recipe:

ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
- Use the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and protect the key from logs and public output.
- Set codecs, frame rate, bitrate, muxer, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current ingest guidance and your selected protocol.
- Configure the supervisor to retain useful logs and wait a sensible, bounded interval before restarting. If failures repeat, alert an operator rather than restarting forever and hiding a bad key or invalid configuration.
- Watch Live Control Room after a restart. Confirm that the encoder is connected and the stream preview and health messages are acceptable.
Rehearse the exact command and restart behavior in an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Use a backup encoder when continuity matters
A second encoder is a separate resilience layer from restarting the same FFmpeg process. YouTube advises preparing and testing encoder failover. In its live-streaming tips, YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.

- Configure the backup encoder for the same live event and verify its settings before the broadcast.
- Run a rehearsal with representative audio, motion, and network conditions.
- Simulate the primary failure using YouTube’s suggested test and confirm that the player actually switches to the backup.
- Check the preview, viewer access, audio and video quality, and any local archive for growth and integrity.
A backup should be chosen and rehearsed for the event’s needs; merely having a second encoder available does not establish that failover works. YouTube does not promise seamless continuity for every encoder, network failure, or ingest configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider HLS only when its trade-offs fit
YouTube supports HLS ingest for compatible encoders, with an HLS-specific server URL, key, and segment settings. HLS sends segments rather than one continuous stream, so YouTube notes that it has greater latency than RTMP. It is an alternative ingest path, not a magic retry switch: confirm that the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements and account for latency before changing a working RTMP(S) workflow. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that still drops
| Symptom or failure | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The source stops arriving, but FFmpeg is still running | Determine whether the input is HTTP and inspect FFmpeg’s input-side errors. | Use HTTP reconnect options only for a supported HTTP input. Check the installed build’s ffmpeg -h protocol=http output. |
| FFmpeg exits after a network error | Read the process log and identify whether the failure occurred on input or output. | Use a supervisor with bounded restart delays, retained logs, and alerts for repeated failures; then inspect YouTube Live Control Room. |
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Confirm the current stream URL, key, selected protocol, and encoder status. | Correct the destination or update a key-related error using Live Control Room. Keep the key private. |
| The encoder connects but stream health is poor | Review codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, bitrate for that configuration, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current table. | Correct mismatched settings and test representative content while watching stream health. |
| A restart does not restore the live player | Check whether the event remains active and whether the new encoder session is accepted. | Do not assume process restart means event continuity. Confirm recovery in Live Control Room and test backup rollover beforehand if the event needs higher availability. |
| You are considering switching from RTMP(S) to HLS | Check encoder compatibility, HLS-specific URL/key and segment requirements, and acceptable latency. | Only change ingest protocol after a test; HLS has greater latency than RTMP according to YouTube. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can FFmpeg reconnect to an HTTP video source?
The HTTP protocol options may support reconnection for HTTP inputs; check your installed FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.
Does restarting FFmpeg guarantee the YouTube live event continues without interruption?
No. A supervisor can restart the process, but YouTube event continuity and seamless recovery are not guaranteed. Rehearse and confirm recovery in Live Control Room.
