The documented way to speed up a baby animal’s growth is to feed it an item that species accepts. Exact commands for setting an animal’s age could not be confirmed for current Java or Bedrock releases, so this article does not offer one as a universal fix.
Why there is no official growth command
Minecraft’s official commands guide explains how to type slash commands and what permissions they require. It does not list a command for accelerating animal growth. Its /summon <entity> [x] [y] [z] example creates an entity; it does not age one.
Any site promising a single “grow animals” command should be treated with caution. Command syntax changes between editions and versions, and a command that works in one release may fail or do something else in another.
Feed the baby animal instead
Microsoft Learn’s reference for the Bedrock minecraft:ageable component states that the entity’s growth timer “can be accelerated by giving the entity the items it likes as defined by feed_items.” Feeding is the documented acceleration method.

- Locate a baby animal. Babies are visibly smaller versions of the adult.
- Select the food item that animal accepts and hold it in your hand or hotbar.
- Use the item on the baby animal, the same way you would feed an adult to breed it.
- Repeat with more food if the animal is still a baby. Each accepted item moves the growth timer forward.
The reference describes acceleration of the timer. It does not say that feeding turns a baby into an adult instantly, so check the in-game result rather than assuming it.
Which food works for which animal
Accepted food is species-specific. Do not assume that wheat works on every animal.

| Animal | Accepted feed item | Source and qualification |

| Cow | Wheat | Microsoft’s cow behavior-pack sample defines wheat as its feed item. The same sample sets an ageable duration of 1200, which is a sample value and not a standard in-game growth time. |
| Chicken | Seeds | Microsoft Learn’s minecraft:ageable reference gives seeds as its example for chickens. |
| Other animals | Not stated in the reference reviewed | Check the feed_items value in the entity definition for the species you are raising, or confirm the accepted food in-game. |
Why random tick speed is not an animal fix
The randomTickSpeed game rule is documented in Mojang’s Java snapshot 23w31a notes in connection with blocks that receive random ticks, such as crops and snow and ice accumulation. Those notes do not show that the rule changes how fast animals age, so it should not be used as an animal-growth fix.
Snapshot 25w44a later changed how game rules are named and set a minimum value for minecraft:random_tick_speed. That change is about the rule’s registry and limits, not animal behavior.

Command access depends on edition and permissions
The official guide states: “All commands written in the chat window should be preceded by a forward-slash (‘/’) character.” Whether you can run commands at all depends on how the world is set up.
- Bedrock single-player: enable Allow Cheats in the world’s game settings. Enabling cheats permanently disables achievements in that world, even if cheats are turned off later.
- Java single-player: enable commands through the world options when creating or editing the world.
- Multiplayer on either edition: the player needs a permission level high enough to run commands. The host or server administrator controls this.
Direct age-setting commands: what is and is not established
No current, verified command for setting an animal’s age was found in the official sources reviewed. If you find one online, verify it before using it:

- Confirm your exact edition (Java or Bedrock) and game version.
- Check the official command documentation for that version, not a guide written for an older release.
- Test the command in a copy of the world, not your main save.
- Confirm that the animal ends up in the state you expect, such as baby or adult, and that nothing else changed.
Until a command is verified for your version, feeding the baby animal its accepted food is the reliable method.
