To make an interactive video, start with a video clip, decide what you want viewers to do, then add timed elements such as hotspots, explanatory text, links or quiz questions. If a viewer’s choice should change what happens next, plan a branching scenario instead of adding interactions to a single linear timeline.
Choose the interaction your video needs
Start by writing down what the viewer should understand or do after watching. Match each interaction to that purpose rather than adding clickable elements simply because the tool offers them.
- Reveal extra information or direct viewers somewhere: Add a hotspot or overlay with concise text, an image, media or a link.
- Check understanding: Add a quiz question at a relevant point in the video or at its end.
- Let the viewer’s decision change the next content: Build a branching scenario in which different choices lead to different scenes or lesson segments.
These are distinct formats. H5P’s Interactive Video content type adds interactions to a clip, while its Branching Scenario content type organizes choice-driven content as a tree with multiple branches and endings.
Plan the timeline or branching path
For a linear video
Make a simple timeline before editing. For every interaction, note when it appears, what the viewer sees, and what action dismisses it or moves the video forward. Put an element where it helps the viewer; a quiz about a concept, for example, belongs after the relevant explanation rather than at an arbitrary time.

For a branching scenario
Draw a tree showing each choice, the segment it leads to, and the ending or next decision. Check that every branch has a destination and that viewers can understand the choices before selecting one. The number of branches and endings depends on your design; keep the map manageable enough to review completely.

Choose based on the interaction pattern, where you need to publish or embed the video, and whether your project requires LMS tracking or quiz reporting. Add interactions and review them
- Open the chosen video authoring tool. Create an Interactive Video or equivalent project for a linear clip, or select a Branching Scenario when choices change the next segment.
- Add the source clip or content segments. Use the video you intend viewers to watch. For branching, have the segments and the branch map ready before connecting choices.
- Place each interaction at its planned point. Add a hotspot, explanatory text, image, link, poll or quiz only where it supports the viewer’s task.
- Write short, clear prompts. Tell viewers what an element does or what a question asks. Provide enough context for a choice to be meaningful.
- Set the response or destination. Check that links go to the intended page and that each branch choice leads to the planned segment or ending.
- Preview the video from the beginning. Check timing, readability, flow, and whether interactions interrupt or obscure the content.
- Confirm how results will be collected. If you need tracked quiz results, validate the reporting route before publishing. Vimeo says full quiz-result visibility depends on an LMS that integrates with its supported standards; SCORM integration and LMS tracking require learner seats.

Test the viewing path before publishing
- Watch the full linear video and confirm every interaction appears at the intended time.
- For a branching video, test every choice and follow each path through to its ending.
- Check that buttons, instructions and links are understandable in the actual embed, publishing site or learning environment.
- Verify that the reporting data you need is available in the destination system.
- Test on the devices and in the viewing environment your audience will use; the feature documentation cited here does not establish universal behavior across devices.
Common problems and fixes
A quiz or hotspot feels unrelated
Move it to the moment when the information is useful, or remove it if it does not support the viewer’s goal. Review the timeline against the learning or viewing objective.

A branch ends unexpectedly
Compare the built scenario with your branch map. Check each choice’s destination and ensure every intended path reaches a segment or ending.
Quiz results are missing from the LMS
Confirm that the LMS supports the relevant integration standards and that the Vimeo account has the required Enterprise setup and learner seats. An in-video quiz alone does not establish that full results will appear in your LMS.
