For ad revenue sharing, the usual threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 eligible public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million eligible Shorts views in 90 days. Reaching a threshold lets you apply; YouTube still reviews your channel, and approval does not guarantee a particular income.
Ways to earn money on YouTube
YouTube’s monetization options pay for different audience actions. Some rely on advertising or Premium viewing; others require viewers to pay for perks, highlight a live-chat message, or buy a product. Availability depends on your location, channel, content, and the relevant YouTube program terms.
| Revenue route | What can generate revenue | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Watch Page ads | Ads shown or streamed on eligible public videos’ Watch Pages | Requires the higher YPP eligibility tier and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube describes the creator share as 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue. |
| Shorts Feed ads | Ads shown between Shorts | Revenue is allocated through the Shorts Creator Pool. YouTube describes the creator share as 45% of the amount allocated to that creator, not 45% of a fixed per-view payment. |
| YouTube Premium | Eligible content watched by YouTube Premium members | Revenue depends on Premium viewing and applicable program terms; it is not a fixed amount per view. |
| Channel memberships | Recurring payments for channel membership and perks | Requires feature eligibility and acceptance of the applicable Commerce Product Module. |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Paid messages or stickers in eligible live chats | Availability and eligibility vary; these depend on viewers choosing to pay during a livestream. |
| Super Thanks | One-time viewer support on eligible videos and Shorts | Requires feature eligibility; viewers choose whether to make a purchase. |
| Shopping | Products from your own store or products from other brands | Country, channel, participating merchant, product, and program eligibility apply. YouTube’s official material does not establish a universal commission rate. |
YouTube’s current earnings help page describes a 70% share of net revenue for memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks under the Commerce Product Module. The applicable module and your channel’s agreements determine the terms.
How many subscribers do you need to get paid?
YouTube has an expanded YPP tier for earlier access to certain fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible countries and regions, and a higher tier for ad and Premium revenue sharing. These thresholds are not interchangeable.

| YPP route | Subscriber and activity thresholds | What it can unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Expanded YPP, where available | 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Earlier access to certain fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to individual eligibility and availability. |
| Higher ad revenue tier | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | Eligibility to apply for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing, subject to review and applicable modules. |
These are YouTube’s eligibility figures in its help documentation accessed October 3, 2026. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current eligibility pages before planning around them: the expanded tier is limited to eligible regions, and platform requirements can change. YouTube has also announced planned YPP term updates effective February 1, 2027; check the official terms closer to that date.
Which watch time and views count?
- Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. The Shorts route uses qualified Shorts views over the stated 90-day period.
- Views and watch time from paid advertising campaigns do not count toward YPP eligibility thresholds.
- Use the eligibility progress shown in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that every public view or hour qualifies.
How to apply to the YouTube Partner Program
- Check regional and channel eligibility. Open YouTube Studio’s Earn area to see which YPP features are available to your channel and location. For expanded YPP, verify that your country or region is currently included.
- Meet the relevant threshold. For ad and Premium revenue sharing, reach the subscriber requirement and one of the qualifying watch-time or Shorts-view paths. For earlier expanded-YPP access, meet its subscriber, upload, and activity requirements.
- Complete account prerequisites. YouTube lists regional availability, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account among the application prerequisites.
- Apply through YouTube Studio. Follow the Earn area prompts, review and accept the terms and modules offered for your channel, and submit the application.
- Wait for channel review. Hitting a threshold is not automatic acceptance. YouTube reviews the channel against its policies; the platform says every channel meeting the threshold goes through a standard review process.
Even after acceptance, not every creator receives every feature. Some have separate age, location, content, Made for Kids, module-acceptance, or other eligibility conditions.

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?
There is no universal YouTube payment per 1,000 views. YouTube states that its partner agreement does not guarantee how much—or whether—a creator will be paid. A revenue-share percentage is not an RPM promise: Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed allocation, Premium viewing, audience activity, and feature eligibility work differently. The official terms cited here do not establish a general earnings-per-view figure that applies across channels.
Use your own YouTube Studio analytics and agreements to understand your channel’s actual results. Do not multiply views by a quoted universal rate and treat the result as expected income.

Can you make money on YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Eligible creators can earn a share of Shorts Feed advertising revenue through the YPP Shorts revenue model. To qualify through the Shorts route for the higher ad-sharing tier, YouTube lists 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. The 45% figure YouTube publishes applies to a creator’s revenue allocated from the Creator Pool; it is not a fixed payment for each view. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour threshold.
What can prevent monetization or limit earnings?
- Channel and content policies: Monetized channels and content must comply with YouTube’s applicable channel monetization policies and Community Guidelines.
- Copyright and rights: You need the necessary rights to the material you use. Copyright issues can affect whether content qualifies for monetization.
- Advertiser suitability: Ads require advertiser-friendly content. A channel’s YPP status does not mean every video will be suitable for ads.
- Feature-specific terms: Fan funding and commerce features have their own requirements and terms; eligibility for one does not establish eligibility for all.
- Ongoing activity: YouTube’s current YPP overview says it may remove monetization from a channel that has not uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for six months or more. This is a platform reservation, not a guarantee that every inactive channel will lose monetization.
- Taxes: YouTube warns that creators may owe taxes on earnings. Tax treatment depends on your location and circumstances; consult your local tax authority or a qualified tax professional.
Keeping a monetized channel live with prerecorded videos
A 24/7 prerecorded livestream is a channel-format choice, not a shortcut around YPP thresholds, review, or content policies. You need rights to everything in the stream, and repetitive or reused material can raise monetization concerns. Review YouTube’s current policies before using loops; a stream running continuously does not itself guarantee eligible watch time, monetization, or earnings.
