How to Make MSI Afterburner Permanent: A Reliable Windows Startup Guide

Make MSI Afterburner settings persist across reboots by saving a tested profile, enabling Start with Windows and Apply at Windows Startup, then verifying real GPU behavior.

To make an MSI Afterburner overclock, undervolt, or fan curve load automatically, save and apply a tested profile, enable Start with Windows in Settings → General, then click Apply at Windows Startup in the main window. Reboot and verify the real clocks, voltage, temperatures, and fan behavior under load.

“Permanent” here means automatically reapplied by Windows. Afterburner does not necessarily write the settings into your GPU’s VBIOS, and a driver update, software conflict, failed tune, or reset can remove or override them.

What “permanent” means in MSI Afterburner

Afterburner stores tuning values in software profiles and reapplies the selected profile when Windows starts. It is persistence for your Windows installation, not a guaranteed firmware modification. Closing the interface can also stop monitoring and may affect fan-control behavior, depending on your configuration.

MSI says Afterburner works with graphics cards from all brands, although the available voltage, power, clock, and fan controls depend on the GPU, its BIOS, driver, firmware, and whether it is a laptop design. See MSI’s official Afterburner page for legitimate downloads and current listings.

Before you automate anything

  • Install Afterburner from MSI or Guru3D only. MSI currently lists 4.6.6 Final (October 2025) and 4.6.7 Beta (February 2026); Guru3D lists 4.6.7 Beta 3 dated June 19, 2026. Treat the stable final as the default unless a beta specifically fixes support for your hardware.
  • Install the current graphics driver for your GPU and restart Windows. A newly installed card may not be recognized until the driver and reboot are complete.
  • Decide whether you are saving an overclock, undervolt, fan curve, or a combination. A custom fan curve changes cooling behavior; it does not itself increase GPU clocks.
  • Create a stock or conservative fallback before experimenting. Automatic startup can repeatedly reapply an unstable profile.

For an in-game overlay, frame-rate display, or detailed sensor readout, install RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) as well. RTSS is the monitoring and overlay companion, not the overclocking tool; both programs need to remain active for Afterburner’s in-game monitoring data to appear. Guru3D lists RTSS 7.3.7 Final (September 30, 2025) at its download page.

Save a tested profile

  1. Open Afterburner and adjust one group of settings at a time.
  2. Click Apply.
  3. Validate the result with a benchmark and then with the games or workloads you actually use.
  4. Click the Save icon.
  5. Click a numbered slot from 1 through 5.

A practical layout is:

Slot Suggested use
1 Stock or recovery settings
2 Conservative undervolt
3 Daily performance profile
4 Game-specific profile, if needed
5 Experimental settings

Saving more than one curve is worthwhile because rebuilding a custom curve can take considerable time, according to MSI’s support guide. Number keys load profiles; MSI also documents Ctrl+D for reset and Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+5 for deleting profiles. Use those shortcuts cautiously: accidental key combinations can remove a saved profile.

Enable both Windows startup controls

  1. Open Settings in Afterburner and select the General tab.
  2. Enable Start with Windows, then click Apply or OK.
  3. Return to the main Afterburner window and select the profile you want loaded.
  4. Make sure the profile-lock icon is unlocked. A locked profile prevents changes to the startup-application control.
  5. Click the Windows-shaped Apply at Windows Startup button in the main window.

The controls are not interchangeable. Start with Windows launches Afterburner; Apply at Windows Startup marks the selected saved profile for automatic application. Enabling only the first option can produce the familiar result where the application opens but the GPU remains at stock settings. Labels can vary slightly with a skin or version.

Reboot and prove that the profile loaded

Closing and reopening Afterburner is not a startup test. Restart Windows, then check all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Afterburner is running and the intended profile number is selected.
  • Core clock, memory clock, voltage, power limit, and fan mode match the profile’s intent.
  • Under a real game or benchmark, monitoring shows the expected operating behavior and temperatures.
  • The fan curve responds at the temperatures where you configured it.

A slider value is not proof of a fixed in-game clock. Modern GPUs dynamically adjust voltage and frequency according to workload, temperature, power, and boost rules. RTSS can provide an on-screen check, while Afterburner’s monitoring panel provides the same data without an overlay.

Test for stability before enabling startup

MSI recommends testing with tools such as Unigine Heaven or FurMark, watching for flickering, crashes, and shutdowns, and then testing in an actual game. A stress test that passes does not guarantee stability in every game engine or graphics API.

  1. Record baseline temperatures, clocks, power draw, and performance at stock.
  2. Change one group of settings at a time and click Apply.
  3. Run a short validation test, then several longer sessions in your normal games.
  4. Look for artifacts, driver resets, black screens, crashes, abnormal fan behavior, or overheating.
  5. Save the result only after it is repeatable, then enable startup automation.

For long-term daily use, a modest overclock or a well-tested undervolt is usually more defensible than a borderline maximum. Overclocking can increase heat, power use, noise, and instability; undervolting can reduce those costs but can still crash when set too aggressively. Raising power or temperature limits increases the demands placed on the cooling system. MSI notes that damage caused by overclocking may not be covered by the relevant manufacturer’s warranty.

Why the app starts but the profile does not apply

Work through these causes in order:

  1. Confirm that the desired settings were applied and saved to the intended numbered slot.
  2. Confirm that the correct slot is selected, rather than another profile.
  3. Unlock the profile icon and verify Apply at Windows Startup is active.
  4. Verify Start with Windows under Settings → General.
  5. Restart Windows instead of merely relaunching the application.
  6. Temporarily disable NVIDIA App, AMD Software, ASUS GPU Tweak, motherboard utilities, or other fan and tuning tools that may overwrite Afterburner.
  7. If the GPU is not recognized, install the current driver and restart. Hybrid-graphics systems can also expose an integrated GPU while the game uses a different device.
  8. Try the stock or conservative profile. If it works, rebuild the performance profile in smaller increments.

Driver initialization can occur after a startup program, and a vendor service may restore stock settings later. First test Afterburner’s built-in controls. A Task Scheduler workaround is configuration-dependent and should be treated as a fallback, not a universal command-line requirement; MSI does not publish one recipe that fits every current Windows setup.

Recover from a bad automatic profile

  1. Open Afterburner and click Reset (or use Ctrl+D as documented by MSI).
  2. Disable Start with Windows and Apply at Windows Startup.
  3. Select your stock or recovery profile and reboot.
  4. Reapply changes gradually, validating each step before saving.

If instability makes Windows difficult to use, boot into Safe Mode or another Windows startup-recovery environment and disable Afterburner there. Do not keep retrying a profile that causes repeated crashes, black screens, artifacts, overheating, or uncontrolled fan behavior.

Laptop limitations

Laptop GPUs are more constrained by manufacturer firmware. MSI recommends minor boosts and close CPU and GPU temperature monitoring, and says custom fan curves may be unavailable when the BIOS presets fan control. A desktop procedure therefore cannot be assumed to work on a laptop: some voltage, power, and fan controls may be missing or ignored.

Stable release or beta?

Use the stable MSI listing unless you have a documented compatibility reason to try a beta. A beta can add support for a newer GPU or fix a specific bug, but it also carries a greater regression risk. Record the Afterburner version when troubleshooting so a change in behavior can be correlated with an update. Official distribution is through MSI and Guru3D; avoid fake sites and bundled “premium” installers.

What a reliable permanent setup looks like

A dependable setup has four properties: the profile applies after reboot, remains stable across your actual games, keeps temperatures and fan behavior reasonable, and can be undone immediately with a known-good stock profile. Recheck it after a major graphics-driver update, Windows change, GPU firmware change, or installation of another tuning utility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MSI Afterburner work with non-MSI graphics cards?

Yes. MSI says Afterburner supports graphics cards from all brands, but individual controls vary by GPU, BIOS, driver, and firmware.

Does Afterburner need to stay open?

It must launch at startup to apply the software profile. For live monitoring, fan control, and an on-screen display, Afterburner and the relevant background components, including RTSS for its overlay functions, need to remain active.

Does Afterburner permanently modify the GPU?

No. It reapplies software settings at Windows startup; that is different from writing a permanent change to the GPU’s VBIOS.

Is RTSS required for overclocking?

No. RTSS is needed for its overlay and related monitoring functions, not for every basic Afterburner tuning function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens after a graphics-driver update?

The profile may still work, but driver changes can alter recognition or stability. Reboot, verify the real clocks and temperatures, and fall back to the stock profile if behavior changes.
