Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →OBS has no documented setting that remembers a YouTube playlist’s last video after a restart. To resume automatically, show a YouTube player in an OBS Browser Source and use a custom player that saves the current playlist index and playback time, then restores both when the player starts again. A static playlist embed can show the list, but the cited YouTube documentation does not say it remembers its position across OBS restarts.
What you need to restore
There are two separate pieces of playback state: the playlist item and the position within that item. YouTube’s IFrame Player API lets a player load a playlist at a specified index and report the current index. To return to the same point in the video as well, save the playback time too.
- Playlist index: which video is playing. The index is zero-based:
0is the first item. - Playback time: how far into that video playback has reached.
The API documentation describes these controls, not an automatic OBS resume feature. You will need a custom player page and some way to store the saved state so it remains available after OBS closes.
Choose the right OBS source
Browser Source for an embedded YouTube player
In OBS, add a Browser Source to the scene that should show the player. OBS describes this source as displaying a webpage, which is the appropriate source type for an embedded YouTube player. The page can be a hosted player page or one served locally.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why Media Source and VLC Video are different
OBS’s Media Source plays supported local audio and video files. The VLC Video source can play a playlist of media items and requires VLC to be installed. Its documented playlist controls are for those media items; OBS does not document them as a way to resume a YouTube playlist’s last video after restarting.
See the OBS Media Sources and Sources Guide documentation for the source roles and controls.

Build a player that restores the playlist state
- Add a Browser Source: in OBS, choose the scene, add a Browser Source, and point it to the page containing your YouTube player. Keep the player controls visible while setting up and testing.
- Initialize the YouTube IFrame Player API: configure the player with the playlist ID. The API’s
loadPlaylistmethod accepts an optionalindexthat specifies the first playlist item to play; if omitted, it defaults to0. - Save state during playback: use
getPlaylistIndex()to obtain the current item’s zero-based index and the player’s time controls to obtain the playback time. Save both values somewhere durable, such as a local state file managed by a helper or local service. - Restore on startup: when the player page starts, read the saved index and time, load the playlist at that index, and seek to the saved time after the player reports that it is ready.
- Test a full OBS restart: play a playlist item, let it advance, close OBS, then reopen OBS and check that the expected item and approximate position return. Adjust your state-saving and player-ready handling if the page starts before the saved state is available.
The API supports loading a playlist and controlling playback position; the persistent storage and startup sequence are implementation work you must provide. The official documentation does not establish a particular third-party script, plugin, or browser-source storage implementation as a tested solution. Read Google’s YouTube IFrame Player API Reference for the player methods and events.
Static playlist embed versus saved-state player
| Approach | What it does | Restart behavior | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static YouTube playlist embed | Loads a playlist using the embedded player parameters, including listType=playlist and list=PLAYLIST_ID. |
The cited embed documentation does not say it restores a saved item or time after OBS restarts. | Simpler to configure, but does not document automatic position persistence. |
| API-controlled player with durable state | Loads a playlist at a specified index, then can seek to the saved playback time. | Can restore both values if your implementation saves and reloads them successfully. | Requires custom player code and state storage. |
Google’s YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters documentation describes playlist selection through URL parameters; selecting a playlist is not the same as persisting cross-restart playback state.

Handle autoplay being blocked
Automatic playback is not guaranteed. Browser policies can block autoplay or scripted playback, and the IFrame Player API documents an onAutoplayBlocked event. If the restored player loads at the correct index but does not start, use the visible player controls to press Play. Test this behavior in the same browser-source setup and machine you intend to use.
What YouTube’s resume guidance does—and does not—cover
YouTube Help says, “When you play the video again, it will restart from where you were.” That guidance concerns returning to a partially watched video on YouTube; it does not promise that an embedded playlist in OBS will restore its last item after OBS restarts. See YouTube Help: Video progress bar.

Troubleshooting
- The playlist always starts at the first video: check that your saved index is actually being read at startup and passed to
loadPlaylist. An omitted index defaults to0. - The right video loads, but starts at the beginning: save playback time as well as the index, then seek after the player is ready.
- The player restores but stays paused: autoplay may have been blocked. Use the visible controls to start playback; check the API’s
onAutoplayBlockedevent for handling in your player page. - The index points to a different item when shuffle is on: the API documents the index as zero-based when the playlist is not shuffled. For predictable index-based restoration, test with shuffle off.
- The VLC Video source does not show the YouTube playlist: VLC Video is for media items, not a documented YouTube embedded-player resume workflow. Use a Browser Source for the webpage player.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than an OBS scene displaying an embedded playlist, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
