The most reliable way to make Skyrim Special Edition feel smoother is to find the specific cause—low rendering performance, uneven frame pacing, a mod conflict, or a runtime mismatch—then change one thing at a time. Start with a vanilla test and Bethesda’s recommended graphics adjustments; add frame-rate and modding utilities only after you know the game’s executable runtime.
First, separate the symptom from the cause
“Not smooth” can describe several different problems, and each points to a different fix:
- Low FPS everywhere: often a graphics setting, GPU, resolution, or CPU limit.
- Stutter despite a high FPS counter: suspect inconsistent frame pacing, background activity, asset streaming, or a mod/plugin issue.
- Drops mainly outdoors or in cities: dense grass, shadows, distant objects, NPCs, city overhauls, weather effects, or post-processing may be overwhelming the system.
- Physics behaving erratically: an uncapped or unusually high frame rate can be a factor; use a sensible cap.
- Long loads: large assets, save complexity, storage, or mod deployment may be responsible. An SSD can help loading and asset access, but it will not cure a CPU-bound scene.
- Crashes or a black screen: troubleshoot startup and compatibility separately from ordinary performance. Bethesda’s crash guidance and mod-update guidance are useful starting points.
A stable, consistent frame rate often feels better than a higher number that fluctuates sharply. Do not assume every hitch needs an “FPS boost” mod.
Know your executable runtime before modding
“SE” and “Anniversary Edition” are often used as shorthand for different things. For compatibility, the important detail is the game’s runtime—the version of the executable currently installed—not simply the name of the edition or whether you own optional Anniversary content.

The mod documentation consulted for this guide lists Steam runtime 1.6.1170, GOG runtime 1.6.1179, and older runtime 1.5.97 as relevant compatibility targets. It also identifies SKSE 2.2.6 for the 1.6.117x era. These are version-sensitive reference points, not permanent guarantees: check the live SKSE page and each mod’s requirements against your installed executable before downloading.
SKSE is a script extender required by many advanced mods; it is not itself a performance booster. Many DLL-based plugins also require the matching Address Library. A mismatch can prevent launch, trigger errors, or leave a plugin unloaded. After a Bethesda update, check whether dependent mods support the new runtime before launching through SKSE.
Build a clean vanilla baseline
Before changing settings or installing utilities, find out how the unmodded game performs:

- Disable mods in a separate test profile if you use a mod manager. Avoid removing scripted or gameplay-changing mods from the middle of an established save just to test; use a clean profile or a suitable test save.
- Open the Skyrim launcher through Steam and choose Options.
- In the Detail section, select Reset to restore the launcher’s hardware-detected video settings. Bethesda recommends this reset before manual adjustments.
- Test a repeatable route: an interior, a city, an outdoor area, and—if relevant—a combat encounter. Compare the same locations and activity after each change.
- Note resolution, display refresh rate, approximate FPS, where drops occur, and whether the problem is hitching, input delay, a freeze, or a crash.
Bethesda’s official performance troubleshooting also recommends updating graphics drivers and checking that the game uses the intended GPU. A repeatable baseline is more informative than judging only the opening sequence.
Lower expensive settings in a controlled order
Bethesda identifies godrays, shadows, decals, screen-space reflections, SSAO, snow shaders, lens flare, view distance, distant-object detail, fade settings, resolution, and anti-aliasing as settings to consider when performance is poor. Change a few at a time, retest, and keep the changes that actually help.
- Godrays and shadows: reduce these first if outdoor scenes are slow. The trade-off is less dramatic light and less detailed shadowing.
- Screen-space reflections and SSAO: lower or disable them if the GPU is struggling. Reflections and contact shading may look less rich.
- Grass, object, actor, and item fade distances: reducing fade distances lowers how much of the world is rendered at once. Expect more pop-in or a less populated-looking landscape.
- Distant-object detail and other view-distance settings: lower these if far-off scenery is costly, especially outdoors.
- Resolution: reduce it if the GPU is the bottleneck. This is a direct performance lever, but can make the image visibly softer.
- Anti-aliasing: try changing from TSAA to FXAA or Off if needed. TSAA can soften the image; less anti-aliasing means more visible jagged edges.
There is no reliable universal percentage gain for any one setting: results depend on hardware, resolution, runtime, drivers, and installed content. If reducing resolution makes a large difference, the GPU is a likely limit. If it barely changes performance, look at CPU-heavy scenes, background tasks, frame pacing, or mods instead.

Check Windows, drivers, and GPU selection
- Use the right GPU: on a laptop or a system with integrated graphics, confirm Skyrim is assigned to the discrete or high-performance GPU. Bethesda provides GPU-selection guidance.
- Update the graphics driver: use the driver from your GPU manufacturer. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, consider whether returning to the previous known-good driver is appropriate.
- Test plugged in: on a laptop, connect power and use a performance-oriented power profile. Names and available controls vary by Windows version and manufacturer.
- Reduce background interference: test with unnecessary overlays, recording, monitoring, browser tabs, RGB utilities, and other resource-heavy applications closed. Change one variable at a time; do not permanently disable security software.
Improve frame pacing without chasing an extreme FPS target
Match a stable cap to what the system can sustain and the display’s refresh behavior. A steady 60 FPS target may feel better on a 60 Hz display than large swings above and below that rate. A high-refresh or variable-refresh display can need a different cap and synchronization setup, so there is no one setting that fits every monitor.
SSE Display Tweaks offers frame-rate limiting, refresh-rate and display-mode options, and a physics fix, among other display-related changes. Its documentation describes DXGI flip-model behavior that can improve borderless-window performance or reduce stutter and input latency in some configurations. That is not a guarantee for every Windows, driver, monitor, or synchronization setup.
The mod page says its configurable limiter defaults to 240 FPS. That is a configuration default, not a recommended target for every player. Use a cap your setup can hold smoothly; do not leave the game uncapped simply because the GPU can render a high number. Avoid stacking multiple limiters or changing V-Sync, driver synchronization, display mode, and the mod limiter all at once.

After installing Display Tweaks, read the documentation for the version you installed. Its settings are in DataSKSEPluginsSSEDisplayTweaks.ini; display mode and limiter behavior may depend on the configuration file and version. Do not blindly copy an old INI snippet. Exclusive fullscreen is not automatically better: the mod’s documentation describes cases where borderless flip-model presentation can work as well as or better than exclusive fullscreen.
A cautious modding foundation
If vanilla Skyrim runs well but your modded game does not, use a mod manager and establish compatibility before adding graphics or gameplay changes.

- Install the SKSE build intended for your runtime and use the launch method specified by its documentation.
- Install the corresponding Address Library if a plugin requires it.
- For SSE Engine Fixes, confirm the release supports your runtime and follow its current file-specific instructions. The page documents support for 1.5.97, 1.6.1170 and newer, and GOG 1.6.1179 in its compatibility notes; do not assume those notes cover future updates.
- Pay attention to files that must sit in the game’s root folder beside
SkyrimSE.exe. Engine Fixes distinguishes its plugin/data component from preloader/root files; the preloader does not go in the Data folder. Its requirements and packaging can vary by release. - Launch and test before adding more mods. Keep a separate working profile or rollback path.
A frequently cited Engine Fixes file was listed as version 7.0.20 on February 26, 2026. Treat that as a dated listing, not as a claim that it remains the latest release. Check the current files and installation instructions before use. Likewise, a popular utility is not automatically essential for every installation.
Runtime rule: never install a DLL-based mod just because an old guide calls it essential. Confirm that the installed executable, SKSE, Address Library, and plugin all agree. Bethesda warns that game updates can make installed mods incompatible.

- High-resolution textures: can use more VRAM and increase asset-streaming pressure. They may produce hitching or texture pop-in on systems with limited memory; more VRAM does not fix a CPU or script bottleneck.
- ENB and other post-processing: effects such as ambient occlusion, depth of field, lighting, and weather effects can be demanding. Temporarily disabling the effect is a useful diagnostic comparison.
- Grass and tree overhauls: add exterior density, shadows, draw calls, and distant rendering. If only wilderness areas slow down, test these before lowering every global setting.
- City and NPC overhauls: can add objects, actors, AI activity, and scripts. If performance falls mainly in towns, investigate the changes concentrated there.
- Physics systems: physics-enabled clothing, hair, bodies, or objects can add CPU work, especially when many characters are present.
- Script-heavy quests, followers, or survival systems: can cause delayed responses or periodic hitches that graphics settings will not necessarily resolve.
- Weather and lighting mods: can alter shadows, particles, visibility, and volumetric effects. Test them separately rather than assuming the base game is responsible.
Troubleshoot by symptom

Add mods without losing a working setup
Install foundational utilities first, then add only a few mods at a time. Launch the game and repeat your test route after each group. Keep a brief change log, separate test profiles from a long-running playthrough, and preserve a known-good setup before updating the game or a large collection of DLL plugins. When troubleshooting, roll back the most recent change rather than changing many settings at once.

If the game still fails, restore the last known-good configuration and follow Bethesda’s update and mod troubleshooting advice. For persistent crashes, Bethesda’s support guidance may request diagnostic details such as a DxDiag file.
Stable-build checklist
- Know your storefront and executable runtime.
- Test vanilla before diagnosing a modded setup.
- Reset launcher settings, then lower expensive options methodically.
- Confirm the game uses the intended GPU and current suitable driver.
- Use a stable frame cap; do not treat the Display Tweaks 240 FPS default as a target.
- Match SKSE and every DLL plugin to the installed runtime.
- Follow root-folder instructions for preloader files.
- Add mods in small batches and preserve a working profile.
- After a game update, verify mod compatibility before relaunching the full setup.
Some limits remain: a heavy visual or NPC-heavy modlist can exceed a system’s GPU, CPU, or memory budget, and no configuration tweak guarantees a universal FPS gain. If the game is stable and consistent at a reasonable cap, further reductions may cost more visual quality than they return in smoothness.
