What is available—and whether difficulty can be changed mid-game—depends on the specific title.
Can you lower battle difficulty mid-game?
Check the game’s Settings, Options, or Game Settings menu for a combat-difficulty control. Some games allow changes during a playthrough, but there is no universal rule. Konami’s support article, published October 7, 2024, says combat difficulty can be adjusted later in the Setting menu for the game it covers, while puzzle difficulty cannot be changed mid-playthrough: Konami Support: Can I change the battle difficulty or puzzle difficulty during the game? A separate Square Enix support page directs players to Menu → Options → Game Settings for its title: Square Enix Support: How do I change the game’s difficulty level?
Those are title-specific examples, not instructions for every RPG. Read your game’s help text or official support page before changing settings; a difficulty option might affect combat alone, or it might also affect other parts of the game.
Try existing tools before grinding
If you would rather keep the current difficulty—or the game does not let you change it—inspect the systems it provides for preparing the current party. Depending on the game, useful adjustments may include:

- Build or stat choices: Check whether party members’ current attributes or abilities can be reassigned or configured for the encounter.
- Equipment: Review what is equipped and whether another available weapon, armor piece, or enhancement better suits the fight.
- Consumables: Check your inventory for items the game allows you to use in battle, and consider using them when they address the problem you are facing.
- Party or companion commands: If the game provides direct commands, make sure they suit the situation rather than leaving a useful action unused.
These are possibilities to look for, not features every turn-based RPG has. Bandai Namco’s guide to Echoes of Aincrad discusses stat allocation, weapon enhancement, item use, and partner commands, but identifies that game as an action RPG. Diagnose what is making the fight hard
To find a useful adjustment, change one setting or tactical choice, then try the encounter again. Note what went wrong: did the party fail to survive, deal too little damage, run short of resources, or struggle with one particular enemy? Matching your next change to the observed problem is a practical way to troubleshoot your own game; it is not a universal combat mechanic.

For example, if the problem is survival, inspect defensive options the game actually offers. If you are running out of items or other resources, check whether using them earlier or changing your approach helps. If one enemy is the sticking point, look for relevant abilities, equipment, or commands in that game. Avoid assuming that a familiar role, status effect, or counter exists unless the game explains it.

Exact menu paths, whether difficulty can be changed mid-run, and which party or status-effect choices work all depend on the title. Share the game—and, when relevant, your platform—to get useful button-by-button directions or encounter-specific advice. A guide for another game, especially one from a different subgenre, may describe systems you do not have.
