On the original PC control scheme, the manual says to hold Left Alt. This triggers a gallop; the available sources do not establish a vanilla upgrade that permanently raises a horse’s base speed.
Make your horse gallop
- Mount your horse.
- While riding, press and hold the sprint or gallop control. Bethesda’s Skyrim manual specifies Left Alt for the original PC controls.
- If Left Alt does not work, check your platform’s control mapping. The sprint input can be remapped; the UESP controls reference describes the control bindings.
Galloping is the immediate way to travel faster on horseback. It is an action, not a documented permanent increase to the horse’s top speed.
Can a different horse run faster?
The reviewed vanilla horse reference does not establish that any ordinary or named horse has a higher base speed than the others. Named mounts are distinguished by other traits, so choose them for those traits rather than assuming they are speed upgrades. See the UESP horses reference.
- Frost: described as having greater stamina, which concerns endurance rather than demonstrated top speed.
- Shadowmere: described as particularly durable; durability does not establish a faster gallop.
- Arvak: a summonable Dawnguard mount, useful for convenience rather than a documented speed advantage.
Endurance options and speed-changing mods
| Option | What it offers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Hold the gallop control | Immediate galloping; the original PC manual specifies Left Alt. | A permanent base-speed increase. |
| Named vanilla horse | Traits such as stamina, durability, or summoning convenience. | A faster base speed than other horses. |
| Dwarven Horse Creation | The UESP Dwarven Horse entry describes it as able to sprint indefinitely. | Higher top speed; current availability was not established, so check the in-game Creations catalog. |
| Immersive Horses mod | The mod listing advertises changes to horse speed and gait progression, including faster, longer gallops than vanilla. | Compatibility with every platform, game version, or mod setup. Verify requirements for your installation. |
If you want a different gallop experience rather than simply using the built-in control, Immersive Horses is a Skyrim Special Edition mod option. Check its listing and your setup’s compatibility before installing.
