Format the external drive as FAT32, give it one partition, then connect it directly to the PS3. Drives formatted as NTFS or exFAT generally will not be recognized. Back up the drive’s contents first: formatting erases them. Once connected, open the matching XMB category—Photo, Music, Video, or Game—to find the drive.
What an external hard drive can do with a PS3
A compatible USB drive works as removable storage. You can browse supported music, photos, and videos; copy eligible saved data; or use the PS3’s Backup Utility to back up system data. It does not act as an extension of the console’s internal game drive, and you should not expect to install and play PS3 games directly from it.
FAT32 is the practical format for an external hard drive. Sony’s external-storage guidance identifies FAT32 as supported and says NTFS and Unix-type formats are not supported. Sony also says external storage must be formatted on a computer and that multiple partitions are not supported. FAT16 may be usable for some removable media, but FAT32 is the sensible choice for a hard drive.

A drive can have plenty of free space and still refuse a single video or other file that exceeds that limit.

Before you format
- Copy anything you want to keep from the external drive to another location. Formatting erases the selected drive.
- Check the drive’s capacity and name carefully, and disconnect other removable drives if possible so you do not erase the wrong disk.
- Prepare one partition only. If the drive has several partitions, remove them and create a single primary partition before formatting.
- Use the computer to format the external drive. Do not choose the PS3’s internal-storage Format Utility for this job; Sony warns that formatting storage deletes data and cannot be undone.
Format the drive on a computer
Windows
- Open Disk Management and identify the external disk by its capacity and existing volume labels. Be certain it is the external drive, not your Windows system disk.
- If it has multiple partitions, delete the partitions on that external disk and create one primary partition using the full space you want to use. Deleting partitions erases their contents.
- Format the new volume as FAT32. Many recent Windows versions do not offer FAT32 formatting for larger disks through the standard File Explorer interface, so you may need a reputable FAT32-capable formatter. Choose a tool carefully; do not download a formatter from an untrusted source.
- When finished, check the volume’s properties to confirm the file system is FAT32 and that the disk has only one partition.
If Windows offers only NTFS or exFAT for the size of your volume, selecting either will not solve PS3 compatibility. Use a suitable FAT32 formatting method instead.
macOS
- Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices if the physical drive is not visible in the sidebar.
- Select the external physical drive—not your Mac’s internal disk—and click Erase. This removes its contents.
- Choose MS-DOS (FAT) as the format and a compatible partition scheme. If the disk contains unwanted partitions, erase or repartition it so the result is one volume.
- Afterward, verify that it is a single FAT32 volume before connecting it to the PS3.
Drive Utility labels and available options can vary by macOS release. The essential result is one FAT32 volume, not an exFAT volume.

Connect it and find it in the PS3 menus
- Turn on the PS3 and connect the prepared drive directly to a USB port. For initial testing, avoid a USB hub or extension cable.
- For media, open the corresponding XMB category: Photo, Music, or Video.
- Highlight USB Device or the drive’s displayed name and open it. If the expected folders or files are hidden, press Triangle and choose Display All. Menu wording may vary slightly with system software.
Use the proper category for the type of file you want to view, and remember that the PS3 must also support the file’s media format. A recognized drive does not guarantee that every file on it can be played.
Copy saved games to the drive
- On the XMB, open Game > Saved Data Utility (PS3).
- Highlight the save you want to copy, press Triangle, and choose Copy.
- Select the USB storage device as the destination.
Some saved data is copy-protected or otherwise cannot be copied to removable storage. Sony’s saved-data copying guide describes this limitation. A USB copy of eligible saves is not the same thing as a full-console backup.

Make a full PS3 backup
- Connect the FAT32 drive.
- Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility > Back Up.
- Select the USB storage device and follow the on-screen steps.
The PS3 creates the backup folders automatically at PS3/EXPORT/BACKUP. Do not rename or move the backup folders or files if you may need to restore them. Sony’s Backup Utility guide notes that trophies are not included; synchronize trophies with PlayStation Network separately. Some protected content, including certain saved data and copyright-protected video, may not transfer or restore normally, so a system backup should not be treated as a guarantee that every item will come back.
If the PS3 does not recognize the drive
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the format. On a computer, check that the volume is FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT.
- Check the partition layout. The drive should contain one partition, not several.
- Reseat the connection. Try another PS3 USB port and connect the drive directly, without a hub or extension.
- Test the drive on a computer. If the computer also cannot read it, check the cable, enclosure, and disk before troubleshooting the PS3 further.
- Test with another known-good FAT32 drive. If that works, the first drive, its enclosure, or its power arrangement is the likelier problem. If neither works, check the console’s USB ports.
- Consider power. A portable drive draws power through its USB cable and may fail to start reliably if the cable, enclosure, or available power is marginal. A properly powered drive can help distinguish a power issue from a formatting issue.
The drive appears, but files are missing
Open the matching Photo, Music, or Video category, highlight the device, then try Triangle > Display All. Confirm the files are in a format the PS3 supports and that they are actually on the FAT32 volume. Test with a small, ordinary file before copying a large library.

A large file will not copy
If the file is over 4 GB, this is likely FAT32’s per-file limit rather than a defective drive. Split or re-encode the file into smaller parts, use a smaller compatible file, or choose a transfer method that does not require placing that oversized file on the FAT32 drive.
Choosing a drive for an older console
For a basic backup or media library, choose a reliable drive that can be erased and reformatted, rather than buying for a claimed maximum capacity. The Sony material cited here does not establish one universal external-drive capacity ceiling for every PS3 model and software combination, so very large drives should not be assumed to work just because they connect by USB.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
A portable hard drive is convenient and usually USB-powered, but it can be more sensitive to a poor cable or marginal power. A desktop drive generally has its own power supply and is less convenient to place beside the console. A conventional HDD is usually the practical value choice; an SSD can be quieter and more durable, but it does not bypass the FAT32 or interface limits.
Sony specifies Hi-Speed USB / USB 2.0 ports in its PS3 hardware documentation. A newer USB 3.x drive may connect backward-compatibly, but the PS3 remains a USB 2.0 device; a faster-rated drive does not give the console USB 3 transfer speeds. Compatibility still depends on the drive, enclosure, power, and partition layout.
If your goal is more space for installed games, an external USB drive is the wrong route. The relevant option is replacing the PS3’s internal 2.5-inch Serial ATA drive, following the instructions for your specific console model. Back up important data first and do not confuse that internal-drive procedure with formatting an external disk.
