Do not rely on one stream to preserve every replay: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
Choose how the channel will stay live
YouTube supports live streams from an encoder, as well as webcam streaming. A continuous prerecorded-video channel usually needs an encoder or cloud service that can keep sending the feed; YouTube Studio schedules and manages the broadcast but does not itself supply the videos or guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 feed.
Plan continuity separately from programming. Decide what plays if the primary source or connection fails, how you will restart a dropped stream, who will monitor it, and how you will preserve recordings. YouTube recommends testing failover when using a backup encoder; that test reduces operational risk but is not an uptime guarantee.
Set up and schedule the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream. In Live Control Room, schedule the broadcast or create a stream for immediate setup. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming so viewers can opt into notifications.
- Configure the stream details and settings. Add an accurate title, description, audience and other relevant metadata. If you reuse a previous stream, review everything before going live: reuse copies its metadata, settings and stream key, and you can edit these after creation.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it. If it is compromised, reset it in Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Studio preview. Confirm the intended video and audio appear correctly. Check stream health, then start the broadcast when ready.
- Confirm the public watch page. Open it on desktop and mobile, verify playback and sound, and make sure the scheduled stream is visible as expected.
For specific encoder bitrate, resolution and keyframe values, follow YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution and encoder; those values are not one-size-fits-all and depend on the stream configuration. Do not assume that a reused stream’s key or settings are appropriate for a new production.

Keep the video schedule and recovery plan practical
Build a playlist or playback schedule that can run continuously, and decide what viewers should see during transitions, source failures or maintenance. For an encoder workflow, test the actual restart process in advance: stopping and restarting the encoder, restoring a dropped connection, and switching to a backup source if you have one. If you enable auto-start or auto-stop, test how those controls behave with your encoder and scheduled streams rather than assuming they will recover every failure.

Do not leave the same stream running indefinitely just to preserve a single watch page. The archive and DVR limits make a long-running broadcast a poor substitute for planned segments, local recording and a recovery procedure.
Operate the stream with a checklist
- Before going live: Confirm the encoder is configured, the correct key is in use, and the video and audio are present in preview.
- Check the connection: Ensure available upload capacity exceeds the stream’s required bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the required bitrate to allow for network variation.
- Test continuity: Exercise your restart and backup-encoder procedure before relying on it. Check that the replacement feed reaches Studio preview.
- Monitor the broadcast: Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and check audio and video periodically. A stream can appear connected while suffering from an audio, image or network problem.
- Verify the audience view: Check the watch page, including on a mobile device, rather than relying only on the encoder’s local preview.
- Protect the recording: If an archive matters, record locally and confirm the local file is growing while the stream is active.
- Review performance: Live Control Room can show real-time metrics. For computer/encoder streams, available figures can include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views and average view duration; metrics vary by streaming method.

Plan around archive and DVR limits
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and appear on the Live tab in Studio. It warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable archive of everything it played.
DVR is a separate viewer feature: YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Even if viewers can watch the live feed, they may not be able to rewind through the full broadcast. Keep local recordings if you need a reliable copy, and plan how to split programming or publish saved recordings if replay access is important.

YouTube supports software encoders and webcam streaming; it recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Consider a hardware video encoder for YouTube Live only when its production workflow fits your needs, not because continuous streaming inherently requires one.
