Add storage if you want to keep more games installed—but check whether a drive can only store a game or can also run it. That distinction matters especially for Xbox Series X|S optimized games.
Manage Game Pass downloads on Windows PC
On PC, the Xbox app’s game-management controls are the place to look for an installed game’s options. Microsoft announced move and repair controls through the app’s Manage option in 2021, initially for Insiders; a current third-party support guide also describes a Manage workflow. Labels and availability can differ by app version, so use the options shown for the game on your PC.
- Open the Xbox app and find the installed game in your library.
- Open the game’s Manage options. If a Move control is available, choose it and select the destination drive.
- To remove the game instead, choose its uninstall option and confirm. Check the game’s own management options before removing it if you need to preserve local data.
For a new PC install, select a different available drive when the app offers an install-location choice. Microsoft Community guidance describes choosing another drive for new installs and moving existing games through Manage Installs, but it is community advice rather than official product documentation: Where does the Xbox app install games? Microsoft’s 2021 announcement explains the original Insider rollout of moving and repairing games: Xbox Wire announcement. A current-style Manage walkthrough is available from Dovetail Games Support.
Manage downloads and installed games on an Xbox console
Use the console’s storage and game-library management controls to review installed games, remove titles, or manage where supported. Because console firmware and menu wording can change, follow the current labels displayed on your system rather than relying on a fixed sequence of button presses from an older guide. For installation problems, Microsoft directs users to its support flow for troubleshooting apps and games: Trouble pushing an app or game to a device.

Can an external drive store and play Xbox games?
Storage and playback are separate capabilities. An external USB drive can expand the space available for a game library, but whether a particular title can launch from that drive depends on the game and console generation. TechRadar’s 2026 guide discusses external drives for Xbox Series storage and use with backward-compatible titles, but it is secondary guidance rather than an official compatibility matrix: Best Xbox Series X hard drives and SSDs in 2026.
For a Series X|S optimized game, do not assume that an ordinary external USB drive can run it. Check current official support for the specific storage device and title; if you need supported additional storage for Series X|S optimized play, look for a compatible expansion card or use the console’s internal storage. The sources available here do not establish a current, comprehensive list of compatible models or exact requirements.

Choose extra storage for your situation
- Need room to keep more games installed: Compare an external USB hard drive or SSD for capacity, connection, compatibility, and price. It can be useful for storing games you play less often, even when a title must be moved before launching.
- Need to play Series X|S optimized games from additional storage: Confirm that the specific device is supported for that use; do not buy based on capacity alone.
- Need more room on a PC: Check that the drive is available to your PC and appears as an install or move destination in the Xbox app. App behavior depends on the PC setup.
There is no single drive recommendation that fits every console, PC, game, and budget. Check the console or PC compatibility details and the intended use—storage, playback, or both—before purchasing.

Microsoft’s Xbox developer documentation says game-specific local storage can be console-specific and that associated local storage is removed when a title is uninstalled. This does not establish that cloud saves are available for every game or situation, so do not treat uninstalling as a guarantee that every kind of save data is backed up.
