You can manually install a CurseForge Minecraft mod by matching its Minecraft version and modloader to your game, installing that loader, and placing the mod’s .jar file—and any required dependencies—in the correct mods folder. Then launch Minecraft with the matching loader profile. The steps below cover Minecraft Java Edition; do not assume these file paths apply to other CurseForge games.
1. Check the mod’s Minecraft version and loader
On the mod’s CurseForge project page, open the specific file you want and check which Minecraft version and modloader it supports. Your game profile, mod file, and loader must be compatible. CurseForge lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt as loader options; a file built for one loader may not work with a profile using another. See CurseForge Support’s mod installation guide and its explanation of game and mod compatibility.
2. Install the matching modloader
Install the loader for the Minecraft version you intend to play before adding the mod. CurseForge’s manual guide includes instructions for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt; follow the installer’s directions for the loader you selected. The installer should create a profile or installation that you can select in the Minecraft Launcher.
3. Open the correct mods folder
For a standard Minecraft installation, open the game directory for your operating system and then open its mods folder. If the folder does not exist, create it.

~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. Open or createmods.
CurseForge app profiles may use a different game directory. The app creates a dedicated modding environment, so do not put a mod in the standard .minecraftmods folder unless that is the directory used by the profile you plan to launch. See CurseForge’s installation guide for the app’s documented game-directory locations.
4. Add the mod and its dependencies
Download the .jar file for the exact Minecraft version and loader you checked in step 1. Move it into the correct mods folder. If the mod page lists required libraries or other dependencies, download compatible versions of those files and put them in the same folder too. Examples named in CurseForge’s guide include Fabric API and GeckoLib; Fabric or Quilt mods may require Fabric API or Quilted Fabric API, respectively.
5. Launch the loader profile
Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the profile created by the loader installer, and click Play. A Mods button should appear on Minecraft’s main menu when the mod-loading setup has loaded correctly. Check that the intended mod is listed there.
If the mod does not load
- The profile is incompatible or the mod is missing: Recheck the Minecraft version and loader listed for the mod file against the profile you launched. Confirm you downloaded the file for that specific combination.
- The game reports a missing dependency: Return to the mod’s project page, identify the required library, and install a version compatible with the same Minecraft version and loader.
- The game will not start: Consult CurseForge’s Minecraft troubleshooting guidance. Java, installation problems, loader issues, and incompatibilities can all be relevant causes; use the guidance for the error you see.
- You cannot find the mod in the game: Check whether you launched a standard Minecraft profile or a CurseForge app profile, then confirm that the file is in that profile’s game directory rather than a different
modsfolder.
Manual installation or the CurseForge app?
Manual installation is useful when you want direct control of mod files or intend to manage the Minecraft Launcher profile yourself. You must choose the compatible loader and file, locate the profile’s game directory, and maintain required dependencies. The CurseForge app can detect game-version and loader requirements and install mods into a new or existing profile, reducing that manual setup. Keeping multiple mod setups in the default .minecraft folder can be less convenient; separate profiles or directories help keep them organized. See CurseForge’s custom-profile guide.
