How to Measure a PC’s Real Power Draw Before Pricing a 24/7 YouTube Stream

A plug-in meter, a representative streaming workload and your local electricity rate are the essentials for estimating 24/7 PC streaming costs.

Measure the computer’s AC input with a plug-in electricity meter while it runs the stream workload you actually plan to use. Use its accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh) over a representative interval to find average power, then calculate energy for your intended operating hours and multiply by your applicable electricity rate. A power-supply rating or a one-time watt reading cannot tell you what your PC will cost to run continuously.

What you need to measure

For a useful estimate, measure the real power drawn at the wall by the equipment you intend to include, under the workload and settings you intend to run. A PC’s power-supply rating describes its capacity, not its actual draw during streaming. The result depends on the computer and what it is doing; there is no single wattage that applies to every streaming PC.

Choose the measurement boundary

Decide whether you want the PC alone or the whole streaming setup. A plug-in meter only measures devices electrically downstream of it. If your estimate should include a monitor, router, capture hardware, audio equipment or lighting, measure those devices too—either in the same setup, if the meter and load ratings allow, or separately. Record what was included so you do not compare a PC-only reading with a full-setup reading.

Choose a meter for the job

Look for a plug-in electricity usage meter that reports true or real power in watts and accumulates energy in kWh, or can average readings over time. Check that it supports your local outlet and voltage and is rated for the intended computer and any attached devices. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and confirm its maximum current or wattage before connecting a load. A meter’s instantaneous watt figure is a snapshot when the computer’s demand is changing.

DOE FEMP’s summary of IEC 62301 gives examples of instrument resolution for low-power measurements: 0.01 W or better below 10 W, and 0.1 W or better above 10 W through 100 W. Those examples concern standby-power measurement; they are not a blanket specification for consumer meters measuring a PC under load. The U.S. EPA / ENERGY STAR computer procedure, Version 4.0, is a legacy test procedure, not the current certification rule. It provides an official example of AC-input measurement using a true-power-capable meter. See DOE FEMP’s measurement guidance and the EPA / ENERGY STAR Version 4.0 computer procedure.

Measure the PC under its real streaming workload

  1. Set up the measurement boundary. Plug the meter between the mains outlet and the equipment you decided to count. For a real household setup, follow the meter’s instructions and ratings. The EPA’s legacy laboratory procedure specifies direct connection of the test computer to its meter without a power strip or UPS in between; treat that as a test-protocol detail, not a substitute for your meter’s guidance.
  2. Run the intended workload. Use the streaming software, output settings, encoder, scene, game or media, and other conditions you expect to use. Include peripherals that belong within your chosen boundary. If boot-up or one-off background activity is not part of the normal stream, let it settle before measuring. Note the settings and whether a display or other devices were included.
  3. Measure across a representative interval. If demand fluctuates, record accumulated kWh and elapsed time, then calculate average power. Alternatively, use a meter that reports average watts. DOE FEMP’s summary of IEC 62301 says stable power varies by less than 5% from the mean over five minutes; otherwise, it recommends measuring energy over a period and dividing by that period. This is a useful measurement cue drawn from standby-power guidance, not a guarantee that five minutes characterizes every stream.
  4. Keep a record. Write down average watts, accumulated kWh, observation duration, date, measured equipment, and workload/settings. If you stream different games, scenes or configurations, measure them separately and label each result.

For the underlying averaging principle, DOE FEMP states: “If power consumption fluctuates, energy consumption should be measured over a period of time and then divided by the measurement period to determine average power.” Read the full DOE FEMP guidance.

Calculate electricity use and cost

Convert average watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000. Multiply by operating hours to get kWh, then multiply the kWh by the electricity price per kWh that applies to your bill:

kWh = (average W ÷ 1,000) × hours

Estimated energy cost = kWh × your applicable price per kWh

DOE-hosted educational material expresses the energy relationship as “kWh = kW x hrs” and advises using the local electricity price. A bill with tiered rates, time-of-use periods, fixed charges, taxes or other adjustments may not be captured by a single per-kWh figure, so treat the result as an estimate. See DOE’s “Watt Does It Cost to Use It?”.

  • For average draw W watts over H hours: energy is (W ÷ 1,000) × H kWh.
  • At an applicable rate of R per kWh: estimated cost is (W ÷ 1,000) × H × R.

Estimate a continuous year

A continuous schedule for an ordinary 365-day year is 8,760 hours (24 × 365). That is calendar arithmetic, not a measurement or an assumption about any computer’s wattage. At average draw W watts, annual energy is W × 8.76 kWh. Multiply by your applicable rate for an energy-cost estimate. For a leap year, downtime or a schedule shorter than 24/7, use the actual operating-hour total instead.

ENERGY STAR’s Computers page covers desktops, integrated desktops, notebooks, tablets, thin clients and workstations, and identifies an effective date of October 2025 for its criteria. Certification efficiency criteria and controlled idle measurements do not establish what an individual PC draws during a live stream; measure your own configuration.

Troubleshoot an unexpected result

  • The reading jumps around: Streaming load can change as CPU, GPU and encoding work changes. Use accumulated kWh across a representative interval and divide by elapsed hours, or use the meter’s average-power function.
  • The reading seems too low: Check whether the meter is measuring the intended device and whether your chosen boundary omitted the monitor, router or other equipment. Confirm that the meter reports real power in watts and is appropriate for the load.
  • Your estimate differs from the bill: Verify the operating hours and applicable rate. Tiered or time-of-use pricing, fixed charges, taxes and other adjustments can make a simple energy calculation differ from the bill total.
  • You are comparing two setups: Repeat the measurement with the same stream workload, settings, duration and equipment boundary. Keep peak readings separate from averages.
