Use a plug-in electricity meter between the wall outlet and your PC, then measure the computer while it plays the YouTube video or playlist and settings you actually plan to use. For a full-day result, record the meter’s accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh) over 24 hours. A power-supply rating is not your PC’s real-world draw, and CPU or GPU software readings do not show the whole computer’s wall-side consumption.
What you need to measure
A plug-in electricity usage meter, also called a watt meter, measures the AC power drawn by equipment connected through it. Choose one suited to your local outlet and the electrical rating of the PC. Check whether it shows instantaneous watts, accumulated kWh, and—if you want to see changes over time—a logged history. No specific meter model is established here, so compare those features and the meter’s electrical rating rather than relying on a model recommendation.
For a tower-only reading, connect the meter between the wall and the PC’s main power cable. Keep unrelated equipment off that measurement. A separately powered monitor is not included; measure it separately if you want the combined computer-and-display total.
Measure a full day of YouTube playback
- Set the measurement boundary. Decide whether you want the tower alone or the tower plus display and peripherals. Start with the tower alone if your aim is to isolate PC consumption.
- Connect the meter. Plug the meter into the wall outlet, then plug the PC’s main AC power cable into the meter. Follow the meter’s instructions and do not exceed its electrical rating.
- Reproduce your intended setup. Start the YouTube video or playlist and use the resolution, browser, monitor, brightness, and power settings you expect to use. Note any playback interruptions, sleep behavior, or playback stops during the test.
- Run it for 24 hours. Record the starting and ending cumulative energy readings, or the cumulative kWh after 24 hours. A full-day reading captures fluctuations better than a single glance at instantaneous watts.
- Calculate average watts if useful. Use
average watts = (kWh × 1000) ÷ hours. For example, divide the measured 24-hour kWh total by 24 hours after converting kWh to watt-hours: equivalently, multiply the kWh total by 1000 and divide by 24. This is a formula, not a predicted PC result. - Measure the display separately if needed. Repeat the run with the monitor connected through the meter under the same display conditions. Add the monitor’s kWh to the tower’s kWh for the combined total. Include separately powered speakers or peripherals only if you want them counted.
Watts, kWh, and what the number means
Watts describe power at a moment or averaged over a period. Kilowatt-hours describe energy accumulated over time. Because a PC’s draw changes with its workload and settings, the 24-hour kWh total is usually the most useful figure for estimating a day’s electricity use.

To estimate the electricity charge, multiply the measured kWh by your applicable electricity rate. The rate varies by location and plan, so there is no universal cost figure.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program gives this general guidance for fluctuating power: “If power consumption fluctuates, energy consumption should be measured over a period of time and then divided by the measurement period to determine average power.” Its page discusses standby and low-power measurements, not a YouTube-specific test protocol. It also says a stable reading can be taken directly from a meter when variation is less than 5% from the mean over five minutes.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Why software readings and PSU ratings are not enough
Hardware-monitoring software may show selected component readings, such as CPU package power or GPU power. Those figures can help explain changes in a workload, but they are not a complete measurement of mains draw: they do not account for every component or power-supply losses, and they do not include a separately powered monitor. Treat them as component telemetry, not whole-system AC consumption.
A power supply’s rated wattage describes its capacity, not how much electricity the PC uses during YouTube playback. For actual wall-side draw, use the plug-in meter.

Make comparisons meaningful
There is no reliable universal wattage for a PC streaming YouTube continuously. Measure your own machine and record enough detail to make the result interpretable. If you compare two runs, keep these conditions aligned:
- PC hardware and playback state.
- Video resolution and browser/player settings.
- Display, brightness, and power mode.
- Measurement boundary: tower only, or tower plus display and peripherals.
- Measurement duration and whether the result is average watts or accumulated kWh.
A television or whole-house figure cannot stand in for your PC. Fraunhofer FOKUS / Video-Dev describes a field test using meters between a device and wall socket, with readings reported every second, but the tested devices were televisions, not desktop PCs. Its account reports average consumption of 117.4 W for tested TVs over 50 inches and 55.9 W for tested TVs of 50 inches or smaller; it also reports an average Eco Mode reduction of around 37% across its tested display technologies. These are findings from that television sample, not PC estimates or guaranteed savings.

The International Energy Agency’s 2020 analysis estimated 0.077 kWh per hour for a Netflix viewing scenario based on 2019 assumptions. That estimate is not a measurement of YouTube playback on a PC and may account for more than the local device. A meter on your PC measures only the equipment connected through it. Ericsson’s household summary reports an estimate of 1,230 kWh for all electronic devices in one measured household; that single household is not a typical-household benchmark.

- The reading seems much lower than expected: Check that the PC—not only a monitor, dock, or peripheral—is connected through the meter, and confirm the meter is showing watts or accumulated energy in the units you think it is.
- The meter shows a changing watt figure: That is normal when power fluctuates. Use the accumulated kWh over the 24-hour run and divide by elapsed time if you need average watts.
- The total seems to omit the display: A tower-only meter reading excludes a separately powered monitor. Measure it separately under the same conditions and add the energy totals.
- The playback stopped or the PC slept: Record the interruption and check sleep and playback settings. The result represents the run as it occurred; repeat the measurement if that does not match the 24/7 setup you want to understand.
- Two readings are hard to compare: Check that the workload, resolution, browser, display settings, meter boundary, units, and duration match.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the reason you are measuring is to understand the cost of keeping a YouTube channel live from your own PC, a cloud service is a different option: the computer at home does not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
