You can mod some games installed through the Epic Games Store, but Epic does not provide a universal mod manager or troubleshoot mods for games in your library. Whether a mod works depends on the specific game, its Epic edition, the mod’s requirements, and the game’s current version. Check those details before installing anything, back up your saves, and follow the game or mod author’s instructions rather than assuming every mod belongs in the same folder.
Can you mod games from the Epic Games Store?
Yes, if the individual game and the mod support the combination you have. Epic is the storefront and launcher; it is not a universal mod platform. Epic says it does not support or troubleshoot mods for games in your library and directs players to the game’s support team: Epic Games support on mods.
That is not a blanket ban on mods. Some games offer an in-game mod browser, official mod kit, dedicated loader, or support for community-made files. Others do not support modding. Even when a game is moddable, its Epic edition may differ from Steam or GOG editions in its executable, patch version, files, or launcher behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the game: Look for official modding documentation, support pages, or a built-in mod system.
- Check the mod: Confirm that its author lists your game version and the Epic edition. If only Steam is listed, Epic compatibility is unverified.
- Check the method: Confirm that any loader, manager, launcher, and dependencies work with the Epic executable and current game version.
Do not assume that a Steam Workshop mod, Steam launch parameter, or Steam-specific loader will work with an Epic copy.

What to check before installing
Read the mod’s full description and documentation before downloading. Identify the exact game and edition, current version, operating system, and whether you intend to play offline or online. Look for prerequisites, required DLC, load order, conflicts, installation and removal instructions, and whether the mod changes saves or achievements.
- Back up saves separately from game files. A clean game installation does not restore progress if a save becomes incompatible. Keep a copy outside the game’s save folder, and consider separate saves for modded and unmodded play.
- Keep a record of changes. Save the mod archive, note its version and installation location, and record dependencies and load order. This makes rollback and troubleshooting easier.
- Install dependencies in the stated order. A script extender, loader, framework, library, or runtime may be required. Use the source specified by its author; avoid unverified “all-in-one” runtime downloads.
- Plan for updates. Game patches can break loaders, version checks, or modified files. Check the mod and dependency pages before updating or opening a modded save in a newly updated game.
Find the Epic game’s installation folder
There is no guaranteed single location: you may have chosen another drive or folder during installation. A path such as C:Program FilesEpic GamesGameName is only an example.
- In the Epic Games Launcher Library, open the game’s options and look for its installation location.
- If you use a desktop shortcut, inspect its properties and check the target path.
- Search Windows for the game’s executable, then confirm that the folder belongs to the Epic installation.
- If a supported mod manager detects the game, check its reported path before deploying anything.
Vortex’s developer documentation explains that detecting Epic installations can involve Epic Launcher manifests and that Epic does not provide a centralized public game-codename database: Vortex documentation on game detection. Detection is not proof that every mod for the game supports the Epic edition.

Understand what kind of mod you are installing
Installation depends on the mod’s format and the game. Do not assume all mods go in the game’s main folder.

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Loose-file replacements: Textures, configuration files, audio, interface assets, or models may be copied into a specified directory, sometimes replacing existing files. Preserve originals if the instructions do not provide another rollback method.
- Plugins: Game-specific plugin files may need a load-order manager, framework, script extender, or separate launcher. Install and launch them exactly as their documentation specifies.
- Loader-based mods: These require a framework or loader that may alter startup behavior or load code at runtime. Confirm that the loader supports the Epic executable and the game’s current version.
- Unreal Engine package mods: Some games use packaged assets such as
.pakfiles, but folder paths, naming rules, loaders, and compatibility are title-specific. Do not apply a generic Unreal folder path unless that game’s instructions say to. - Official editors or mod kits: These are separate development workflows and may require a particular engine version, SDK, project, or packaging process. They do not necessarily allow edits to every packaged commercial game.
Install a mod manually
Manual installation can make sense for a small, clearly documented mod or when its author requires it. The exact destination and extraction level must come from that mod’s instructions.
- Download from the source identified by the author. Check the author, requirements, comments, supported versions, and permissions; a well-known host does not guarantee that every file is safe.
- Scan the download with current security software. Treat unexpected executables, password-protected archives from unknown sources, and files unrelated to the mod’s stated purpose with caution.
- Read the included documentation before extracting. An archive might contain a wrapper folder such as
ModNameReadme.txtandModNameData, or it might contain the destination folders directly. Copying the wrong level can leave files in the wrong place. - Back up saves and any original files that will be replaced. Keep the backup outside the game folder so a launcher repair or reinstall is less likely to affect it.
- Copy or extract only the specified files to the documented location in the Epic installation, preserving the stated folder structure. Do not replace the game executable unless the mod documentation explicitly requires it and you have verified the instructions.
- Launch and test as directed, preferably on a separate save. Note what changed so you can remove the files or restore originals later.
For removal, follow the mod author’s uninstall instructions. Do not delete unfamiliar files based only on their names.
Use Vortex when the game and mod support it
Vortex is Nexus Mods’ mod manager for Windows. Its current game coverage changes, so check the Vortex page and supported-game information before choosing it. Vortex offers mod installation and management features, but it cannot make an unsupported game, loader, or mod compatible. A game may be detected even though a particular mod still requires manual installation.
- Install the game and launch it once, then close it. Vortex’s getting-started guidance recommends this before detection: Vortex getting-started guide.
- Download Vortex from the official Vortex download page and install it. Sign in to Nexus Mods if needed for the download method you want to use.
- Open Vortex and check its Games view. If the game appears, confirm the detected Epic installation folder rather than accepting an uncertain path.
- Use “Mod Manager Download” when the mod page offers it and the author supports that method. Otherwise, import an archive only if the author’s instructions permit it.
- Install required dependencies, enable the mod, and deploy it if Vortex requests deployment. Check any reported conflicts or load-order requirements.
- Launch the game using the method its mod or loader documentation recommends. Starting the game through Vortex is not a universal requirement.
A successful deployment only means the manager placed files as configured. It does not confirm that the mod supports the Epic edition, that a required loader works, or that the game’s update has not broken it. For Vortex’s project and current feature information, see the Vortex repository.

When another modding method is a better fit
| Situation | Good starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One small, documented cosmetic mod | Manual installation | There may be few files or moving parts to manage. |
| Many mods for a supported game | Vortex or a recognized game-specific manager | Profiles, deployment, and conflict tools can make a larger setup easier to manage. |
| Plugins, custom load order, or a required loader | The game community’s established manager or the loader author’s instructions | Generic managers may not handle the format or startup process correctly. |
| The game provides an in-game mod browser | The game’s built-in system | It is the game’s own integration; check its rules and available content. |
| The developer supplies a mod kit | The official kit and its documentation | Its editor and packaging steps are designed for that title. |
| Online play or anti-cheat is involved | Do not install mods unless the developer explicitly permits them | Unauthorized changes can block connection or risk account action. |
| The mod does not list the Epic edition | Ask the author or treat support as unverified | Storefront versions can differ in files, executables, or update timing. |
| Linux, SteamOS, or a compatibility layer | Title-specific support information | Windows tools and loaders may not work in that environment. |
Modding Unreal Engine games and creating mods
Owning an Unreal Engine game does not mean it includes an editor or exposes editable project files. Use an official SDK, editor, or mod kit if the developer provides one; otherwise, follow that game’s specific modding documentation. Generic Unreal Engine instructions cannot establish a correct path or method for every title.
For creators with an appropriate Unreal project or mod kit, Epic’s Launcher can install and manage Unreal Engine versions. Epic documents the route as opening the Launcher, selecting Unreal Engine, opening Library, adding an engine version with the plus button, selecting a version, and choosing Install: Install Unreal Engine. Match the engine version to the project or kit.
Epic documents acquiring Unreal Engine plugins through Fab or the Launcher’s Fab section, then installing them to compatible engine versions through the Fab Library. Plugin availability and licensing vary by product: Working with plugins in Unreal Engine. Installing an engine or plugin does not provide tools to modify a game that lacks an authorized modding workflow. Epic also notes that console packaging requires a source-code build rather than the precompiled Launcher build in its engine installation documentation.

Troubleshoot a mod that fails
The mod has no visible effect
- Recheck the destination path and whether the archive was extracted one folder too deep.
- Confirm that the mod is enabled and deployed if you use a manager.
- Check the game and mod versions, required dependencies, and whether the mod lists Epic support.
- Confirm that you are starting the Epic executable the mod expects, rather than a different shortcut or edition.
- Test with only the required framework and the one mod installed. Check the mod’s logs or support page if it creates them.
The game crashes at startup
- Disable all mods and see whether the unmodded game launches.
- If it does, re-enable the required framework, then add mods one at a time or in small groups.
- Check for a missing dependency, incompatible version, conflict, incorrect load order, or loader problem. Do not try to bypass anti-cheat.
- If the clean game also crashes, verify the game files through Epic and consult the game’s support team.
An update broke a working mod
A patch can replace edited files, change the executable or package format, invalidate a version check, or break a loader. Check the mod and dependency pages before updating or reopening a modded save. If the game has already updated, disable affected mods and wait for compatible updates rather than forcing an old loader to run.
Recover the game and saves
- Disable the most recently added mod or dependency and restore backups where available.
- Remove files according to the mod’s uninstall instructions. If using a manager, disable the mod and rebuild or clear deployment through that manager’s documented controls.
- Use the Epic Launcher’s verification option for the game if original game files may be missing or changed. Verification is a repair step, not a guaranteed mod uninstaller: external, generated, or manager-deployed files may remain.
- Start without mods and test a backup or last known-good save. If the game launches but the save does not, the problem may be save compatibility rather than damaged game files.
- Reinstall only the mods and dependencies confirmed to work together, one at a time.
For Epic’s verification guidance in its Unreal Engine installation documentation, see Install Unreal Engine.
Safety, online play, and permissions
Use the author’s stated download source, inspect requirements and permissions, scan files, and keep Windows and security software current. Avoid unrelated “unlockers,” cracked files, or executable patches whose purpose is unclear. Do not replace protected files or attempt to bypass DRM, access controls, or anti-cheat.
For multiplayer games or games with anti-cheat, assume that mods are not safe to use online unless the developer explicitly permits them. Even cosmetic changes can violate a game’s rules or trigger connection problems; permission for offline or private play does not necessarily imply permission on public servers. Do not use undocumented workarounds to evade protections.
Achievement behavior is also game-specific: some games disable achievements when mods are active, while others handle them differently. Check current game and mod documentation before relying on achievements, and do not assume an achievement-enabler is permitted.
A mod may include the creator’s own work as well as game or third-party assets, music, trademarks, or code. Follow the mod author’s permissions and the publisher’s rules. Epic’s EULA sets out creator obligations in contexts where Mods are submitted; it does not grant blanket permission to redistribute another party’s material.
Quick Recap
Keep a stable modded setup
- Install one mod at a time and test before adding the next.
- Keep separate backups of game files and saves, plus a written mod and dependency list.
- Use manager profiles where supported, and keep modded and unmodded saves separate.
- Check compatibility notes before updating the game, loader, or framework.
- When a problem appears, remove the newest change first and test the clean game before rebuilding the full setup.
