You can also choose manual live-ad insertion and place no mid-roll breaks. That does not make a monetized stream ad-free: YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live-stream monetization is on.
What “no ad breaks” means on YouTube Live
YouTube provides a control for mid-roll ads—the ads inserted during a live stream. In manual mode, if you do not insert any ad breaks, YouTube says no mid-roll ads are served. That setting does not disable every kind of advertising. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when monetization is turned on for a live stream, so do not promise viewers that a monetized stream will have no ads at all.
Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, either. The setting controls whether you place mid-roll opportunities; it does not guarantee that an ad will appear to every viewer or eliminate the pre-roll and display formats.
Check whether your channel can offer memberships
Channel memberships let eligible viewers make monthly payments in exchange for creator-provided perks, such as badges, emoji, or other goods. Availability and feature rules depend on the channel and region. YouTube’s current overview lists the following lower entry threshold for memberships:

- At least 3 public uploads in the past 90 days.
- Either 3,000 eligible public watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million eligible Shorts views in the past 90 days.
Meeting these numbers does not by itself guarantee access; check the feature’s eligibility in YouTube Studio. The higher tier for ad revenue sharing has a different threshold: 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 eligible public watch hours in 365 days or 10 million eligible Shorts views in 90 days. Set up memberships as a sustainable offer
- Confirm feature access. In YouTube Studio, review your channel’s Earn or monetization area and check whether memberships are available. Follow the on-screen eligibility and setup prompts.
- Accept the fan-funding terms. YouTube requires creators to accept the Commerce Product Module for fan-funding features, or to be covered by the earlier Commerce Product Addendum where applicable. Memberships and watch-page ad or Premium revenue have separate terms: watch-page revenue requires the Watch Page Monetization Module, subject to applicable earlier terms.
- Turn memberships on and configure the offer. Use the membership setup flow in Studio to define the levels and perks available to your channel. YouTube’s policy defines memberships as monthly payments for perks, but does not prescribe a particular price, perk, or likely conversion rate.
- Make the recurring promise manageable. Choose a small set of benefits you can deliver reliably. Explain what members receive and how often you will provide it; avoid promising frequent personal attention or a schedule you cannot sustain while running a continuous stream.
- Tell viewers how to join. Explain the membership option and its perks in the stream description, pinned chat message, or other channel surfaces you use. Keep the wording accurate about what is members-only and what remains available to everyone.
YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies explain the applicable fan-funding rules. Memberships are recurring only while viewers choose to remain members; they are not guaranteed income.

Choose live-ad settings without mid-roll breaks
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the stream and configure monetization for it. YouTube’s instructions are in Monetize your live stream.
- Choose manual mid-roll insertion rather than automatic or scheduled mid-rolls if your priority is to have no mid-roll breaks.
- Do not insert any ad breaks. YouTube says manual mode serves no mid-roll ads when no breaks are inserted.
- Review the stream’s other ad formats. Pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is turned on. Manual mid-roll control does not switch those formats off.
YouTube also offers scheduled mid-roll intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes, and an automatic option. If you want fewer interruptions while retaining potential ad revenue, YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and provides controls such as delaying automatic ads for ten minutes. That is a different strategy: it is not a no-mid-roll setup, and manual breaks still display while the delay control is on. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024 for creators who selected automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that had not turned them on. The comparison was averaged across 207 countries. It is YouTube’s comparison of ad revenue, not a forecast for an individual channel or evidence about membership earnings.

Account for stream format
YouTube’s live-stream feature comparison lists memberships and gifted memberships for both horizontal and vertical live streams, while listing pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal streams only. Feature availability can still depend on channel and regional eligibility. Check YouTube’s live streaming feature comparison for the format you plan to use.
Balance memberships, ads, and other fan funding

A memberships-first approach can suit a stream where predictable viewing matters more than inserting mid-rolls, but it depends on viewers valuing the perks. Ads can provide another revenue route, but disabling mid-roll insertion does not disable all ads. The two routes have distinct eligibility and terms; neither guarantees a particular amount of income.

Keep a continuous stream running
A 24/7 stream also needs a playback source that remains available. YouTube’s live-stream setup and monetization instructions cover Studio settings and ad controls; they do not require buying a particular encoder or other hardware to enable memberships. If you run your own playback setup, verify that the stream stays connected and that your uploaded material is authorized for continuous use. Memberships do not change YouTube’s copyright rules or guarantee that reused content will qualify for monetization.

Troubleshoot the common setup problems
- Memberships do not appear in Studio: Check the channel’s eligibility and region availability, then confirm that the required Commerce Product terms have been accepted. Reaching the subscriber and viewing thresholds alone does not establish access.
- Viewers report a mid-roll despite your intention to avoid breaks: Reopen the Live Control Room settings and confirm the stream is using manual mid-roll insertion, with no breaks inserted. If automatic or scheduled mid-rolls are selected, those settings do not match a no-mid-roll plan.
- Viewers still see ads: No mid-rolls is not the same as no ads. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is on.
- Memberships are enabled but do not replace ad revenue: Memberships are a separate fan-funding feature with monthly payments for perks. Watch-page ad and Premium revenue have separate terms and eligibility.
- A vertical stream lacks the ad formats you expected: YouTube’s comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal live streams only, while listing memberships for horizontal and vertical formats.
