But personalized ads and several fan-funding or shopping features are unavailable or restricted. First classify the content accurately; monetization goals do not determine whether a video is Made for Kids.
First, understand what “Made for Kids” means
YouTube requires creators, wherever they live, to identify whether their channel or videos are Made for Kids. That is an audience designation, not another name for the YouTube Kids viewing app. A video that children happen to watch is not automatically child-directed; the decision depends on the content and its intended audience.
YouTube says content may be Made for Kids when children are its primary audience or when other factors indicate it is directed to children. For a gaming channel, consider the whole presentation: the game and subject matter, language, visuals and audio, characters, activities, intended audience, and other context. A game featuring animation or bright colors does not, by itself, settle the question.
The FTC’s U.S. guidance identifies factors such as subject matter, visual and audio content, animated characters or child-oriented activities, the age of people shown, language, intended audience, advertising, and empirical evidence about audience composition. Set the audience at the right level
You can set an audience for a channel or designate individual videos. If only some uploads are child-directed, video-level settings may better reflect the channel’s actual content. Review the audience setting when your format or intended audience changes. YouTube explains the available choices and setup in its audience-setting instructions.
Why this decision also matters for privacy
In the United States, COPPA may apply to creators of child-directed content on a third-party platform if the creator, or someone acting for them, collects personal information from viewers. The FTC gives persistent identifiers used for targeted advertising as an example and describes notice and verifiable parental-consent obligations for covered operators. This U.S. guidance does not determine an individual creator’s legal obligations, or the rules that apply in other countries. Which YouTube revenue routes are available?
For an eligible channel, the central YouTube revenue routes to consider are ads and YouTube Premium viewing. Other YPP features exist, but Made for Kids status makes several of them unavailable or unsuitable as a revenue plan. Eligibility is not a promise that a feature will be enabled, that ads will appear on a particular upload, or that it will earn a particular amount.

YPP eligibility: the current thresholds and what they do not mean
YouTube’s current earning guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following channel thresholds. They are a time-sensitive snapshot, not a guarantee of acceptance or revenue; country or region, account and payment requirements, policy review, and feature-specific terms also matter.

Accept the right monetization terms
YPP revenue is governed by the relevant terms: YouTube describes Watch Page ads and Premium earnings under the Watch Page module, Shorts Feed ad revenue under the Shorts module, and fan-funding features under the Commerce Product Module. Review and accept the terms offered in YouTube Studio for each feature you are eligible to use. Turning on ads does not ensure an ad will serve; a video remains subject to review and advertiser suitability. YouTube details the modules in Choose how you want to monetize.
How to build a monetizable kids or family gaming channel
1. Make the audience decision before optimizing revenue
Decide whether each upload is child-directed based on its subject, presentation, and intended audience. Do not change a Made for Kids label to general-audience content just to regain comments, personalized advertising, memberships, or other features. The setting should describe the content accurately.

2. Build original, useful videos rather than promotional filler
YouTube applies its channel monetization policies across Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams. It also applies kids and family quality principles. A channel strongly focused on low-quality kids content may be suspended from YPP, while individual videos may receive limited or no ad earnings. YouTube identifies heavily promotional content and excessive-buying themes as quality concerns; turning a channel into a sequence of product pitches or unboxing videos is not a sound workaround. 3. Apply, then check each route separately
Use YouTube Studio’s Earn tab to see whether the channel can apply, what requirements remain, and which features are available. If accepted, read the module terms and evaluate eligible uploads under the applicable review and advertiser-suitability rules. Treat YouTube Premium as another possible platform revenue stream, not as a fixed payment for every view.
4. Treat sponsorships as a separate, carefully reviewed business decision
A sponsorship, licensing arrangement, or other direct partnership is negotiated outside the YPP feature system. There is no single YouTube threshold that guarantees a brand deal, and a sponsor’s product or claims may not be appropriate for a child audience. Assess whether a placement suits the viewers, make truthful claims, and disclose material connections clearly. The FTC identifies child-directed advertising as an area of special concern and cautions that platform disclosure tools may not always be sufficient; see its advertising guides announcement. Legal and disclosure duties vary with the facts and jurisdiction.

There is no representative typical earnings figure for an unspecified kids channel. Revenue depends on factors including eligible viewing, format, viewer geography, advertiser suitability, and which monetization terms apply. Made for Kids content does not receive personalized ads, so it should not be assumed to earn like content that is eligible for them. Meeting a subscriber or view threshold does not establish a particular RPM, monthly income, or even that an ad will run on a given video.
