To earn advertising revenue from a YouTube live stream, your channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, and have monetization turned on for the stream in YouTube Studio. You can use automatic, scheduled, or manually inserted mid-roll ads; enabling a slot does not guarantee an ad will serve.
Check eligibility before setting up live ads
Watch Page advertising revenue on live streams requires YPP acceptance and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube’s listed ad-revenue threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or the applicable Shorts threshold. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance: the channel is still subject to YPP review and applicable policies. Check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements for your location, since thresholds and feature availability can change.
YPP features are subject to channel, policy, and geographic conditions. YouTube’s reviewed earnings information notes a Russia-specific pause in ads and some monetization features; check current availability for your country rather than assuming every feature is available everywhere. YouTube also says updated YPP terms begin February 1, 2027, with acceptance due by January 31, 2027. If you expect your channel to remain monetized near that date, review the current terms in Studio.
Turn on monetization for a live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab for an immediate broadcast, or use Manage to schedule one.
- Open the stream’s Edit → Monetization settings and set monetization to On.
- Choose how to handle mid-roll ads: automatic, scheduled, or manual. If you select manual, you must insert breaks while live; without an inserted break, no mid-roll will be served.
- After the broadcast, review the stream and its replay in YouTube Analytics with the Live filter to inspect revenue information.
Turning monetization on also enables pre-roll and display ads automatically. YouTube’s channel-level defaults for monetized channels without rights management are On with automatic mid-rolls at medium frequency; you can change those defaults for future streams. Channels with rights management do not currently have these channel-level settings.

Choose how mid-roll ads are placed

YouTube reported that creators who turned on live automatic mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not turned on the feature. That platform-reported comparison covered 207 countries in January 2024; it is not an earnings forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Manage interruptions during an important moment
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to delay automatic ads for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before ads resume. This control does not delay mid-rolls you insert manually, so it is not a way to suppress a manual break already placed.

Ad slots are opportunities, not promises. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether a slot serves an ad based on multiple factors. A viewer who does not receive an ad continues watching; after an ad ends or is skipped, the viewer rejoins the live stream. Viewers can therefore encounter ads at different moments even when they are watching the same broadcast.
Check stream format and content restrictions
Horizontal and vertical live formats
YouTube’s format comparison says horizontal live streams support pre-roll and mid-roll ads, while vertical live feed does not. Vertical live feed can be discovered in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description. Both formats support memberships and gifted memberships. Choose based on the production and discovery experience you want, but do not assume vertical live feed has the same live-ad options as horizontal streaming.

Rights, suitability, and embeds
- Copyright or other rights issues can affect whether a stream is eligible to earn. Use material you have the rights to broadcast and review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
- Content that is not suitable for all audiences may be age-restricted and ineligible for monetization; advertiser-unfriendly material may receive limited or no ads.
- Ads are turned off for a live stream when its YouTube player is embedded on an external site with auto start.
- Side-by-side mid-rolls appear automatically only on eligible streams. Streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.
Understand what live ads can—and cannot—earn
YouTube says partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue under the terms described on its partner earnings page. This is a revenue share, not a fixed amount per view or a promised RPM. Actual ad delivery and earnings depend on factors including whether ads serve and whether viewers see them.
Ads are only one possible revenue source. Eligible creators may also use Super Chat and Super Stickers, which let viewers pay to highlight live chat messages or animated images, and channel memberships, which offer recurring payments for channel perks. These fan-funding features have separate availability and eligibility rules and require the Commerce Product Module or an applicable prior agreement. YouTube Premium revenue is another YPP revenue stream; YouTube’s partner earnings page describes a 70% share of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks when the creator enables fan funding through the Commerce Product Module. These are distinct from live ad revenue.

Optional: trigger ad breaks from a Stream Deck
YouTube documents a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck that can be used to insert ads. It is an optional physical control for producers who want to trigger breaks from a key; it is not required to enable monetization or configure ad options in Studio.
