It depends on whose stream you mean. To check someone else’s lecture, open its YouTube watch page and watch or listen to the broadcast; if it is scheduled, tap Notify me to get a notification when it starts. To check a stream you own or manage, use YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream status and the YouTube Studio app for stream analytics. YouTube does not document Notify me as an alert when an existing stream stops, nor does its guidance guarantee that phone playback will continue uninterrupted with the screen locked.
Watching someone else’s lecture stream
- Open the stream. Visit the lecture’s YouTube watch page in the YouTube app or a mobile browser. If it is already live, play it and check that you can see the picture and hear the sound.
- For a scheduled stream, set a start reminder. On the stream page, tap Notify me. YouTube documents this for a live stream or Premiere going live. It is a start notification, not a documented warning that the stream has ended, frozen, or lost audio.
- Check the broadcast itself when it matters. Return to the video periodically and confirm picture and sound are present. The documented viewer tools do not provide a creator-style encoder-health dashboard for someone else’s stream.
Watching the video is not the same as monitoring its broadcast health. The available official guidance describes go-live notifications and creator-side metrics, but not a viewer-facing failure-alert service. It also does not promise that a phone will keep playing a stream indefinitely when locked or unattended.
Checking a stream you own or manage
Check status in Live Control Room
- Open your channel’s live-stream dashboard or Live Control Room.
- Find Stream status. YouTube describes this as the health of the stream being sent from a mobile device; it can include error messages and instructions.
- Review the status while the stream is active. If YouTube reports an error, follow the displayed instructions and check the broadcast’s picture and sound as well.
Review live activity and analytics
The mobile live workflow can show concurrent viewers and duration, along with selected chat or like activity. Which metrics are available depends on whether the stream is sent from a phone or an encoder, so do not assume every method exposes the same set.
- In the YouTube Studio app, open Content.
- Select the Live tab and choose the stream.
- Open its Analytics card.
YouTube documents the concurrent-viewer report at video level on iPhone and iPad. After a stream ends, post-stream metrics may become available within minutes. These analytics help you review performance; they are not a substitute for checking that audio and video are currently working.

If you mean broadcasting from your phone
Starting a mobile broadcast is a separate task from monitoring one. YouTube lists eligibility requirements for mobile live streaming, and availability can change; check the current requirements and options in your account before relying on a phone as the source. YouTube’s mobile workflow starts the broadcast in the YouTube app. After you finish, the creator sees a recap and an archive is created.
For any live setup, YouTube Help advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality” and recommends trying a test stream. A phone can help you check a broadcast, but the guidance does not promise uninterrupted overnight playback or a phone alert if someone else’s stream fails.
