What to monitor—and what each check proves

Use these as complementary checks, not substitutes. YouTube documents stream health and status for its side of the connection; VPS monitoring covers the local sender; a spot check of public playback addresses the viewer experience.

Live Control Room
While streaming, YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room shows stream health and real-time metrics. On desktop, YouTube says stream status can include specific error messages and instructions. Use it to see what YouTube reports about the incoming stream. YouTube Help: live streaming
Automated checks with the Live Streaming API
If you need a machine-readable check, Google’s Live Streaming API documents a liveStream resource with status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Documented stream-status values include active, created, error, inactive, and ready. Health-status values include good, ok, bad, and noData; issue records can include a type, severity, reason, and description. Google YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams

Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide says active indicates YouTube servers are receiving data from the encoder correctly. A stream that is merely configured or ready is not necessarily active. Treat noData as “YouTube has no health information at this moment,” not as proof the VPS is down; inspect the detailed status and compare its timing with local logs. Monitor the encoder and VPS separately
Track signals that can fail independently. These are operational recommendations for an FFmpeg or similar encoder deployment, not a claim that any particular VPS has been tested.

- Encoder process: record whether it is running, its exit code, and restart history. A process can exist without making useful progress.
- Encoder progress: check that progress advances over time, using an appropriate progress signal or log timestamps. A running process with frozen progress needs investigation.
- Host resources: watch CPU, memory, and disk space, including sustained pressure relevant to your encoder and setup.
- Outbound connectivity: check for network errors and whether the encoder is still sending data.
- YouTube status: correlate YouTube ingest and health information with local events rather than assuming the VPS’s status tells the whole story.
For a small deployment, start with tools already on the VPS: a service manager or process watchdog for restarts, a progress or log signal for a stuck encoder, and a monitor that can notify you when a check fails. Google exposes ingest and health as separate fields in its API, while a community Grafana dashboard example combines YouTube stream status with other monitoring signals rather than relying on one check. If you already use Prometheus and Grafana, that dashboard listing may be a starting point. It calls for a YouTube exporter and API key; check that the exporter, its permissions, and the dashboard are maintained and compatible before relying on them. It is a community contribution, not an official YouTube product or a guarantee.

Send alerts to your phone with Uptime Kuma and ntfy
One documented route is to use Uptime Kuma to monitor the checks you care about and ntfy to deliver notifications. ntfy documents Android and iOS apps, along with an Uptime Kuma integration that uses a topic, server URL, and priority. ntfy: phone apps ntfy: integrations
- Create separate monitors. Cover the failure signals relevant to your setup: encoder process or progress, host or connectivity, and YouTube-side status if you have an API-based check.
- Set up ntfy delivery in Uptime Kuma. Configure the ntfy topic, server URL, and priority in the notification settings, following the current integration instructions.
- Test delivery. Send a test notification and confirm it reaches the phone over the network you normally use.
- Attach notifications to monitors. Apply the notification to each relevant monitor, then deliberately verify that a monitor state change triggers an alert.
- Include useful context. Make the message identify which check failed and when, and point you to the relevant logs or dashboard.
On Android, ntfy documents that default priority or higher can make a notification sound or vibrate, while high or urgent priority can appear as a pop-over. The result depends on app and device notification settings, so allow notifications on the phone and verify its behavior directly. The documentation does not promise identical presentation on every device.

An alert reports a configured check’s state change; it does not repair the stream. Keep your monitoring dashboard reachable from the phone so you can diagnose the failure, and test the notification route rather than assuming that a saved configuration guarantees delivery.

Check public playback when viewers’ experience matters
Open the public watch page and confirm playback from a phone or another viewer-like device when you need an end-to-end spot check. YouTube’s ingest status tells you whether it is receiving data and reports certain health conditions; it does not claim to test what every viewer hears or sees. A playback check is a point-in-time observation, not a substitute for the ongoing ingest and VPS checks.

Troubleshoot missing or misleading alerts
- YouTube says ready, but the stream is not live: Ready and active are different states. Check the detailed API or Live Control Room status, then correlate it with encoder progress and logs.
- API reports
noData: That means YouTube has no health information at that moment, not necessarily that the server is down. Compare timestamps and inspect both the API details and VPS logs. - The encoder process is running, but the stream appears stuck: Check progress over time, outbound errors, and resource pressure; process existence by itself is not proof of useful output.
- The VPS monitor is green, but YouTube reports a problem: A local host check does not establish healthy ingest. Use YouTube’s detailed status and health information and inspect the encoder’s connection and logs.
- YouTube reports active, but a viewer cannot watch: Check the public watch page and playback separately; ingest status is not a complete viewer test.
- No phone notification arrives: Send a test, confirm the topic, server URL, and priority, check phone notification permissions and settings, and trigger a monitor state change deliberately. Uptime Kuma’s documented ntfy setup includes a test before applying it.
