Use three separate checks: OBS’s audio mixer to see signal and peaks, a test recording and headphone listening to judge what viewers will hear, and YouTube’s stream-health information to catch ingest problems. If you need an alert while nobody is listening, an OBS community silence-detection plugin can help—but test its threshold and alert delivery before relying on it. None of these checks alone proves that an unattended stream will always sound right.
What each monitoring method tells you

OBS’s mixer displays per-source signal levels and peak information. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide describes its moving colored bars as peak levels and explains that the peak indicator holds the loudest level for 20 seconds. Its VU-style indicator is closer to sound pressure or loudness than a peak meter, but a meter still cannot replace listening.
OBS’s meter colors are a visual guide: green is typical for background music and effects, yellow indicates stronger levels, and red is near clipping. These colors do not define a universal target for relaxation music or ambience. See the OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details for how the meter works.
Prepare and test the complete audio path
- Play representative content. Use the kind of relaxation audio intended for the stream, including quiet sections and transitions. Confirm that the expected source appears and moves in OBS’s audio mixer.
- Listen at the source and in OBS. Where possible, check the source device directly, then use OBS Audio Monitoring to listen to the signal as OBS receives it. Confirm both channels when the content is stereo.
- Record a representative test. Make a recording using the intended stream setup and listen back, including the quietest passage and any transitions. Check for silence, distortion, unexpected level changes, channel imbalance, and unwanted noise.
- Pretest with similar audio before the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event. Its encoder settings guidance also advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event.
Closed-back headphones can make a human listening check easier by reducing room sound, but they are optional: they do not monitor continuously or send alerts. OBS also lists a third-party Audio Monitor plugin for routing sources to an audio device and separating monitoring by source or device. That is a listening aid, not silence detection by itself.

Set levels with headroom; treat 0 dBFS as the ceiling
OBS explains that 0 dBFS is the maximum digital level and that audio exceeding full scale in the delivered stream can clip. Watch the mixer’s peak indicator during the loudest parts and listen to the recording; a meter reading alone does not tell you whether the mix is comfortable or free of audible problems.
The OBS technical documentation describes -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum in the context of its meter design and safety margins. These are technical references for that meter, not universal loudness targets for every relaxation stream. The cited sources do not establish one ideal level for all music, ambience, encoders, or listeners.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, and lists 128 kbps for stereo in its recommended advanced settings. These are encoder configuration recommendations, not loudness targets. Check YouTube’s current guidance when configuring a stream.
Add a silence alert if someone needs to be notified
The third-party OBS community resource Audio Capture Alert describes real-time audio-input monitoring, a configurable delay before an alert source triggers, and uses such as detecting a disconnected microphone or an audio capture device that stops playing. Before installing it, check that it supports your OBS version and operating system.

- Configure the input and the low/no-signal condition you want to detect, including the delay before an alert.
- Test an actual silence or capture failure, and confirm the alert reaches a device or person who can act on it.
- Play normal low-level ambience and quiet passages to check that the alert does not trigger unnecessarily.
- Confirm the monitoring process and notification route remain available for the runtime you expect.
Quiet audio may be intentional in a relaxation stream, so a threshold that is too sensitive can create nuisance alerts. The plugin listing does not establish a universal threshold or guarantee that an alert will reach an off-site operator. Treat it as an optional detection layer, not a promise of unattended reliability.
Check YouTube stream health separately
YouTube’s Live Control Room reports stream health and messages during a live event. For programmatic checks, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes streamStatus, healthStatus, and configuration issue objects in its LiveStreams resource. The configuration issue documentation includes noAudioStream for an ingest with no audio stream, as well as audio codec, bitrate, sample-rate, and channel configuration issues.

These checks describe what YouTube receives and whether reported configuration issues exist. A healthy ingest does not certify that the mix is pleasing, loud enough, balanced, free of subtle noise, or audible on every playback device.

- OBS meters do not move: Check whether the intended source is selected and active, then verify the source/device signal and OBS capture path. Make a recording and listen to it before relying on the live output.
- The meter moves, but the recording is silent or wrong: A moving meter shows signal at that point in OBS, not necessarily the final result. Listen to the recording and check the capture, routing, and output configuration.
- The peak indicator reaches red or the audio sounds distorted: Reduce the source or output level, then record and listen again. The digital ceiling is 0 dBFS; do not assume a green-looking average rules out problematic peaks.
- A silence alert triggers during a quiet passage: Adjust the threshold or delay against representative content, then test both quiet ambience and a genuine failure. No single threshold is established for all relaxation audio.
- An alert condition occurs but nobody receives the notification: Test the complete route from detection to the person who must respond. The existence of an alert source does not prove off-site delivery.
- YouTube reports an audio configuration issue or no audio stream: Review the Live Control Room message or API issue, then check the encoder’s audio stream and settings. Re-run a test with representative audio before leaving the stream unattended.
- YouTube reports healthy ingest but listeners report bad sound: Use a test recording and listen through the OBS monitoring path. Ingest health cannot judge subjective loudness, mix quality, or subtle audible defects.
