Monitor a continuous YouTube broadcast at three separate points: the upstream encoder or AWS Elemental MediaLive, AWS Elemental MediaPackage in Amazon CloudWatch, and the audience-facing stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Each layer answers a different question: is video being produced, is it being packaged and delivered, and is YouTube receiving a healthy stream? Use alarms, events and logs to support those checks, then route alerts to a response process that is staffed for your service objectives.
What each monitoring layer tells you

A healthy signal at one layer does not prove the others are healthy. In particular, MediaPackage metrics describe the AWS workflow, not the final viewer experience on YouTube. Check the destination separately in YouTube Live Control Room metrics.
Check the upstream encoder first
If the encoder is AWS Elemental MediaLive
Open the MediaLive channel and review its state, Health tab, pipeline details, active alerts and destination information. Channel configuration determines whether one or two pipelines are present; do not assume both. Note any alert clear times as well as current alerts. If MediaPackage input activity falls or input-quality signals change, this is a useful first stop for checking whether the upstream source or pipeline is responsible. See AWS MediaLive monitoring.
If another encoder feeds MediaPackage
Inspect that encoder’s output and delivery path instead. MediaLive-specific channel and pipeline checks do not apply to a workflow that does not use MediaLive. For a YouTube broadcast, YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video during the event, and testing backup-encoder failover where applicable. Monitor MediaPackage in CloudWatch
Scope metrics to the workflow
- Open Amazon CloudWatch Metrics and select the
AWS/MediaPackagenamespace. - Choose dimensions for the channel and endpoint you are investigating. AWS documents dimensions such as channel, ingest endpoint, origin endpoint, request type, status code and track type. The available metric names and dimensions vary by MediaPackage version, so verify them against the deployed version before building dashboards or alarms. See MediaPackage CloudWatch metrics.
- Review the same time interval across related metrics. Check whether input is active; whether output requests and bytes continue; whether response times change; whether 4xx or 5xx responses rise; and whether supported input or output quality scores change.
- Compare the individual channel or endpoint with its own normal behavior. Account-wide aggregates can hide a problem affecting only one stream or endpoint.
AWS says MediaPackage publishes live metrics every minute or sooner. That cadence is useful for operational monitoring, but it is not a frame-by-frame or instantaneous guarantee. AWS also states that the referenced CloudWatch statistics are retained for 15 months; this is a CloudWatch retention statement, not a claim about YouTube analytics retention. Both figures are from current AWS documentation, which does not state a publication year. See AWS MediaPackage metrics.
Build alarms around your stream’s objectives
Create CloudWatch alarms for metrics that indicate failure or degradation in this specific workflow, and route notifications to an attended incident process. CloudWatch alarms use thresholds and can notify or trigger actions. AWS does not prescribe universal thresholds for every 24/7 broadcast: set thresholds and evaluation periods from the stream’s service objectives and observed normal behavior. Verify the metric and dimensions in your deployed MediaPackage version before relying on an alarm.

Check the YouTube destination independently
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health and any status messages alongside real-time stream analytics. Depending on stream type and interface, analytics can include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views and average view duration. Those measures describe activity at YouTube; they are not substitutes for AWS input, origin or delivery metrics. See YouTube live stream metrics.
YouTube displays stream errors beside the Health Indicator with timestamps. Its guidance characterizes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Match those timestamps with CloudWatch and encoder alerts to identify where the fault began. See YouTube live streaming errors.

Use events, logs and headers as supporting evidence
- MediaPackage events: Route relevant events to an appropriate AWS target, such as Amazon SNS or AWS Lambda, for additional event-driven context. AWS says MediaPackage emits events on a best-effort basis, so use them alongside metric-based alarms rather than as the only way to detect an outage. See MediaPackage events.
- Access logs: Use them to inspect requests when delivery behavior needs investigation.
- Manifest update response headers: Where the feature applies to the workflow, use them to investigate whether a manifest is stale.

Triage a suspected interruption
- YouTube reports unhealthy input: Check the encoder first. For a MediaLive workflow, inspect channel and pipeline health and alerts; then check whether MediaPackage input activity and quality metrics agree.
- Input looks healthy, but output requests fail or slow: Focus on the relevant MediaPackage endpoint and request dimensions, status codes, response times and access logs.
- MediaPackage output appears normal, but YouTube reports errors or viewers cannot access the event: Investigate the handoff and YouTube status messages. Verify access through the channel page, watch page and a mobile device.
- Dashboards disagree: Preserve timestamps and compare the same interval, endpoint and stream. Metric publication cadence and platform health checks do not necessarily line up exactly.
- An alert has no clear owner: Route it through an escalation runbook with an attended response path. Response-time objectives, thresholds and staffing depend on the broadcast’s service targets and operating model.
